Movie Trailer: Rob Marshall’s Nine

nine

The Weinstein Co have released the first movie trailer for Nine. Rob Marshall, who directed Chicago - winner of six Academy Awards including Best Picture, returns to the big screen with another classic Broadway production. The musical tells the story of world famous film director Guido Contini (Daniel Day-Lewis) as he prepares his latest picture and balances the numerous women in his life including his wife (Marion Cotillard), a producer, a mistress (Penelope Cruz), a film star muse (Nicole Kidman), an American fashion journalist (Kate Hudson), the whore from his youth (Fergie), his confidant and costume designer (Judi Dench), and his deceased mother (Sophia Loren).

The trailer shows off some of the bright vs. dark cinematography of Dion Beebe, the all-star ensemble cast and incredible choreographed musical sequences. I love the backlit silhouette imagery in the opening. Watch the trailer after the jump, and leave your thoughts in the comments below.

The original 1982 Broadway production was nominated for twelve Tony Awards and winning five, including Best Musical. In 2003, the Broadway revival of “NINE,” starring Antonio Banderas, received eight Tony Award nominations and won two, including Best Revival of a Musical. Inspired by Fellini’s personal, painful, and beautiful film ‘8 1/2, Nine has been described by Marshall as “a sumptuous and emotional work that translates naturally to the film musical genre because of its seamless relationship between fantasy and reality.”

Watch the trailer in High Defintion on Apple. Nine hits theaters on November 25th 2009.

  • i'm on board just to see daniel day-lewis hit it out of the park.
  • That's a pretty insane cast... except for Fergie but she's playing a whore so it shouldn't be too much of a stretch
  • I have no idea what I just saw, but I'm intrigued.

More importantly, who would ever cheat on Marion Cotillard? With Cruz? Let's be real.
  • Well that is a REAL possibility actually!
  • I can't say I would or not, but it'd be nice to be in a position where I would have to make such a decision...
  • Jeffrey Thomas III
    I would I would!
  • Who wouldn't want to have both is pretty much the question. And why not, men are greedy, and we want our cake and eat it too!
  • Bahn
What is the point of having cake you can't eat though, really?
  • besogrande
Sometimes you need a little frosting to go with your cake!
  • Mimi
    Tiger Woods?
  • I really wanna see this. Daniel Day Lewis singing? Come on! This will be awesome.
  • jjjj
sigh , do u know tht daniel day lewis isnt going to be actually singing its just sound , maybe fromm another voice.
  • jackal
the leg movement of cruz :p
  • Totally right! :D
  • Fergie as La Saraghina?
    Nicole Kidman as Claudia Cardinale?

Sounds like an utter travesty to me.
  • Brendan M.
How many movies is this, this year, that have nine (if only) in the title?

    -District 9
    -9
    -Nine

    I'm sure I'm missing one...or nine :-o
  • Marko
Just as many movies coming out this year with "I Love You, " in the title.
  • There's also The Nines, but that was two years ago.
  • whats the worst that can happen?
  • Nick
Oh god that looks horrible. Rob Marshall taking on Fellini? Ugh.
  • EEKstl
Actually, it's Rob Marshall taking on Broadway taking on Fellini and it works for me.
  • Brando
I think that Fergie appears many times and I don´t know why. Marion Cottilard, Dench and Cruz seem the most perfect. The music, cinematography and costumes are just amazing. I see many Oscar for this...
  • Rob Marshall is a cherry picker! He needs to be stopped! He robs people who are actually talented and who actually worked their whole lives to bring us new material of Awards.
You can't just sit back and grab up the rights to plays that have won lots of awards and then make them into a movie! Well, maybe you can do it once in your career, but twice? No. That should be illegal. It's cherry picking. It's the opposite of taking a risk. He takes plays with solid stories and just keeps them the same. It would be hard NOT to win awards with the material that he is cherry picking.
I'd LOVE to see this guy take on some original material. I mean, we saw how good he is at adapting material that doesn't have the structure of a play or a movie. Memoirs of a Geisha was a mess! That's because he has no idea how to make a movie, he only knows how to rip off plays. If we're going to allow him to do this, there should at least be a little star next to his name on any award he gets that lets the world know that he had NOTHING to do with the creative aspect of the movie. He just sat down, pointed at the play and said "Go." That's not directing and that's certainly not talent, it's just a step above a really long 'copy and paste' project.
That part in the beginning of this trailer, where the lady says "all a director does is say 'yes' and no'" is exactly what Rob Marshall does, but it is NOT directing. It's not what real directors, what real filmmakers do. It's what hacks do who think that directing means ripping off a play beat for beat that has already won many awards and then parading around and accepting awards as if he had anything to do with it at all aside from saying "Yes" and "No".

    phew pretty long comment ;)
  • regina
i love so much musical and i love trailer.i can't wait this movie
  • There are some gorgeous shots in that trailer. Is it wrong that I'm curious to see what Marshall could do with a non-musical script? He's clearly got some good sensibilities and is one of the only directors working today translating part of what makes theater so great to the big screen... why not have him tackle something that relies on just his and his actor's abilities instead of using knock out songs as a safety net.
  • C'on
He directed Memoirs of a Giesha.
  • Butterfly
You know that "Nine" _is_ a musical script, though? I can't wait for this one. I say Rob should stick with musical scripts - he seems to nail 'em. Memoirs was a travesty. Maybe he's the one who will realize my ultimate dream of remaking "West Side Story", this time without the pancake "Hispanic" makeup!
  • MonkeyMafia
Maybe an adaptation of the newest revival? Hey, it could happen.... McWOOOORRLD!!!!!!
  • Because he sucks at anything that doesn't involve robbing award winning plays beat for beat. When he actually has the ability to make creative choices and take creative liberties with the material, he ends up with a chinese cast speaking english in what is supposed to be Japan AKA Memoirs of a Geisha. This guy is the ultimate hack, made worse by the fact that he has won awards for his thievery.
  • E N
He did with MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA. Visually it is just stunning, even though only 10% was actually shot in Japan and most of the females in the cast were Chinese not Japanese, perhaps politically incorrect, but it worked for the most part.

  • C'on
    I'll be seeing this.
  • SOS
Any film starring Daniel Day Lewis is a pretty safe bet
  • Fred
More like a pretty boring bet.

    Needs more explosions and one-liners.
  • Oh that totally slipped my mind! My bad. Good call, C'on.
  • vva
Other than Daniel Day Lewis, I think I'll stick with the masterpiece that is 8 1/2.
  • There are 3 reasons why I'll see this movie:

    Daniel
    Day
    Lewis
  • WOW!
  • freemachine
At first, hearing Dench's voice, I thought it was a new Bond film. Then the B/W footage made me think that they resurrected Federico Fellini. Ultimately I came to my senses and recognized that as much as I hate musicals, this looks pretty excellent. I'll probably just Netfix this unless I hear that Daniel Day-Lewis kills someone by the end of the film. Ok, "I'm finished"!
  • yeah i like daniel day lewis most when he's either angry or killing something, but both preferably. "this is a kill!"
  • lol
    this looks own
  • pete
daniel day-lewis, yes please. other than that, no thanks.
  • Branden
I love the trailer, but if Marshall is trying to make another "Chicago" with the stage motif, the lights, the gams for days. Come on!
  • Tony
unlike in Chicago, I think it could work here. they make the stage and backstage machinery so obvious because Daniel Day Lewis is a film director and hes working on one. whereas in Chicago there really was no point making it look so obviously stage-y.
  • Branden
That is true, but I think people are going to think that its another "Chicago" and don't watch it. That's what I was implying. I will see it.
  • I'm by no means a big musical fan, but this actually looks pretty good. I wouldn't be interested without D-Day though.
  • Alright! Glad to see that Kate Hudson might have a chance at recapturing the potential she squandered away after Almost Famous with all those idiotic romantic comedies. And Rob Marshall back to doing what he does best. Plus, I would probably watch Daniel Day-Lewis watching paint dry, he's so friggin good. Looks great!
  • This is a great musical with some fantastic pieces in its score. I'm looking forward to it, especially with half of this cast being composed of brilliance. And though it's clear she isn't classically trained, Fergie shows some potential throughout the song featured in this trailer. Definitely not hearing the talent from previous vocalists on the stage, but eh, can't be too picky when it comes to film, I suppose.
  • As long as Daniel Day Lewis keeps acting, I will find inspiration in life. :)
  • Anything with DDL in it gets me in the movie theater.
