Movie Trailer: Rob Marshall’s Nine

nine

The Weinstein Co have released the first movie trailer for Nine. Rob Marshall, who directed Chicago - winner of six Academy Awards including Best Picture, returns to the big screen with another classic Broadway production. The musical tells the story of world famous film director Guido Contini (Daniel Day-Lewis) as he prepares his latest picture and balances the numerous women in his life including his wife (Marion Cotillard), a producer, a mistress (Penelope Cruz), a film star muse (Nicole Kidman), an American fashion journalist (Kate Hudson), the whore from his youth (Fergie), his confidant and costume designer (Judi Dench), and his deceased mother (Sophia Loren).

The trailer shows off some of the bright vs. dark cinematography of Dion Beebe, the all-star ensemble cast and incredible choreographed musical sequences. I love the backlit silhouette imagery in the opening. Watch the trailer after the jump, and leave your thoughts in the comments below.

The original 1982 Broadway production was nominated for twelve Tony Awards and winning five, including Best Musical. In 2003, the Broadway revival of “NINE,” starring Antonio Banderas, received eight Tony Award nominations and won two, including Best Revival of a Musical. Inspired by Fellini’s personal, painful, and beautiful film ‘8 1/2, Nine has been described by Marshall as “a sumptuous and emotional work that translates naturally to the film musical genre because of its seamless relationship between fantasy and reality.”

Watch the trailer in High Defintion on Apple. Nine hits theaters on November 25th 2009.

  • This movie gained a good amount of profit when it was released and attracted more audiences that I have imagined. I do believe that it's very deserving for the merit.

Saw it. Loved it. Will watch it again.

Visions of spectacular opulence. The fantasy of adolescents. Not the kind of tragic consequence due to unarrested indulgence I would hope to see. Explosions of glitter and self indulgent pish. Film industry - shush your noise while we're baking in this economic heat. Better class of flick shimmying from Europe and South America.

Talented Day Lewis -wasting his time and talent turning out more
    stale, routine pap.

    Hey Daniel! -Dig this!--

You're industry -Hollywood- is working overtime covering-up, downsizing
and blindsiding the soldout West on the most awesome genocida in all
human history just across the Pacific in you-know-where.

70 million murders -in 'peacetime' -all in the name of 'social progress'
-and all completely unoutted and unanswered for. Not only that
but the very heirs of the perpetrators are now America's ---and your
creditors. -How does it feel being a junk-credit opium addict?

---Seems there might be a movie in all that!

    AMEN

I cannot wait to see this!

Looks VERY intriguing. I will definitely rent this one. Fergie kinda looked like the witches from Hocus Pocus. Kate Hudson and Nicole Kidman look great! Can't wait to see it.

BRAVO!!! Rob Marshall you did it again. Can't wait to see this new film!

I LOVE they took out the insipid line "be Italian, you rapscallion" (sp?) in the movie version of this song. On the revival original cast recording, that one stupid word made me hate that entire song. The version in this trailer is soooo much better.
  • I could not care less about DDL so long as he can act. It's the songs I want -(My Husband Makes Movies) in particular. The trailer looks brilliantI.Movies) The cutting appears excellent with the music beats matching the movements and the dancing. The only other Director who I have ever seen who can do this is Ken Russell. Not only in his films but also in his TV documentaries They have taken years off Dench and Loren does not look too bad either. I am a stage musical nut and this film looks about as good as it is going to be for a theatre musical..
    Who is Fergie?
  • Joe Bob
So, wait a minute. This is a movie adaptation of a musical adaptation of a movie? That's even worse than Gus Van Sant remaking Psycho. To think of all the good, ripe unproduced scripts in the world gathering dust while the Corporate Hollywood Ouroboros devours itself... Thanks, Rob Marshall for reminding us all that Fellini is really good. Got it.

Bridgette, I have often wondered why people don't like Fergie. You know, it always comes down to that - personal likes and dislikes tend to out weigh impartiality. Fergie is talented, has tremenduous drive and stamina, and always gives it her utmost. I saw the trailer posted by Apple, and her voice is incredible in it. It is the quality and depth of emotion she ws able to vocalize. I will see the movie because SHE is in it. That is not ot say that I don't adore Sophia Loren or Judi Dench or DDL and all the others.
  • The fact that Daniel Day-Lewis alone is in this, is reason enough for me to watch haha.
  • Bridgette
Looks like a must see! Beautiful teaser, cannot wait for November! Why are people doubting Fergie? She can out sing anyone and it is a musical. Fergie is a perfect cast and extremely sexy. Everything she touches turns to gold - have faith.
  • 'Are you thinking what I'm thinking Pinky?'
'I think so Brain, but why would Sophia Loren do a musical?'
  • Daniel Day Lewis only does a movie a year if were lucky, usually less so if he picked this movie I trust him lol He isnt doing any paycheck films anytime soon so this should be enjoyable...a movie can b a 7/10 just becuz daniel day lewis lol its up to the rest of the cast/director to give it more points.
  • Fir3Wolf
Looks interesting and since Daniel Day-Lewis is in it, I'll be watching it. I am picky about movies that are based on musicals even though I do like a couple of them. I'll check this out and looking forward to seeing a bit more about it later on.
  • Daniel Day Lewis is giving off a TImothy Roth vibe in the trailer. I love the cast, loved the opening exchange with Judi Dench and DDL, and then it was up and down for me. I think this offers us yet another incredible performance from one of my all-time favourite actors and I doubt anyone will be let down.

Two reasons why I'm going to see this:
    Maury
    Yeston

Hands down the best modern composer in musical theatre, next to Sondheim.
  • Butterfly
A few years ago I heard on a Broadway-based talk show with the composer of 'Nine' (Maury Yeston) that the Guido/Fellini role was originally given to Javier Bardem. Never heard the story of why DDL has the role now, but he will obviously be amazing. Javier will have to find another musical to kick ass in!
  • Tony
Bardem said he needed to take a break after no country and vicki cristina so he bailed on the project.

    WWDD-LD?
  • This looks breathtaking. Can't wait to see it. Great cast, great cinematography, awesome director. Since I loved 8 1/2, and this is purportedly inspired by Fellini's film, I'm definitely going to love this!
  • Wow, this trailer is pretty insane. I love musicials and this has a great cast (better than Chicago), yeah, I'll put this on my Nov movies to see list.
  • For some reasn I think this looks really, really good...Maybe its because it has Daniel Day Lewis...or maybe it is Penelope Cruz in skimpy clothing ...we may never know...I never saw "Chicago" so I dont know much about Rob Marshall's directing, however the look of the film is great. Im not a huge fan of musicals, although I say that, but I usually like most that I watch. I like the cast, I mean I wouldnt doubt it if Daniel Day Lewis gets another Oscar nomination, I like Penelope Cruz, Nicole Kidman is a good actress (although I never realized why she got so much praise), my biggest worry is Fergie. I try to give most people a chance when it comes to acting so Im not going to say she wont be good, but I mean come out...a very high possibility that this movie is be great and yet she will end up the films only down point...Im not sure about the casting with her.
  • Is this "All That Jazz 2"?
  • no
  • Jason
The start of this totally reminds me of the film 8 1/2
  • Butterfly
Indeed - the musical "Nine" is a fictionalized story of the life of Fellini while he is making the movie 8 1/2. Having a movie director make this musical gives us so many opportunities for great visual references like that one!
  • Anything with DDL in it gets me in the movie theater.
  • As long as Daniel Day Lewis keeps acting, I will find inspiration in life. :)
  • This is a great musical with some fantastic pieces in its score. I'm looking forward to it, especially with half of this cast being composed of brilliance. And though it's clear she isn't classically trained, Fergie shows some potential throughout the song featured in this trailer. Definitely not hearing the talent from previous vocalists on the stage, but eh, can't be too picky when it comes to film, I suppose.
  • Alright! Glad to see that Kate Hudson might have a chance at recapturing the potential she squandered away after Almost Famous with all those idiotic romantic comedies. And Rob Marshall back to doing what he does best. Plus, I would probably watch Daniel Day-Lewis watching paint dry, he's so friggin good. Looks great!
  • I'm by no means a big musical fan, but this actually looks pretty good. I wouldn't be interested without D-Day though.
  • Branden
I love the trailer, but if Marshall is trying to make another "Chicago" with the stage motif, the lights, the gams for days. Come on!
  • Tony
unlike in Chicago, I think it could work here. they make the stage and backstage machinery so obvious because Daniel Day Lewis is a film director and hes working on one. whereas in Chicago there really was no point making it look so obviously stage-y.
  • Branden
That is true, but I think people are going to think that its another "Chicago" and don't watch it. That's what I was implying. I will see it.
  • pete
daniel day-lewis, yes please. other than that, no thanks.
  • lol
    this looks own
  • freemachine
At first, hearing Dench's voice, I thought it was a new Bond film. Then the B/W footage made me think that they resurrected Federico Fellini. Ultimately I came to my senses and recognized that as much as I hate musicals, this looks pretty excellent. I'll probably just Netfix this unless I hear that Daniel Day-Lewis kills someone by the end of the film. Ok, "I'm finished"!
  • yeah i like daniel day lewis most when he's either angry or killing something, but both preferably. "this is a kill!"
  • WOW!
  • There are 3 reasons why I'll see this movie:

    Daniel
    Day
    Lewis
  • vva
Other than Daniel Day Lewis, I think I'll stick with the masterpiece that is 8 1/2.
  • Oh that totally slipped my mind! My bad. Good call, C'on.
  • SOS
Any film starring Daniel Day Lewis is a pretty safe bet
  • Fred
More like a pretty boring bet.

    Needs more explosions and one-liners.
