pixarcharactereggs

MTV has confirmed something I have suspected since I screened the first teaser to Pixar’s Up.

For those of you who don’t know, Pixar hides many easter eggs in their films (you can see our compilation of the WALL-E easter eggs here). They often like to include characters from their upcoming films in the backgrounds of the frame. For example, Boo’s fish toy in Monsters Inc ended up being the title character of Finding Nemo. A kid in the doctor’s office in Finding Nemo was reading a comic book of The Incredibles. WALL-E appeared in 2D on the Ratatouille DVD short film Your Friend the Rat. And Up’s Dug the dog appeared in silhouette in Brad Bird’s Ratatouille chasing Remy through the walls of a building.

A new character from Toy Story 3 is hidden in one of the scenes, do you know which one? Details and photo after the jump.

So when the teaser trailer for Pixar’s newest film Up premiered last year, I noticed a cute little teddy bear underneath the bed of sequence where Carl’s house floats by a child’s bedroom window. I wondered if that could possibly be a new character from Toy Story 3. Up producer Jonas Rivera confirms this in a recent interview, saying that “under her bed is one of the new stars of ‘Toy Story 3’.” No word on the character’s name just yet, or which actor or animator will be providing the bear’s voice.

In that short four second scene alone, there are a bevy of Pixar Easter eggs.

The flowers on the young girl’s wall is a call back to the flowers on Boo’s door from Monsters, Inc, a film also directed by Up filmmaker Pete Docter. The yellow ball on the floor is the most obvious, hailing from Pixar’s 1986 short film Luxo, Jr, which is where the hopping lamp in the animation studio’s logo also comes from.

The drawing on the wall shows Dug the dog and Kevin the Bird, creature’s Carl meets later in his adventure. This is kinda funny because technically Dug and Kevin even had a presence in the film’s teaser trailer, even if you weren’t aware of it.

I’m curious about the dog painting on the wall. Update: /Film commenter Vanessa thinks the bulldog it’s one of Dug’s “doggie friends” — Gamma, seen below.

all i can do is smile :D
  • bobdisgea
i think this may just be the best pixar movie yet. better than toy story or wall e.
  • Awesome stuff. Can't wait for Up and Toy-Story 3 or any Pixar movie.
  • Wow, I hadn't realized that Pixar had all these easter eggs until now.
  • jayman
i think found MRS. Incredible at the end of TOY STORY 3
  • Vanessa
I believe the bulldog it's one of Dug's doggie friends -- Gamma.
  • Matt
Can't wait. Don't see it being better than WALL-E, that was a masterpiece, but I'm sure it will be amazing.
  • JNS
I bet the pink bear belongs the day care center featured in Toy Story 3.
  • And I thought the Bear was from The Bear and the Arrow....oh well...I'll name the bear Slashie until Pixar gives him a name
  • larry08
"the bear and the bow" is the right name of that movie in which you speak , and the pink bears name is LOTSO he's the bad toy in the new film
  • Wasn't there also some connection between Bug's Life and Toy Story? Or am I making this up?
  • Simmy25
in Bug's Life the pizza planet truck is parked beside the van we see when flik goes to town__and in Toy Story 2 we see Heimlich (and maybe another character, cant really remember) walking on a leaf when buzz goes looking for woody
  • Oh that's right. Thanks Simmy!
  • Marko
Clearly he was actually talking about those slippers that are under the bed.
  • Brian
Awesome stuff but how is the bear under the bed? It's sitting beside it?
  • Jeff Wincze
" I wondered if that could possibly be a new character from Toy Story 3. " I find it difficult to believe that you "wondered" this during the trailer. I mean, come on.
  • Actually, I have an article in the /Film drafts from right after the teaser trailer was released. I never published it because it was too speculative. And I'm not the only one. I believe one of the Pixar blogs actually posted a blog post about it a week or so later. I have no reason to lie... seriously.
  • Jim
Why did he have to lie? That particular scene is filled with Pixar in-jokes, even Dug and Kevin were in it.
  • Haha, I can hear the bears voice already. Pixar never does anyone wrong, I sound like a broken record, but man..I really love them.
  • Simmy25
    lol...I know the feeling
  • ...and Pixar continues why they're the best. These images are fantastic.
  • I seriously wasn't aware of any of these easter eggs that were hidden. I wonder if they are going to hide other character for Toy Story 3
  • Brillant! What about the toy plane on the floor? I think it is from the aerial battle scene in UP.
  • Jim
That plane was in Toy Story.
  • Kris
the dog painting on the wall is of a Boston Terrier, not a bulldog.
  • starscream9289
The flowers on that girl's wall look nothing like the flower's on Boo's closet.
  • starscream9289
The flowers on that girl's wall look nothing like the flowers on Boo's closet.
  • yeah, that one seems like a stretch. you can start doing that with any little thing and come up with some sort of connection. (the girl playing is an obvious reference to boo, because they both have pigtails)
  • Simmy25
agreed. they don't even have the same number of petals__but I understand the felling of wanting to find every bit of hidden information in all the pixar films....I also suffer from it
  • joker47
it says on Wikipedia that Ned Beatty has an unconfirmed role in "Toy Story 3"...the bear could be it!
  • my favorite easter egg is still the Pizza Planet truck from Toy Story being in every one of these movies.
  • xavier
The Pizza Planet truck (The Yo Truck) is in the last sceen of the movie. Look on the left side parked cars. Its the last one on top.
  • xavier
I may have seen it when the house 1st takes off but could not tell for sure do to angle of camera.
  • Jim
The props in the scene look really really simple but in HD all kinds of textures just pop out.
  • Of course, sometimes children need to be successful animated films of the world that I watch my films so far away and I went to my childhood years I was a different feeling this sense of a young man I totally did make my films my films izlicem which izlemicemde very good filim
    My Dans
  • nice find...
  • igotmeaWoody
[spoiler] the bears name is LOTSO he's the bad guy in the new movie. fyi
  • Simmy25
oh my....this is going to be epic!
  • Josh
My God. He would make the perfect bad guy. A big pink stuffed animal with an incredibly manly voice.

    PERFECT!
  • FZJ
Toy Story will always be my first and favorite Pixar film
    i luv this one already
And I cant wait for Toy Story 3, relive my childhood memories all over again...
  • Floriane
I went to the premiere of Up! in Lyon, France (for the opening of the Cannes Festival) and all I can tell is that it's simply a FANTASTIC movie ! Pixar is the BEST animation studio EVER ! :D During the movie I only noticed the Luxo Jr. ball... I'll just have to go and watch it again when it comes out in France at the end of July ! ;) Not a problem at all !
  • Welcome back to andy's room. Three new pixar characters were; Kevin the bird, Dug the dog, & Lotso the teddy bear (Replaced old ones until 2005).
  • xavier
During the last scene as the camera pans down on some parked cars.
The YO Truck (which has appeared in every Pixar movie) can be seen.

It is the last car parked on the left. You can see it for 2 secs just before the camera goes to credits.

I think I saw the Yo truck earlier when Carl's house 1st takes off but I could not tell for sure.
  • Another hidden picture is the scene where the couple in Up are at the travel agency. The phamplets on the counter show the picture of the girl on the beach from the Pixar short with the snow man in the snow globe.
  • manuel
I just saw Up for the second time today, and could swear that the first father to pin a badge on his kid at the end is none other than Frozone. Can anyone confirm?
  • jackie
but... the bear isn't under the bed, it's next to it. whatever that toy is that is actually under the bed looks a bit like another slinky toy... perhaps a new friend for slink?
  • tony
If you look closely in the movie cars when lighting mcqueen is going to get a pit stop (with the hudson hornet and the rest of the gang) right when he stops in the background you could see Wall-E going from left to right
you might need to see it frame by frame.
