kevin smith green hornet

Five years ago Kevin Smith was hired to write and direct a big screen adaptation of The Green Hornet. Smith dropped out after getting cold feet, fearing he wouldn’t be able to handle an action -heavy big budget comic book film. As many of you know, the film since passed on to Seth Rogen who is co-writing and will star as the title character in a Michel Gondry-directed adaptation. But it looks like Smith will be revisiting his Green Hornet story…

….to be released in comic book form. Smith tells EW that he was asked to write an arc on the comic book series but had to decline due to other commitments (which I’ll get to in a minute).

“But then I thought ‘I already wrote a Hornet story once…’ It’s the Hornet movie I’d make if I was making it today. And there’s no better time to do that than before Seth Rogen and Michel Gondry’s version defines the character for the mainstream. We haven’t picked an interior artist yet, but we’ve got some stellar cover talent on board already: Alex Ross, John Cassaday, Jae Lee, and David Finch.”

The sketch above is from Alex Ross. The story covers the passing of the torch from Britt Reid to his son Britt Jr.  Smith explains further on his blog: “So While it’s not a straight-up adaptation of the “Green Hornet” movie script I wrote some years back, it’s definitely gonna take its cues from that script - just as that script took its cues from all the source material available (radio, TV, comics). So this is about as close as I’ll get to making that “Green Hornet” flick I walked away from directing all those years ago, when I was too chicken-shit and gay-in-love with my own characters to try something outside my comfort zone.”

Smith is also doing a twelve issue Batman mini-series called “The Widening Gyre”, which will be split into two volumes and separated by a 6-month break. The first six scripts are already completed, and the half-year break gives the filmmaker/writer time to finish the second set.

“The story sees Batman taking a fledgling vigilante under his wing,” Smith writes. “Does it sound like a tale for the ages? No; sounds like it’s been done before. It has. But still, “Gyre” somehow manages to be pretty original. I guarantee there’s stuff in this story that makes you go “I’ve never seen that in a comic before,” or “How come someone more talented than this fat dick didn’t think of this first?” Granted, I’m a little biased.”

Smith is currently in New York City doing prep for his next film, a comedy called A Couple of Dicks, starring Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan.

  • I still would have liked to see Kevin Smith do this movie, but this is good news. I'll definitely pick up the comic for a read.
  • NIce I'll look into both Green Hornet and Batman comics he'll eventually have out...lets hope he doesn't give these the Daredevil: Bullseye treatment
  • Yeah seriously. Finish your stuff Kev!
  • Why on earth is he working with Tracy Morgan?
That man is the epitome of unfunny and just completely annoying.
  • Merciful_budah
I don't know, that scene of him in jay and Silent Bob Strike Back is comedy gold. And he's pretty funny in 30 rock. I think the real trick is to pair him with a director who knows his capabilities and isn't going to challenge him with something he can't do or overuse the things he can.
  • I'm sorry Matt_od. but you are simply wrong. Have you not seen 30 Rock? Tracy Morgan is comic silver to gold. I appreciate your opinion but I just don't see it as having merit.
  • Yes, I've seen 30 Rock and I find it to be unbearable.
I'm sorry if that is not the populist opinion, but I'm entitled to my own.
  • You've lost your right to having an opinion by being wrong. I don't make the rules.

Yeah man, your obviously entitled to your opinion, but your question was "Why on earth is he working with Tracy Morgan". Well, an ass load of people (not including you) love that show and find him hilarious. Perhaps Kevin Smith is in the majority.
  • wow, you're just kind of a douche, aren't you?
  • Yeah, admittedly I test medium to high in douche-baggery.

    But I'm not a hater.
  • gah
I would love to see Kevin Smith do a comic book movie. And people need to lighten up on the guy, I know he's somewhat of a fanboy punching bag. Honestly, even if you dont like his films, most people will agree after watching an evening with or listening to smodcast, it's really hard to dismiss him as being untalented or a hack. and his previous comic work on Daredevil and Green Arrow was amazing even though his last Batman mini series was not that great.
  • i was thinking about buying his last Batman mini series, but I hated hated the art.
  • Mattalica
The art in that book made me sick just looking at it ( cacophony )...they weren't bad drawings or anything but the style and color made me want to vomit, was going to buy the whole series but after looking at that red batman cover it really was annoying to look at and brought nausea to my stomach...this isn't a complete diss to the book, it's my gods honest opinion, sorry Kevin...let Walt Flanagan and his dog that drew that last book sit out for the next one...if ur goin 12 rounds with a batman book get tim sale and jeph loeb to help you...ur famous, get other talented famous people to help...fuck..I'd do the drawings for free if u would let me...
  • I dont think Kevin Smith will ever take on anything serious, he hasn't got the balls!...he has got the gut for it though, oh yes! all the fucking cakes...snoogins!
  • Sean
Kato better not be a woman as depicted above in that Ross sketch! i hate when they do that!
  • shatner
God what's wrong with writers in this site?! STOP SWEARING! Not needed. Other than that great work with the site. Kirk approves!
  • Infrafan
Nice to know that some of that material won't go to waste. Oh, that Alex Ross sketch makes me drool. Ross is one of my heroes, not to mention Smith. Although I do hope that one day Smith will get a chance to do a comic book movie, his work in comics is good enough for now.

"And then they duck behind a rock."
  • Merciful_budah
As long as he gets this thing published on a realistc schedule I'll read it.
Ah heck, who am I kidding, I'll read it even if it gets delayed two years.

    Kevin smith rules

Most of Smith's work is pure crap. However, I do believe that he is underrated and has yet to fulfill his potential. I hope this works out.
  • I wonder when someone will give Kevin Smith a chance at directing a superhero movie.

Who knows maybe Smith might turn out to be the next Favreau if someone gives him the opportunity.
  • Read the article again.

Kevin admitted to chickening out on directing Green Hornet a few years ago, in which he also wrote the script (and now is being adapted into a comic by Smith himself). If he still has that mentality, it's probably not gonna happen now.
  • I wasn't referring to what the article stated on his positioning on The Green Hornet project.

I'm hoping he gets the chance to direct a bigger more iconic hero from either the Marvel or DC vault. I should have probably specified I suppose.
  • The reason why Smith chickened out from Hornet because he felt like he couldn't handle action. So my point being is if Smith doesn't have the confidence to do Hornet, he's not going to do a DC/Marvel movie.

And he even admitted to it.
  • Hmm I see your point.

Well a director who isn't confident at tackling the material probably shouldn't direct until he feels sure enough about his own adaptation abilities.

Nice to see that he is at least aware and admits it. Seeing as Smith is such a big comic book aficionado it doesn't surprise me that he has this "view" when it comes to adapting anything comic book related into film.
  • I mean..I think it would be cool if he did one.

Kevin once stated in an interview that he wouldn't handle the action too well AND the pressure of the fanboys. If you think about it, there's a lot at stake when you're doing a comic book movie. I think after the aftermath of his involvement with Tim Burton's Superman didn't help his views either.

But yeah, I give Smith a hand for being completely honest about his abilities as a filmmaker.
  • Merciful_budah
He's in something of a unique position for fanboy fallout too if you think about it. He's been one of (if not the) most vocal critic for comic book movies out there, so if he really screwed up a popular comic franchise that could put a dent in his credibility.
  • To be far he was only really critcal of Brian Singer's Superman Return and it was more about the script then the directing. He gave praise to Singer's X-Men films and I've also heard Smith defend Brent Ratners X3 saying it wasn't a bad film.
  • yeah but, if there's any franchise that is slim in fanatical fan boys it's "the Green Hornet." There mostly geriatric and indigent.

That being said I'd like to see him work on a comic film, and I'd PREFER it not to be such an iconic character that he feels the fan boy "Don't F with my childhood" crap. He's creative, why doesn't he do one of his own design. Perhaps not "Bluntman and Chronic".
  • Branden
Hmm... I'm intrigued that this news.
  • The Green Hornet could be pretty funny. I don't know about Seth Rogen in the lead role, but I'm interested. I'll probably go see this.
  • Um, Alex Ross and John Cassaday? I'll pick 'em up for the covers.
  • wellwellwell
It seems like Kevin Smith is trying to subvert the Seth Rogen vehicle, which honestly sounds more interesting to me. I feel like Smith had his chance but now it's gone, he should let some other dudes have their chance. I'd be really annoyed if he diluted what looks to be an awesome reboot by Rogen & Gondry with his own film.
  • I'm down for that Batman mini at least. I just finished British Literature and keep finding references to Yeats in the strangest places.
  • edc2
how is it a movie that is being released if its a comic?
  • This is great news... I like the way smith is spacing out his obligations. The time (6 months) in between the two batman arcs allows him time to finish while he keeps up with his directing schedule and wont let him fall behind like he did on past projects... I will def pick up his version of the green hornet, and think Rogens version will be great as well!!!!
