VOTD: Old Star Trek With Lens Flares

zz4fe4b0a3

What if Star Trek: The Original Series had lens flares like the new JJ Abrams reboot? What would it look like? Partmor has created a video that does just that. Watch it embedded after the jump.

Thanks to /Film reader Jim H for the tip.

  • Well it was a nice try but way to bright, they werent that bright in the movie.
  • Mikey
Yeah, much of that seemed like it didn't fit in and felt like he just placed random lens flares in different scenes.
  • You could be referring to JJ or Partmor with that comment.
  • haha I was about to say.
  • Probably both.
  • i wasn't bugged by the lensflare in the movie and the complaint is already getting kinda played off. but this was neat.
  • Exactly. I don't classify it as a valid criticism. I knew they were in the movie, I liked the usage, but NONE of them ever took me out of the movie or distracted me. I just thought they were really cool from a design standpoint.
  • Why does everyone get so bothered by it? I enjoyed it, gave it a nice change of things and in my opinion made it seem more "real"
  • It was nice but way overdone.

I heard many people calling it Lens Flare - The Movie.
  • DC Donner
    I don't believe you.
  • Solid
I didn't know whether I was watching star trek or a 4th of july fireworks show.

facepalm at all of you suckers, for critisizing a fan's work
  • This is the problem with fanboys. They can't even take a great joke like this.

That was funny and well done. And yes it's an obnoxious on-camera effect. Right up there with shakey-cam and bullet-time camera swoops.

    you're very right sir

    Kirk: Bridge to Engineering
    Scotty (off camera): Ay, Cap'n
Kirk: Mr. Scott. I need...those lens flares, andineedthem...ten minutes ago.
Scotty: I'm giving her all she's got Cap'n. There just aren't any more lights on the ship. All we've got left are Uhura's scented candles.
    Kirk: Mr. Spock. Suggestions.
Spock: Sir, I do not understand your course of action. It is already so bright in here that I fear we may all suffer retinal damage. Would it not be more logical to turn off some of the lights before we go blind?
Kirk: Damn your eyes, Spock. I...MUST...have more lens flares. I've...gotadisease...and the only cure...ismorelensflares.
Spock: Perhaps Dr. McCoy can prescribe something for you.
Kirk: Bridge to Sick Bay. Bones are you there?
McCoy: I'm here, and I'm busy. What do you want?
Kirk: Bones, Spock is worried these lens flares might make us all go blind. Any suggestions?
McCoy: Dammit, Jim, I'm a doctor not an opthomologist! Oh, wait. I guess I am. I'll bring you guys some sunglasses.
  • Lol that is funny

While the new Star Trek did over use lens flares this little video was just to much. You could barely see anything where as in the new movie you can still see whats going on. The flares bothered me more watching this one minute video then it did watch the two hour movie.

    Parody [par-uh-dee] -noun:
to imitate (a composition, author, etc.) for purposes of ridicule or satire.
  • When your lens flares are causing lens flares, you know you have a problem.
  • Juan
The overuse of lens flare in this video WAS the whole point of the thing!! They are making fun of the movie's use of it by overdoing it for the video! It's a parody!! You tools!!
  • The video clip made me chuckle but the people who didn't get the joke and have commented to complain that the lens flare was too bright made it 10x funnier.
  • JNS
Star Trek is the ugliest looking movie since . . . I dunno, Push.
  • Made me laugh :D
  • Ryan
    lol That's hilarious!
  • shatner
I didn't even notice the falres in the movie because I was so engrossed so why is everyone making such a big deal. The film was great. Enough said
  • kevin
    watch a Michael Bay movie...
there is a crap load of lens flare and shots directly into lights.
creative choice, which in my opinion works, unless overused.
Haven't seen Star Trek, but I will.
  • I really didn't even the lense flares or least it didn't distract my viewing experience.
  • lol I think they intentionally made it that bright, you know to poke fun. The flares in the actual movie were hardly distracting and I think they added a nice stylistic touch. Funny vid!
  • The movie did it a lot better, since it had a more professional crew.

This is a nice try, but the flares are way too exaggerated with that color scheme here.
  • It's supposed to be a joke ... -.-
  • Lols, looks like someone took my comment too serious. My meaning was that both works (the movie and this clip) had unnecessary lens flares.
  • omar swarez
what don't you get? The lens flares are supposed to be exaggerated in the clip. It's a parody.
  • The point is to take something that was clearly (to most was subtle but not to others) in the film and exaggerating it. It wasn't meant to be subtle but in your face.

Jeeze some of you people need to move out of your parent's basement if you're going to criticize a PARODY. Sadness...
