barcode scanner star trek

Many people have made fun of the new Star Trek enterprise bridge, saying it looks like the inside of an Apple Store. /Film reader Kjell points out that some of the “joysticks” on the desk at the front of the bridge are actual Symbol m2004-I215 barcode scanners, the same model used in various retail stories, including Staples.

  • Nice. There was a few other things I thought looked a tad familiar, but I didn't notice this at all.
  • Gives a new meaning to "Scan for lifeforms", doesn't it?

"The only thing I can detect are huge savings in Staples, Captain!"
  • LOL. They should've stolen that EASY button instead. I'm sure it would've been a lot more useful than a couple of scanners.
  • Dunno about you but those are some GIANT barcode scanners. Where do you need those things? Sams/Costco for the 100 pack of adult diapers?
  • lol nice find!
  • Schu
    Gotta save money somewhere!
  • Couldn't agree more. Plus a little innovation to save money never hurts.
  • This reminds me of Episode 1, when Qui-Gon used a Lady Remington as some sort of futuristic communication device.
  • wow thats crazy
  • musicsoup
i don't get the issue people have with the inside of the enterprise. i think that's exactly what things will look like in the future. it's like going from a 1988 Jeep Cherokee to a 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee. It can't continue to look like an outdated box forever, eventually everything needs an upgrade. And lots of things look like iMacs and iPhones and whatnot. We won't be getting the gritty dirty future you're all expecting from movies. Things will be slick and clean and shiny. Get over it.
  • I don't think any of us have the slightest idea what an actual starship from the 23rd century is going to look like, least of all you.
  • musicsoup
    well, let's get started.

i wasn't specifically referencing a starship from the 23rd century, or claiming that i know what a starship would look like, cause that would be retarded.

i was referring to the immediate future and where our technology is headed. technology today is slick and shiny, no matter where you buy it.

i also wasn't referring to any specific place on Earth as being slick and shiny, because i'm only talking about the technology being slick and shiny. i don't care what it looks like in 3rd world countries, because i'm simply talking about TECHNOLOGY! sure, it's dirty and gritty and rundown in other parts of the world, but an ipod is still an ipod no matter where it is. an imac is still an imac. an iphone is still an iphone.

does that make sense to you guys?
  • You make absolutely no sense!

We're living in the future of past times, so, by your logic, we are supposed to be living in a shiny and clean world! Which is of course not the reality.

Our "future" doesn't have to be any different, because we don't live in a "special" time (and never will).

Take a look at our currens spaceships, they're functional over sleek. Form follows function specially when they cost that much.
  • Brad
Uh, in comparison to the old west, or medieval Europe we are most certainly living in a clean and shiny world.
  • Really?

Go to any third world country. And no, I don't mean the capitals or places where 5 star hotels are.
  • Smash
What a ridiculous statement. Brad specifically referenced America and Europe, two places that have made significant progress over the centuries. That's an example of advancement.

Just because Somalia is still a third world hellhole does not mean living conditions in New York or London haven't improved.
  • Daniel
I blame Haplo for the retardation I suffered from reading his posts.
  • I'm sure what Musicsoup meant was that the TOS 60's design was neither practical or futuristic in a modern sense, and Star Trek 2009 was more believable in terms of design.

I however, still believe a 23rd century faster-than-light starship will exceed everyone's expectation.
  • grbo
    I like my 1988 jeep cherokee :-(
  • How much did this film cost?
  • I think the estimate is around $150 million.
  • They spent the money perfecting lens flares, and waxing the iBridge.

I kid, I kid. I do agree that they could have acquired better joysticks though.
  • Staples 666
    yayyy kjell
  • The little device that Scotty is looking into during the transporter scene is actually a Plantronics CS70N headset. He's looking into the microphone. I LMAO when I saw this because I work for a company that sells these, and I know it well.
  • whsmith
I also noticed some forklifts in the background of one scene which are an actual existing product

  • Kjell
I didn't expect them to actually post this haha
  • ulmann
I'm sure it's a deliberate nod to the original series. McCoy's medical scanner in the original 60s series was a salt shaker, that the prop director found at a flea market. I'm sure there are lots of other easter egg things like this in the movie.
  • hmm.. Interesting. Thank you for pointing that out!
  • GregoryV
I'm sure the ceiling lamps are from Ikea.
  • Konrad
Nope. Not a single Ikea product in this whole movie, which was something I appreciated IMMENSELY. I used to work at Ikea, and I see their products everywhere... no fun.
  • I can imagine the face of someone playing with their Nintendo Ds while waiting for the next scene and out of a sudden *BEEP* and the screen shows (Nintendo DS $129.99)
  • jojomcgraw
it's the eye of the illuminati
  • Just a guy
I'm not a Star Trek fan, so i haven't seen it. Is this a joke? I hope so. This is pitiful.
  • How is it pitiful? What an idiot you sound like... you think anyone can actually tell what the hell those things are? Probably only the 0.1% of viewers that happen to work at staples
Film is illusion, nothing is real, all that matters is if it looks convincing.
  • dude watch the movie before you judge it. I was not a trek fan either but the movie was great
  • I wouldn't call it pitiful.

The original Lightersaber hilts were made from flash guns from old cameras with very little added to them.
  • JP Dyno
pretty common thing to use products that look odd or different as props. In "V for Vendetta" the cop uses a anti-bugging device, I have the exact same thing, except mine is a single LED reading-book lamp...
  • furpurr
No, it is not a joke. As a matter of fact, EVERY ST series is {supposedly} said to have odd, cheap little items used in them, as a nod to the original series, & the "scanner" that Dr. McCoy uses. Do you know what Geordi La Forge's "VISOR" really is? ;) :)
  • If you ran the scanner across Nero's tattoo, it would actually read, "Eric Bana."
  • Nice find, i honestly would of never noticed because im not a big shopper.. most of the items i buy are online or from local grocery stores.

One thing i don't understand is why some trekkers/trekkies get so upset with changes, this is 2009 not 1966, this film had to of been made to please the casual movie goers, hardcore fans need to learn when going into a movie like this you cannot expect a full 110% true to source material.. then again i have never been a trek fan so i really can't argue but im sure you get my point.
  • Brad
Way to miss the point. There's a reason I chose the old west and medieval Europe as my examples. They are the past of the first world.
  • sweded version of star trek can look just as high tech on the cheap...
  • Bob Funn
Its called "Making a movie". what did you think, they manufactured every part? This has been done in probably every movie you've ever seen...
  • shadow
it's called efficient production design, you can either buy a cheep existing prop that's known to be okay on the eyes or you can spend 5 times more for a custom prop that's not guaranteed to look right.
  • bjh
Abrahms just hit the "easy" button and voila the enterprise was born.
  • Fir3Wolf
Having worked retail a lot before it was clear that those were barcode scanners lol. The first time they showed up I didn't think of them as anything else and joked around about it with a buddy of mine. Either way small thing and doesn't change how awesome the movie is.
  • This reminds me of the first season finale of TNG, wherein an alien parasite was carried around in the Trapper Keeper substitute I used in Middle School.
  • Art imitating life, eh?
  • Stang68
Here is another shot of DIFFERENT scanners used on the bridge! They are black and on the desk where the girl in red is standing! lol

Wasn't this a story about 2 months ago?
