watchmen manhattan screaming

Warner Home Video has announced that Watchmen will be released on DVD and Blu-ray simultaneously in late July, either July 21st or July 28th, to coincide with San Diego Comic-Con International.

Warner Bros is really proud that the Director’s Cut Blu-ray will include a feature which will allow you to view the film simultaneously and share comments with your Facebook friends. It might have been cool if you could somehow host a screening online for your friends, but everyone needs to own the Blu-ray for the “viewing party” to work. And Hollywood wonders why Blu-Ray isn’t selling as well as they had hoped.

Lets get some better features people! Is Disney the only company that kinda gets it? I have yet to meet anyone who has actually recorded or watched one of the home-recorded blu-ray live commentary tracks. The whole thing seems rather pointless. Lets get some cool interactive content.

The theatrical version of the movie will be released on a standard DVD with no bonus features ($28.98 msrp). The director’s cut will be available in both DVD ($34.99msrp) and Blu-ray ($35.99 msrp). It’s previously been reported that an Ultimate Edition will be released later this fall in time for Christmas, which will incorporate the Black Freighter and the comic book stand ins and outs.

Be fair, Peter - it's quite impressive how, just when you think studios can't get any dumber, they go and lower the bar some more.
  • I mean... really? As an avid film fan and a moderate facebook user I honestly can't imagine ever using this feature. While several of my friends who have PS3s are absolute facebook addicts as well, I could never see us wanting to organize such a venture. I can't stand talking with people in the room while watching a film, much less sharing comments over facebook while watching. Yuk.

I think i'm going to buy the directors cut, eventhough i am waiting for the ultimate edition. But i have to have something to watch until then..
  • People have already dumped MySpace and they are in the process of dumping Facebook & Twitter. This won't last as a feature.
  • I would never use this feature but you have to respect them for exploring new ways for audiences to complain about how they screwed up the Watchmen.
  • I guess WB just realized how they were doing so many things right lately in makign films that they felt obligated to drop the ball somewhere
  • Blu-rays are having a hard time catching on because of prices, not because of dumb features (as Fox and Disney is expected to show, people in general don't care about features). You can usually find a 6-month old DVD on sale for $5-10 cheaper than when it first came out. The Dark Knight BR still costs what I paid back in December.
  • Lets not jump all over them for this. Is it stupid? Yes, but I'd be willing to bet that 90% of people who buy or rent DVD's don't take advantage of any of the extras included on the disc, for the most part people just want to see the movie.

Not that I care for the DC of Watchmen, but I feel the studios have marketed Blu Ray exclusive features badly. I thought we'd get some cool content but, really, they are really weak. Don't like going online to watch lame content that they could have put on the disc. Don't care to hear what other people think on line or on some lame social network site. Just give me my movie in high quality picture and sound along with all the usual bells and whistles that is special features. And I don't mean those standard, mediocre EPK footage.

So far they've done it right with the Bladerunner & Hellboy 2. And to some extent, Dark Knight. Got the movie in great quality but features were ok.
  • The picture fits perfectly.

Blu-Ray is not having trouble selling. From figures last year, DVD sales are down 2%, while BD sales are up 300%. It's a matter of who wants to actually shell out $20-$30 to watch a movie. If you owned Blu-Ray, you'd know how much better it looks than standard DVD. Period. As for complaining about BD not selling because of price, why the hell is $30 for BD so much more to pay than $20 for DVD? If $30 is expensive to you, then I bet $20 is as well; so just rent it for $4!
But, yeah, most of these "interactive" BD features are pointless. But they're just features, so you can ignore them.
  • lol. Who cares? This won't hinder your movie watching experience. It's just something they added to test.

And the BD adoption rate is almost double that of DVD at the same point in it's life. So yea, I guess BD isn't doing well. LOL

    what is 'blu-ray'?
  • To be honest, I just want some good documentaries and perfect picture and sound. I was highly disappointed with The Dark Knight's bonus features. The documentaries were sorely lacking. Great film though.

But I am open to interactive content, since Blu-ray is capable of so much more than DVD.
  • DOUCHE'
You guys are fucking stupid. Blu-Ray is selling well. When was the last time a movie company let you allow massive amounts of people to view your movie online.

    This entire thread just sucks.
  • Gennaro Gattuso
Good work upping the quality of the thread, fella.
  • When's the Criterion version coming out?
  • luke_test
Why can't studios use BD-Live for something useful?

Like when Let the Right One In had all those crappy subtitles. We could have, in theory, used BD Live to download the correct subtitles (this was one of the features promoted for BD Live)

Yet all they give us this is group commentary rubbish.
  • I'm sorry, I think blu-ray isn't selling because it's expensive....and the economy sucks. people are renting
  • Another bad use of BD-live that's actually a rip-off and not a "special feature" is streaming of deleted scenes, gag reels etc. These things should be INCLUDED ON THE DISC! Especially when the standard DVD has them. I'm looking at you Tropic Thunder on Bluray.
  • buenodeus
    lol!

what do kids like these days? thats the market we didnt get last time, right? they didnt see the movie because they were on their facebooks...

i have it! connect the two, remember synergy? this is better. way better.

watchmen + facebook = foolproof way of making money.

    you're welcome.
  • I agree Peter. Blu-Ray is stupid.
  • I don't understand why the Director's Cuts are only a dollar apart when one of them is DVD and the other is Blu-Ray. That DVD better be packed with a crapload of features the Blu-Ray doesn't have. Not that it matters because I'm not paying $34 for a DVD.
  • JD_
Blu-ray player sales went up 72% during the first quarter of 09.
  • xsageonex
I think about 80%(random figure) of people who own DVD's care about the extra features let alone the commentary, I love watching films, and I have vast DVD and BLuRay collection, I didnt move up from VHS to DVD because of the features(actually, maybe a lil)I wanted the better picture and audio quality plus the ability to jump to any scene faster. I cant really tell you the last time I even WANTED to hear the commentary,(I dont like anyone talking over my movie!) Even if I do own a crapload of special editions and collectors editions, Istill I havent got to watching almost any of the extra features, and I think most of the consumers are with me on this one.So, I buy my BluRays solely on the fact that theyll look a hell of a lot better and sound better on my 50" plasma and 5.1 home theater set up, yes the features are a plus and maybe one day Ill finish watching those making of videos included. For now though I am content with my HD content as it is, even id that was the only thing packed on the disc, although I do gotta agree with a comment from above somewhere, why do DVD prices fall sharply after a while and BluRay movies are pretty much the same since they were released! Is Black Friday the only time to save on BD's!
  • At this stage in the history of DVD, almost nobody knew what they were. It was much later the price tumbled.
  • jen
i absolutely hate the existence of blu ray ,it's just a pointless format ,nothing like the junp from vhs to dvd . i have a ps3 and 4 blu ray movies ,but i buy dvd's..okay the picture quality may be superior ,but im not enough of an arsehole to care . ill buy watchmen ultimate edition on dvd and just ignore the blu ray.
  • Andrew
Finally, at least we know when the damn thing is coming out! I don't care how many versions they release, I'm going to buy them ALL! MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

The Blu-Ray for this is gonna ROCK.
  • tom.
uhh, blu-ray is selling just fine...
  • this does not escape many horror flim dance world is a very good flim almost dead even more beautiful than beautiful
  • Wait wait wait, screw the blue ray that ain't the story. I will buy this in july.... and then the real version comes out at the end of the year. Damn it, I hate double dipping!
  • Brody
This film was a disapointing failure.
  • Wasabi Steak
I see nothing wrong with this, its an added optional feature and its not like its comprimising the amount of features on the discs.

You dont have to use it. People are just being cranky for nothing.
  • just give us the directors cut at a reasonable price. That's all I'm looking forward to, not talk to my friends on the computer about what I think of the film.
  • mrbign
    By "Blu-Ray isn’t selling as well as they had hoped" do you mean;
    a) this is easily the biggest selling bluray movie (by percentage of total sales),
or b) bluray adoption is still outpacing DVD's initial uptake,
or c) that DVD sales have decreased year on year while bluray sales have quadrupled?

Regardless - I agree that the facebook thing is stupid.
  • I paid a lot for a version with no such special features :) Still one cool crazy movie and i did enjoy the Full HD images /video on this.
