You might recall that JJ Abrams originally approached William Shatner to make an appearance in Star Trek, but the actor declined because he felt like it was nothing more than a tiny cameo.

“We actually had written a scene with him in it that was a flashback kind of thing,” Abrams told AMCtv. “But the truth is, it didn’t quite feel right. The bigger thing was that he was very vocal that he didn’t want to do a cameo.”

I suggested a way that Shatner could still be involved in the inevitable sequel in our latest video blog. But now that people have seen Star Trek, it seems like the interest in Shatner’s involvement has almost completely disappeared. But I’ve wondered how was Shatner going to be involved in the original plan? IO9 talked to Trek screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, and discovered the details. Warning: possible spoiler if you haven’t yet seen the film.

Apparently the cameo would have taken place in that very last scene when Old Spock and New Spock finally meet each other. After he explained that he “couldn’t interfere, because it would have diverted [Kirk and Spock] away from their friendship” … “and that their friendship is the key to the whole sort of shebang,” elder Spock presented young Spock with “a recorded message from Kirk.” I’ve photoshopped a mockup above.

“He [elder Spock] said, “Don’t take my word for it.” And he handed him [younger Spock] a little holographic device and it projected Shatner,” revealed Kurtzman. “It was basically a Happy Birthday wish knowing that Spock was going to go off to Romulus, and Kirk would probably be dead by the time…”

And the message would have “turned into a voiceover, at the end of the movie.” Since the film is really about the begining of the Kirk/Spock friendship, this moment makes sense to me, and sounds (in theory) like more than just a cameo. Too bad Shatner decided it wasn’t a big enough role.

  • Wait, but Kirk died... so how would this make sense/?
  • Dave
I believe this might have been a gift given by Kirk when Spock first went to Romulus - Which was never stated in the series, so he could have conceivably spent the better part of a 100 years there trying to reconcile - and I think the Countdown comic said he spent 80 years there? So that kind of matches up with Kirk on the B to Spock on Romulus. Kind of.
  • Dave
Actually, take that back. Before a fanboy rips my bollocks off, Memory Alpha says he went there in 2368 - Many years after Kirks disappearance in the Nexus.

    So yup, this is bull.
  • Exactly, so I can see why this wasn't used. It would have created a huge plot hole that would have made every fanboy, and even non-fanboys, mad!
  • But they've given every other plot hole in the movie a pass...
  • They're not major holes that stand out to the common observer like this one would be!

    GENERATIONS NEVER HAPPENED.

It was berman and braga's pissing on TOS.

    It never happened.
  • Brad
I know it won't happen, but I kind of think it would be awesome if Pine and Quinto eventually turn into the evil "Mirror, Mirror" versions of the characters.
  • First, we need an entire TV series based in the Mirror Universe. :D
  • Marko
Well the origins of the Mirror Universe were already explained in an Enterprise episode wherein the point of divergence happens with Earth's first contact with the Vulcans (I think).

Though the thing that confuses me is that if we're following an alternate timeline would there then be an alternate mirror universe as well? Or would that depend on the bearded Mirror Universe Spock going back in time as well?

I think it would be best if they left alternate realities alone for now.
  • Brad
Ah, didn't get into Enterprise. Probably no surprise there.
  • Mirror Spock blew up Romulus with Red Matter on purpose, creates a Black The Narada was in orbit, both Spock and The Narada are sucked back in time. etc.
  • Shatner should have just taken what they were going to give him. Anyway, I don't care about this Shatner thing. The movie was really good and who knows if his cameo would have been good or even necessary to the plot.
  • I'm glad he turned it down, the scene would have felt extremely forced, especially during that moment. Nope, I does not like it.

Shatner could have played a new character, and that would have been very cool. You could even have had him show up in each film as an Uncle or something. But to force a dead man to life, to bring him back as a hologram for a few seconds, or even to whisk present-reality Kirk back in time from the future, sounds pretty iffy at best. Just my opinion.

sorry i cant take shatner serious he just seems like a comedy actor by accident lol
  • RageTreb
The movie is better without him. It would have screwed with Generations, while without it the movie does a good job of not messing up any of the previously made canon (as all of it happened in another universe).
  • In this youtube video though Shatner denies all knowledge of being asked. Not sure i believe him though: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzOs4WEutQ8&fe...
  • flashbacks?
yes, better without him. i liked spock in it but that's as far as they need to go.
  • im glad he never appeared in the new film.
  • They worked Nimoy into it perfectly but... Shatner has turned himself into a joke. All he does is parody himself. Point in case - his Priceline commercial where he has the Asian "talk like him". Complete parody of his voice. And then his cameo in Fanboys. "I'm William Shatner. I can score anything." Yeah. Again. Parody of himself.

I don't know if I could have taken this movie seriously if he was in it. It was an absolute amazing movie but... he might have messed it all up.
  • You've actually interpreted my thoughts before I even thought that I would think that.

    Kudos to you, sir.
  • Guy
There is no way Shatner needed to be in this flick. The fact that he seems to have lost any ability to talk about the subject with dignity should be reason alone he plays no part in future Trek flicks. Nimoy by contrast was perfect in the movie and is a class act in comparison. I used to be a big Shatner fan but some of his latest rantings have left a sour taste.

When I read that Quinto was unable to do the Vulcan solute, and that JJ had to glue his fingers together, I thought that was silly. When I saw the movie and saw that Quinto actually couldn't do it properly, as you've chosen as the pic for this article, I was saddened. Very unfortunate, although it didn't detract from the film. I'm also still struggling with how I felt about the Old Spock / Young Spock interaction.

Wow that's original,,, maybe in 20 years they can CGI Pine's face over Shatner on the special edition GoldenRay Dvd.

The writing of Orci & Kurtzman, is proof that it doesn't matter how talented you may be, timing and pure luck are what it takes to become successful in Hollywood. Same goes for Abrams.
  • Its amazing how people can't let the old cast go. I did love Nimoy in it and wouldn't be surprised to see Shatner in the sequel. I think it would be more of a flash forward than time travel. One thing I wish would have happened in 1989- Adam West playing Bruce Waynes father. He turned the part down because he still wanted to be Batman.

  • BamaJuice
That would of been awesome. I could dig Adam West as Bruce's father. :p
  • dave
Yeah I think a flash forward in our new trek timeline would have been a better usage of shatner and nimoy.
  • MyNew Pep-Pep
I praise this new Star Trek as the greatest movie of all time! All the gaping and moronic plot holes in this are awesome. I would expect no less from the people who wrote it. Just as overrated as Iron Man.
  • razor
OMG man enough is enough out with the old in with the new, the lens flares where there to make the film shiny and new and not just in the sense of recreating it but also cuz its a new ythology being created and the end result wont be the same as last which is what we want cuz the previous end result was almost the death of star trek but i guess as long as they keep trying to bring knight rider back to tv trek is good to go
  • jubba
young spock would have said something like "i should tell kirk to start a diet now"...no wonder shatner didn't want in!
  • BamaJuice
That would be most good...Most good. ^_^
  • Bill
Oh man. Shatner's instincts are good. This would have been a George Lucas kind of ending. Why not just have a big celebration in the shuttlecraft bay at the end, with lots of cute aliens cavorting around, while a ghostly Shatner looks on and smiles?
  • Don't y'all remember that Shatner denied being approached by Abrams about this? Shatner never declined anything, because he was never asked. Shatner was vocal to the whole world that he didn't want to do just a cameo, and that is why Abrams never asked. I believe your opening statement to be false.
