Whatever Works
Sony Pictures Classics has released the official movie trailer for Woody Allen’s latest comedy Whatever Works. The film stars Larry David as an eccentric New Yorker who abandons his upper class life to lead a more bohemian existence. He meets a young girl from the south, played by Evan Rachel Wood, and her family and no two people seem to get along in the entanglements that follow.

I had a chance to see this film at ShoWest, and while it wasn’t as good as Vicky or Match Point, it was a thrill to see Allen’s cinematic return to New York City. David is great at playing the typical Allen neurotic cynical male protagonist, and Wood is perfect as the impressionable southern belle. I’m surprised that the trailer gives away the “punchline” of the movie,  even out of context it seems a bit odd. Check out the trailer after the jump, and leave your thoughts in the comments below.

Watch the trailer in High Definition on Apple.com. Whatever Works hits theaters on June 19th 2009.

  • The only bit that seemed odd was the jumping through the window. Hmmmm. Is that the punchline? I'm starting to hope so.
  • Wouldn't miss a Woody Allen film.
Wouldn't miss Larry David in a Woody Allen Film.

    I'll be there opening night.

Haha, this looks like a 2-hour Curb Your Enthusiasm episode.

"Nothing, right? And all that money you put in the tin box every sunday."

"That's a sin against God's law. He made the whole universe perfect. The oceans, the skies, the beautiful flowers!"
    "That's right, he's a decorator."

"I've NEVER played for the Yankees!"

And christ Evan Rachel Wood's hot as a dumb homeless broad.

Why do all the religious psychotics always wind up praying on my doorstep?

    hahaha i love larry david
  • Larry David is hilarious... this is a must-see

    Welcome home, Woody!
  • Woody Allen and Larry David, why didn't this happen sooner?! Can't wait to see.

I don't think Woody Allen's films require the punchline to be a mystery compared to the process he uses to get you there...I mean, Annie Hall started off telling you that the relationship doesn't work out, the trailer for Match Point gave away the big moral crisis of the character (though I admit not the twist)...the point is it looks funny, you can expect some solid if not spectacular one-liners, and an entertaining night if you like neurotic Jewish New York pseudo-intellectual jokes. So hurray!
  • I love Larry David! This movie is gonna be hysterical.
  • Ok, DEFIANTELY seeing this

It's nice to see Evan Rachel Wood not playing the same damn character from Thirteen. She is a great actress and it's great to see her doing something different. Also is it me or does she sound like Holly Hunter with the southern accent.
  • Larry David is the most hilarious guy ever. This looks good.
  • Larry David is the ultimate stand in for Woody Allan...
  • This looks really fun. Woody Allen or no, it's Larry David. I'm sure I and many others here are lifetime subscribers to his genius.

After mentioning that the "punchline" of the movie is in the trailer I feel like It's been spoiled with no warning of spoilers. That's how I feel.
  • The punchline is also the film's title :) so it's really not a big secret thing
  • Rick
So it's not when he jumps out the window?
  • nope
  • gah
yeah well thats how trailers are anymore unfortunately. cant really avoid it.
  • Ryan
...it's missing the beautiful cinematography we expect from allen's movies.

    also, is this digital?

Yeah, the trailer for this movie reveals the film's greatest flaw: the cinematography SUCKS
  • lol

You're right, the trailer spoils a rather crucial monologue. However, I really like the way Larry delivers it. Very effective.
  • Yeah, this is basically just another Woody Allen movie.
  • Looks awesome, Larry David lifts the quality of whatever he does!
  • I'm in. Woody plus Larry equals WoodyLarry.
