Keanu Reeves is Jekyll

reeves jekyll

Keanu Reeves will star in Jekyll, a modern day retelling of Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1886 classic novella The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde for Universal Pictures. The film will be directed by Nicolas Winding Refn, the filmmaker behind the Sundance hit Bronson and the 1996 Danish action crime thriller Pusher (you may have heard David Chen ramble on about this film, and the trilogy it spawned, in a previous /Filmcast). The film is being scripted by Justin Haythe, the BAFTA-nominated screenwriter of Revolutionary Road.

Details of Haythe’s contemporary re-imagining have not yet been revealed, but the original novella tells the tale of a “London lawyer who investigates strange occurrences between his old friend, Dr. Henry Jekyll, and the misanthropic Mr. Edward Hyde.” The story is best known for its portrayal of split personality, good vs. evil, and coining the popular phrase “Jekyll and Hyde”. The book has been adapted for film, tv and stage over 123 times.

Most adaptions tell the story from the viewpoint of Dr. Jekyll, eliminating the mystery aspect presented in the source material. I’m not sure a mystery could be told as the split personality character has become infused in pop culture. The BBC aired a six-part miniseries under the same title, which was also a contemporary adaptation, set in London. It will be interesting to see just how different Haythe’s take on the material may be.

If there is one thing Keanu Reeves is known for, it definitely isn’t the range of his acting abilities. Don’t get me wrong, he’s good at delivering a certain kind of performance. But I’m skeptical that he could pull off the split personality gig.

This project is unrelated to the announced Guillermo del Toro adaptation Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, which went into development in 2008. With del Toro’s busy schedule, I doubt we might ever see that gothic horror adaptation, and if we ever do, it is likely to be 10-15 years down the line.

  • I suspect Keanu Reeves will have to act a little outside his comfort zone for this, if thats the case, I'd see the movie just to see how that works.

Though actually I really only need to see the trailer for that.

Am I crazy or would it be kinda cool if Keanu plays Jekyll but another actor plays Hyde?
  • Hot Rod
Sorry, you're crazy. Having 2 actors would kill EVERYTHING the story is really about.

It honestly baffels me that someone sat somewhere and seriously thought "Well, we're making Jekyll & Hyde...you think Keanu Reeves is available?"
  • Haha, and then everyone nodded and agreed and replied "Yeah...what else would he be doing?"
  • I don't hate the idea of two actors. In the original short novella, Jekyll does seem to be physically different than Hide. Namely, smaller and shorter.
  • wtf
  • This is fine. Pusher is one of my favorite foreign series. What's sad is that it won't be able to live up to the FANTASTIC British series of the same name that came out a few years ago. If you're not familiar with it, it's on Netflix instant watch so get yourself familiar.

    Yep, agree completely.
For my money nothing can touch Stephen (Dr. Who) Moffet's BBC adaption 'Jekyll'. I'm pretty sure that is what got him Spielberg's Tin Tin job.
  • No, No, No, No. absolutely not! this project sounds great!!!! a good writer, a competent director, please don't ruin it with keanu. my god who keeps hiring this guy? did they see day the earth stood still? (okay, not entirely his fault, that one) but this guy cannot keep going around ruining projects, he must be stopped! put him back in his matrix bald nudey bubble from whence he came, let him be harvested! i demand it! he is not the one!
  • Hot Rod
There is no way Keanu can pull this off. He's been acting for what, 20-some years now...and it seems he's playing the same person every damn time. This would be good for someone like Johnny Depp or Hugh Jackman. Really any leading man with the slightest bit of range would be better than Reeves.
  • Swede
    Pusher is danish, not swedish.
  • Dane
Yeah! Pusher arent sweidsh... Its danish you idiot!
  • whoa
  • This is going to be interesting.

Are you telling me, I can dodge personalities?
  • so the two sides of my brain....are competing? duh duh duh.
  • That BBC "Jekyll" was fantastic. Check it out.[youtube OAbprwIhWQQ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OAbprwIhWQQ youtube]
  • I would like to see this film, while I want to know if Keanu it can. I think he's a good and underweightet actor.
  • tia
Keanu in respect to jekyll and hyde is exactly that. In alot of movies he is stoic and quiet ie: constantine, Klaatu, and Neo, but in real life he is very animated and funny. He is like jekyll and hyde. I think this is an exellent (no pun intended) role for him to prove you nay sayers that say he can't act wrong. He just has to play jekyll as Neo and hyde as himself. Easy !!!
  • why do so many people hate Keanu Reeves?!?! but anyway this is good. I love Jekyll and Hyde... awesome, classic story.
  • Sick thrilla
I agree. Don't disrespect the Keanu!
  • You'd think Keanu Reeves would be the last person to get picked for a role that demands so much versatility.

I like Keanu Reeves in certain movies but he just doesn't have enough range. I think this is a total miscast.
  • He's never played himself before. Ever. Have you seen him in real life interviews? Nothing like he is onscreen.
  • He has played himself although his name was Ted Logan.
He is actually better in interviews than when he is trying to "act"
  • He's nothing like Ted. For starters, IQ of 160.

When asked which of his characters was most like him, Keanu picked Matt from River's Edge.
  • From when I read it a long time ago, I think I remember something like that as well. As long as the two actors were similar (I mean, they ARE the same person so some similarities have to be drawn), I think it would work. Isn't the Dr. Parnassus movie going the route of different actors for the same character? I don't know if they all look alike or how that will play out but if that turns out well, why wouldn't it work for this too?
  • I think Keanu will do fine. The roles he's taken (Neo, that alien guy) call for monotonicity, and Speed was... well it was what it was. Which was awesome.

It's nice to see someone get this right. It seems every time Jekyll and Hide are mentioned most people think he morphs into a ginormous beast. He doesn't, Jekyll is actually smaller and frailer than Hide in Stevenson's original story. But he is pretty damned evil.
  • John Guard
i , like dude, i am Dr Jekyll, i am totally awesome.
but when i , like change , you know, into Mr. Hyde
    dudes!!!!!! i am totally henious!!!!!
  • He can barely play one character in a film, and some thinks he can play two separate identities?
I think Edward Norton would be the better choice for this role.
  • How does Reeves keep getting work? I want his agent. He's a mediocre actor with little range and no real presence.
  • His agent is Kevin Huvane, often the most thanked guy at the Oscars.
  • thomas040
Well, they call it JEKYL and nothing else. Maybe it doesn't need as much diversity as we think:)
  • Norma
You can do it Keanu ! I believe in you .
  • michi
Reeves has some big Jekyll/Hyde shoes to fill (Spencer Tracy, Fredric March, Jack Palance, John Barrymore). I just don't think he can do it.

As for the idea of two different actors...why do that? If nearly every other GOOD adaption of such a great story had the actors playing both roles (even Jason in LXG managed to work in that huge suit to play both parts) then why should Reeves not be expected to do the same?

I'm not happy about this one bit.
  • Lauren
I see Keanu more of a Hyde type. But who knows, Jekyll would be a interesting role for him. I'm very excited about this. Is this going to be a musical version? But does anyone else agree with me, that Keanu could be Hyde?
