Alice in Wonderland 3D Concept Art

I really need to invest in a good scanner because I saw these pictures in Total Film before the weekend and have spent until now scouring the internet for them. What’s up, page pirates? Not got a subscription?

The first image, as seen above, is a piece of concept art for Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. As it is doubtful that the dimensionalisation was done by anybody working on the film and instead probably knocked out by a promotions or design company purists might want to just filter this down to clean 2D by looking at it through anaglyphic specs with one eye closed.

After the break is the second image, a still from Pixar’s Up. Again, the 3D effect in evidence is of dubious provenance but, hey, if you’ve got a pair of those crummy old red-blue glasses to hand, you deserve a bit of fun.

Here are Carl, Russel, Dug and Kevin, comin ‘atcha.

This kind of PR for 3D movies is definitely well meaning, letting customers in on the 3D excitement, but I suspect it might just do a little damage to the public perception of modern stereo cinema. Of course, there’s no way to replicate the means of Real D projection on a paper page, but who know what Kindle 9 is going to be capable of, eh?

Total Film quite sweetly call this “the most exciting year in the history of cinema” there on the Up pic. How cute. I would agree that the high watermark of quality in filmmaking is, overall, going higher and higher as the years clock by but I’m not sure 2009 is as exciting as 2008 overall.

I found the images at the Marketsaw blog, where they also reproduce an Avatar picture from the magazine while, at the same time, repudiating its verity. They have previously denounced the image as fan created and only include it now out of their completist urges.

If you go out and buy a copy of Total Film, not only will you have much more red-blue headachey fun coming your way, you’ll also be able to hear the pages turn, feel their slickness, smell the binding and taste the ink.

  • These pictures give me a headache. If only my stolen RealD glasses worked...ugh.

cool concept though, I love how they intertwined red and blue into it, to give that real "3d" feel :|

I don't want to be a stereotypical negative-blog-commenter, but i miss the days when Peter was doing the heavy-blog-lifting on slashfilm. I don't want to mess with your hobby, Brendon Connelly, but you're blog posts are more for yourself than for slashfilms readers. way too many failed attempts at sarcasm, and your opinion-heavy posts leave me wondering why I read them. Keep it simple please. I read the blog for movie news, not for anecdotes that are trying too hard. Thanks.
  • Does anyone here actually like Brendon's posts or is it just me?
  • there's no need to gang up on Brendon. I enjoy reading his articles.

    @ Tercotta

No, you're not alone. Brendon's posts are shit. Maybe it's his British smugginess coming through or something. I generally skip his articles now, but I was drawn in by the 3D picture, read the first few lines, and felt compelled to say something. Looks like you guys beat me to it.
  • No as in am I th only one that likes his posts. He has awesome news to bring up. And I can deal with a little smug because it's a blog not Variety.

  • The 3d image of Alice looks very Tim Burton-ish. By that I mean it's a good thing. Too bad the 3d image of AVATAR is just fan art.
  • yeah, I don't see how these pictures are exciting if you don't have a pair of 3-D glasses on hand. How will they release Alice on DVD AFTER the 3-D cinema release is over? Will they retain the 3-D effects on DVD or make it look normal?
  • Both - but it will only be anaglyph 3D at first. See the recent 3D dvd releases (My Bloody valentine for one) to get an idea.
  • heh, that remake was terrible, I saw it in the cinema. I DON'T want to see it again on dvd.. lol

I hate old fashion 3D it hurts my eyes. I remember watching the John Wayne film Hondo 20 yrs ago on TV. Oh man was that a mistake. My eyes were screwed up for years. Anytime I saw red next to blue, the red was so bright I could not look at it. My eyes finally recovered but I have not forgotten what has happened.

    What's next after 3-D? Holograms? Won't that just be a stage-play?
In order for "3-D" to work, you have to render/animate and record/project at a really high resolution. It'd be nice to see into the future and know whether this 3-D movement is actually going to work.
  • i actually tried them with my red-blue glasses and the Alice picture is not 3D (oh and the quality is shit too) but again, thanks for sharing
  • wha?
chill out count drakus. i happen to like brendon's posts. so there.
  • Can't wait for 2013 when we're looking back and laughing at how we thought 3D would take off again...
  • I like Brendon's posts, hell I even look for them through the first page
