Over the last year, many names have been batted around for the title role in The Green Lantern, including Star Trek’s Chris Pine and dorm-poster staple Ryan Gosling. According to a very confident-sounding Drew at HitFix, actor Bradley Cooper is now closer than any other dude to being a lock for the DC superhero and planned film franchise.

Those who pay attention to summer-buzz know that Cooper is lined-up for a breakout performance in June’s The Hangover, an R-rated comedy from Todd Phillips that is testing through the friggin’ roof. We’ve been predicting major things for the film for months. Moreover, a sequel has already been greenlit, which is quite rare for the genre. In the past, Cooper has done a lot of TV work (Alias, Kitchen Confidential, Nip/Tuck) and appeared in films like Yes Man. He’s a likable actor who seems geared for bigger “everyman”-type roles. But is he the ideal choice to play Hal Jordan? Commenters, mount up.

After Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) signed on to direct, Warner Bros. announced a $150 million budget for The Green Lantern, with shooting still set for July in Sydney, Australia. It’s obviously a decisive step for DC/WB coming off The Dark Knight, and it’ll be interesting to see how “serious” they go. With a face that will soon be more associated with comedy than action, we’ll be sure to update if Cooper becomes officially attached.

  • Dear God No!
  • Bill... Zebub. (Ow!) Billzebub. Billzebub. (Ow!)

All I can say is MAYBE. because I've complained about stuff like this before only to be proven really, really wrong (Heath, RDJ).
  • Robo
    He's a good actor. I'd give him a chance.
  • Lencho
Seems more like Guy to me.
  • George Eads should play Hal Jordan
  • filmkid
George Eads looks more like Captain America
  • the sac as the green latern? i can see it.
  • Justin
He's more of a comedic actor than I'd like for Hal Jordan. David Boreanaz or Nathan Fillion would be ideal choices for Hal to me because they're both great with sarcastic characters, but the problem there would be that either one might be a bit old for where it is in the character's life.
  • Check him out in Midnight Meat Train. Only roll I've seen him in that isn't comedic, but I think he has the chops to pull of a more serious role...

I like Cooper though, more than a few of the other rumored castings
  • Red Frenzy
Every movie I've ever seen this guy in he plays a douche bag. Not that he is a bad actor, he just has that douche bag look to him. The last thing I want is to finally see the long awaited Green Lantern movie and think to myself, "Man GL is a total douche bag."
  • gah
yeah that is actually really true. however, i think it may be due to typecasting and maybe this will give him a chance to stretch his abilities.
  • but hal kinda of is a douche bag. i mean, he's a super hero and he saves peoples lives and what not, but he's a ridiculously arrogant test pilot. i think this guy could come off as having cockiness and swagger, without being an obnoxious frat boy with super powers. i agree it could go wrong with too much douche in the mix, chris evans as johhny storm for example...
  • I get the douchebag vibe too.
  • gah
"DC/WB coming off The Dark Knight, and it’ll be interesting to see how “serious” they go"
Expect it to have a similar tone to the Star Wars films or Iron Man.
  • gah
no, Sean William Scott IS Guy Gardner. Maybe Dennis Leary if he was younger.

Why not give Common the Green Lantern role as originally planned?
  • Sidewalkgod
Hal Jordan was a distinquished man that went insane and became the murderer of the Corps and a huge villian. Don't see it with this guy. I do see Guy Gardner tho. I thought George Clooney would be a good pick. Look at Hal Jordan in the comics and then George.....
  • mangos
i can tell you're updated on the current events in green lantern.
  • gregt
That guy is a movie star. He's had this coming.
  • Wow I was just watching 'Wedding Crashers' and he was such a tool...but hey I really don't know squat bout GL, other than the ring, Justice League, and I always thought he was suppose to be a black dude, but other than that more power to Cooper I just hope whoever gets the part does a great job...
  • jason B
yer thinking of john stewart, he was earths 3rd ( i think ) green lantern, and trust me when i say thank god they are going with the hal jordan origin. it would have been a slap in the face not to.
  • I have faith in Martin Campbell, his choices for leading man in his previous movies were good if not great. And isn't Hal Jordan suppose to be a pilot? Pilots are cocky and this guy look the part. So I'll be down with Martin Campbell's decision, whatever it may be.
  • Noooo! Bradley Cooper reminds me of a cheap creepier version of Josh Lucas. I don't know but for some reason I just don't like watching him in movies.
  • Yeah, looks like too much of a douche bag for me
  • dannyboy
hal jordan was an douche bag in the comics
  • this guy wins
not that it has ANYTHING whatsoever to do with him being a good fit or not, but my ex girlfriend hates this dude. he looks just like her ex before me i guess, never met the dude. so on the basis that my enemies' enemy is my true friend; i hope he gets the part and it's the most successful movie of all time

    :)
  • Mel
I really like him, he's a great actor who has never really gotten huge roles. Could be great for this one.
  • Ben
Personally, i think he's a little bit too creepy looking. I can buy him following Vinny Jones on the subway and taking secret pics of people but not playing Hal Jordan. Would love to be proven wrong though.
  • Shouldn't Green Lantern be black? That's how I remember him from the Justice League cartoon show.
  • Kyle Rayner
The original GL (Hal Jordan) is white.
  • I'd give Bradley Cooper a chance, he looks right physically and Green Lantern has a great creative team especially with Casino Royale Director Martin Campbell. I am not saying he isn't a "Casting Coup" but I am not saying he is a "Horrible" decision.
  • jason B
i wasn't even thinking in that direction, but i just know that cooper has chops we haven't even seen yet. i'm on board 100%...now i'm just curious to see the style & look of the costumes, AND if they have the balls to keep sinestro purple.
  • HoorayForPancakes
it could be worse. it could be Nathan Fillion (still dont get the fascination w/ that guy. hes a C-list actor who has never done anything worthwhile) im a huge DC and GL comic fan and i dont have a problem w/ Cooper as GL. everyone is gonna rip on him anyway just like they did Heath Ledger, Michael Keaton, Hugh Jackman, Seth Rogen etc

interesting side note, i have a friend who is a huge Marvel fan and and a man crush on Bradley Cooper. it should be interesting to see how that plays out
  • mangos
when i think of him with darker brown hair, i kinda see it. kinda.
  • I could totally see him as GL. I still was hoping for Nathan Fillion, but he has the right features and height. Oh, Anon, Common was thought for the GL role when that awful Justice League movie option was being tossed around.
  • Saw him in "The Midnight Meat Train" I thought he did pretty well actually but I'm not getting a Hal Jordan vibe from him at all.

But if the studio along with the director believe its the right move then they should go ahead with the casting.

Although I'd personally prefer someone else.
  • nathandetroit
I don't think I like it... but I could be wrong. I think that casting is going to largely depend on the story. If it has a more serious tone.. I think I would like a more serious actor.. but if they are trying to take it in lighter direction... this guy could work. I'll keeo my fingers crossed cuz GL and Flash were always my favorites of the DC group.
  • All my friends know that I love Bradley Cooper. He would be my future ex-husband. I just don't see it happening.

On another board, people were throwing around Sam Witwer from Smallville, BAG from Sarah Conner, Chris Pine, Ryan Gosling.

I would want to see Sam as Hal Jordan.
  • Let's see:
I'd say he has the physique, he's blond and a good star with potential for lead roles. Although I would have preferred the John Stewart version of Green Lantern but I can see the studios using that for the sequels. And what about my dream to have Will Smith or Denzel Washington as John Stewart?
  • Fool4Songs
I've wanted to see a GL movie for about 10 years now. I just hope they do it right and not mess it up like so many others.
  • Fool4Songs
I just hope they make the movie right and not mess up like all the others
  • yoyobaby
no way!! he is not good looking and is one noted. way to go CAA to promote this guy who would throw his wife under the bus to get ahead (ask jennifer).
  • yoyobaby
/excuse me ex wife because she is D list and he is on his way to A list!!
  • tootalufilms
i love bradley cooper i see him more as guy gardner then hal tho
  • I really don't see this guy as Green Lantern. He seems to be a supporting character, kinda like that's all he should ever be offered. I was hoping WB would try to go after a bigger name than this. I guess someone could make the argument that Christian Bale wasn't that big of a name when he was cast as Bruce Wayne. If they decide to go with Cooper, they should surround him with endless talent like they did with Bale in Batman Begins.

Just give the role to Common....is that so hard?
