Wolverine in Japan

Variety has confirmed that Hugh Jackman is already developing a sequel to X-Men Origins: Wolverine. This comes as no surprise, especially considering the film grossed over $158 million worldwide on opening weekend. No writer has been hired but the sequel is expected the focus on the Logan in Japan samurai storyline from the comic book series. The storyline was also hinted at in one of the film’s after-credits easter egg endings which showed Logan drinking in a Japanese bar. Seed Productions is producing with Jackman, who would also star again as Wolverine.

It makes sense that Jackman wants to explore Wolverine’s Japanese saga, because it would truly bring a superhero story someplace we haven’t seen before on the big screen. Jackman is enthusiastic of seeing his “anarchic character, the outsider, being in this world — I can see it aesthetically, too — full of honor and tradition and customs and someone who’s really anti-all of that, and trying to negotiate his way.” And lets not forget the Samurai fights.

Slumdog Millionaire screenwriter Simon Beaufoy had mentioned during an appearance at the Bradford International Film Festival that he had been approached to pen a second film, but no deal was reportedly made. Jackman also recently confessed to MTV that he’s been talking to writers about a storyline for the second film, although it was never made clear who these writers were.

  • I guess this is good news since I'm technically still a fan. I just hope they at least try to get the next one right. The first one just wasn't what I expected in a Wolverine movie.
  • Maybe Singer will come back and do The Deadpool Film.
  • I really didn't think that Wolverine was that bad. I agree that a true origins story of wolverine would have been rated R. I'm not going to complain about it being PG-13 or that Wolverine is a more "tame" version of himself now. I think the movie was good, but obviously could have been better. Isn't that true with a lot of movies?
  • Thankfully this get's everyone off of our Pirate asses.

I'm looking forward to a leaked sequel. The fact that they are free makes the pain more tolerable.
  • Oh boy.

Yes, because we want to keep seeing Wolverine turn progressively tamer. Hugh did a great job in X1 and X2 but after that (X3 and Origins) he was turned into the guy who stands around and looks worried and doesn't attack unless provoked (this isn't Wolverine at all).

Not only that but XO: W lacked everything a good Wolverine origins film should have had. Violence, R rating, Wolverine actually doing animalistic acts.

These films are steadily going down in quality and thinking this next Wolverine film will be any better just needs to take a look at Fox's record.
  • I don't think they could have given him animalistic acts. I don't think the audience could have related with that and it would not have fit into the series as a whole because Logan rarely acts animalish in the first three movies.

They did show Victor (btw, I was incredibly happy with Schreiber's performance) progressively becoming more and more of an animal. The first couple of wars he acted like a normal human and then at the D-Day scene, he started running on all four limbs. And he gradually gained more animal instincts through the rest of the film. Then in the first film, you see that his animal side has almost completely overtaken him. (btw... did they ever show his healing ability in the first film? If they did... I don't remember it)

I saw the opening for the video game and it seems that was the film we should've gotten instead. Going have to check it out. Might be the best video game based on a film.
  • Geist
The game is prolly one of the best games based off a film even though it has it's flaws it's pretty good. I got it last week. Beat 3 times in 4 days. Not much else to do and very repetitive but very bloody and gorey which is why it's fun.
  • sweet, this should be good. Wolverine in Japan is going to be awesome.
  • Cat
Please no Fox! Tell me it's not fox.

    Devils Advocate here,
Hello couch jockeys. As I have said before as with The Iron Man and Speed Racer critique(which was not really a critique since none of you are critics)..DO BETTER!!!Get your camcorders, crayons,Polaroids get off your 'roids, get the rest of your friends,druids,drones,followers,in-bred cousins or whatever and do better. You have the tools, get some ambition, quit bitchin' and do better.Put up or S!T!F!U!
    Devil out.
(Excuse my rant ,I am taking medication. It's not "prescribed" by a "doctor",but it is medication.)
  • The real reason Jackman wants to do another is because he realizes just how BAD the current one is, and wants to make up for it!!

All kidding aside, aren't most "seconds" usually better than "firsts" or even "thirds?"

I say they get Michael Bay to direct!!
  • james
    Well, im excited.

You all forget, its a FOX movie. Until that changes its not going to b up to par.

As long as Jackman is Wolverine ill still support him through thick n thin

I wont be a hater for the sake of hating. I enjoyed this film even with its flaws and thats all you can do when you have bigots for a studio
  • Solid
agreed. We're in the post-dark knight era when anything that doesn't have bale in it is automatically inferior. Sure grumbling batman was great, but today's boys need heros who speak clearly too. And well, I'm all for anything that's better than that trash x3. So Yeah! Give me a sequel!
  • Jeff W.
I thought Wolverine was terrific fun and I'm delighted to hear that there will be a sequel. I'm so tired of whining fanboys decrying this popcorn flick. This isn't Shakespeare, it's just silly comic book fun, lighten the fuck up.
  • Jimmy Monopoly
Oh ya, they're so going to ruin Claremont & Miller's Wolverine. After X3 & Wolvie, when I think of Hugh Jackman & FOX, I think of them as the parents who have iPhones & use the word bling bling around their kids trying to impress them with their so called "acute" knowledge of whats hip.. only inciting absolute embarrassment at the mere attempt instead.
  • Greggory Basore
Whiny bastards the lot of ya/

First off, Wolverine was a fun movie no two ways about it. Second of all I want to see more. Third of all the movie's come out and made a grip of money so you'll have to go spread your vitriolic poison elsewhere... like that new Star Trek movie coming out. Finally I have to say that most of the people hating on the Wolverine movie seem to want to hate on it for little or no reason than being haters.

Let go of excess hate... it'll get you nowhere.
  • Why not just Animated short stories based on some of the best Wolverine comics? Something like Animatrix.
  • Debaser
Wolverine with Mariko, Yukio, Silver Samurai, Shingen, the Yakuza, and The Hand!!!

    Can't wait!!!
  • jimbo17
aside from the 20 year layoff, they're doing the same thing george lucas did, so this is more like episode 2 of the star wars saga. It's telling the story before x-men and I wouldn't mind seeing him falling in love with a jap chick (mariko) and fighting the silver samarai!
  • lux
Fuck it! If they make a sequel I'll do piracy!
  • binaryshock
Pirate all you want, cause we saw with this film Piracy = good or atleast a non-factor lol
  • there's an alright movie buried deep somewhere in the first wolverine. if you cut out all the cast of characters that don't get developed, and focus primarily on wolverine's relationship with sabertooth, then i think that story really could have worked.

if they actually try to tell a good wolverine story instead of using wolverine as a launching pad for 3 other franchise spin offs, then i still have hopes that even fox could make a decent wolverine movie.

i also believe that santa clause and the easter bunny are good friends, and that any day now natalie portman is going to come knocking on my front door and demand that we make out for like 3 hours.
  • "it would truly bring a superhero story someplace we haven’t seen before on the big screen"
Didn't Batman Begins spend like its first hour doing basically the same thing?
  • Yes and No, at that point in the story, Bruce Wayne wasn't yet Batman, he was just Bruce Wayne. It was more of an origin story. I was more speaking to a fish out of water superhero story
  • The more I think about it, the "fish out of water" aspect was definitely an important part of that sequence in Batman Begins, even though, as you point out, it was the journey of *becoming* a superhero, not a journey taken *as* a superhero. Still, hopefully the Wolverine 2 writers will take care to make sure they don't retread already-trodden ground.
  • Good point. I stand corrected.
  • Boring
    I
I wonder if Fox is still looking for the person who leaked the film. Or did they leak it themselves- Great publicity if they did. Bring on the Harry Potter and Terminator workprints. Or I'll just watch the dailies of Inception when it starts shooting
  • The Last Samurai 2: Syonara... bub
  • ziggi
    im done with wolverine.
5 generic barfs! out of 5 generic barfs!
  • gah
A good director and a good writer could turn this around. The last film was HORRIBLE but I still think Jackman makes a good Wolverine when he's in the right hands.
  • oh man. no. Hugh! I used to like you, what happened?
  • Palmer
    Oh god no.
  • bob
wolverine doing animalistic acts? like fucking sabertooth doggy style? haha. a studio is never going to make an R superhero film. with pg 13 they can get away with a lot of over the top violence and still get a shit load of people to go see it.
  • starscream9289
Hugh is becoming TOO attached to this character.
  • Jdon421
Maybe in the sequel they can try and NOT make his claws look incredibly fake. Seriously, you spend that much money on a big budget special effects action blockbuster and you get stingy/sloppy with perhaps the most important element of the entire movie. lol.
  • Geist
Yeah seriously, but aside from crappy effects, NO FUCKING BLOOD?!? Not even blood coming down his hands?! Seriously, he can heal but he still bleeds, and blood still comes out depending on the wounds. As well as the ppl he kills. I mean how about when Wade killed those guys? there was no blood on the damn swords!!!! Or when Stryker killed the General, and he's cleaning the sword, again, NO BLOOD!
  • jimbo17
no shit! i thought i was watching roger rabbit with his balloon claws!!!
  • twstdbydsn
    why god, why!!!!!!!
  • I haven't seen Wolverine but friends I agree with have given me a rundown of its terribleness thus relegating it to rental status. Though this is still good news. Jackman is no idiot, he knows this movie is no good. Yet he loves this character so much he will play him as much as possible. This love of his character will only lead to good things overall in the long run.
  • BamaJuice
I agree with you on that. It's obvious he does love the character and basically you pretty much summed up my exact thoughts there. :D
  • Second time's the charm? It's worked for others...
  • Yeah and that was X2: X-Men United.

This next Wolverine film would be the fifth installment to a movie franchise that has slowly been dwindling into the realms of mediocrity.
  • True. But hopefully Jackman--in his position as producer--will take note of the problems with Wolverine and somehow improve/fix his product... Not saying it'll be X2, Spiderman 2, The Dark Knight, ect, but wishful thinking would assume a second installment couldn't be worse.

Or maybe it will be... :-/
  • marz
u mean there were two easter eggs after the credits? i saw the one where they stopped stryker and told him he was going to be questioned..but i dont remember one where wolverine is sitting in a japanese bar.guess i shoulda stuck around a lil longer.
  • Yeah, you had to wait until -after- the credits to see one of two endings. I saw the one where Deadpool reaches out of the rubble, grabs his severed head which comes to life the second he touches it.
  • Laura
yea you had to wait until the end of the credits to see the one in the japenese bar....
  • mav
ugh... i wish singer would come back and clean house
  • I also wish Singer's return to this. Hopefully the stars will align yet again and we will get a quality X-men movie and he can let someone else helm the directing responsibilities of the next Superman.
