Christina Aguilera Cast in Burlesque

Christina Aguilera has signed on to make her live-action big screen debut in Steven Antin’s contemporary musical Burlesque for Screen Gems. Antin wrote the script, which was later revised by Erin Brockovich scribe Susannah Grant. No mention is made of Diablo Cody’s screenplay involvement in the Variety story, which makes me wonder if any of her contributions have made it to the final draft.  Aguilera will play “an ambitious small-town girl with a big voice” who tries to escape a hollow past by performing in a neo-burlesque club in Los Angeles. The film hopes to be Moulin Rouge meets Cabaret, with established songs that will be updated and worked into dance numbers.

Antin has described neo-burlesque as “a contemporary take on the traditional burlesque that derived from vaudeville, with singing, dancing, comedy and more tease than striptease.” Antin’s sister Robin created the burlesque troupe The Pussycat Dolls in 1995. Burlesque is aiming to begin production in January 2010.

  • Good for her. I guess that Lady Marmalade work paid off.
  • well, it can't be any worse than Glitter, right?
  • Why does this sound like showgirls to me?
  • oh my god. This is going to be a flop. and Aquilera looks like a tranny, always wearing 10 layers of make-up.

I've been waiting for a follow up to 2004 SNL. Christina's a workaholic, she'll bring it. Haters better watch out.
  • I'm always weary of the movie-starring-a-famous-pop-singer... they often forget that just casting a famous pop star doesn't necessarily make it any better. Usually quite the opposite.

Aguilera is not just a 'pop-star' she is extremely(!) talented and will rock this show. If it were some of the other pop singers out there, I might agree but Aguilera is brilliant.
  • We've never seen her act so this remains to be seen. No matter how talented, she is still a pop star and they don't have good track records when it comes to films. Sure she can write a song and belt out a tune, but act? We'll see... but you can appreciate my doubts, no?

yes we have seen how she acts, have you ever seen her on SNL? she did like 10 episodes on that, shes hilarious!

Pussycat dolls is NOT neo-burlesque. Neo-burlesque is Margaret Cho's "the Sensuous Woman," the now passed "Velvet Hammer" and the myriad performers and producers working their collective (and very nice) asses off in clubs from Atlanta to Yorkshire. A film about the current burlesque scene would be less like "Moulin Rouge meets Cabaret" and more like "The Wrestler," albeit with more swarovski crystals. This is literally like saying, "The Jonas Brothers will be starring in a Beatles bio-pic."

But I suppose it wouldn't be Hollywood if they didn't do it all wrong.
  • Are we sure it is not called "Showgirls 2"?

Wow! I must say I may actually want to see this movie. Christina is one of the few musicians who doesn't put her/his shit aside the first time a role drops in her/his lap. Plus Christina actually has conviction and work ethics. Will look forward to seeing how she does in this project.

Christina looks like a very old slut...but,she's still very FINE!

Christina is gifted with a phenomenal voice. I feel she is without a doubt the greatest singer of her generation......and beyond. I hope that one day.....perhaps after acquiring greater wisdom and maturity....she'll realize she is already naturally a powerful woman, and needs no ultra-sexy costumes or mega fanfare to deliver her music. She only needs to stand up.....and sing! She is naturally beautiful, and no matter what she wears, her incredible vocal style will continue to mesmerize and fill with joy, the hearts of her beloved fans and loyal listeners. Let's give the movie a chance.
  • Wow I like her song.
