Blood: The Last Vampire was a significant anime milestone for two reasons; one, because it was one of the first anime films produced for an English voice track (a move that was directly aimed at making it more palatable for overseas markets), but also, because it was one of the first anime features to be completely digitally animated. There was little surprise when an English live action remake was announced, and given that the original film was more an exercise in style than an anime classic, it’s also not the sort of thing that diehard fans would nitpick too much. This was a remake practically begging to be made.

Brendon’s already given us a first look at the remake when he covered the first Japanese trailer a few months ago, but now we have a few status updates on the project. First is the unsurprising news that the film’s North American rights have been picked up by Sony, with U.S. theatrical distribution this summer by Samuel Goldwyn Films.

Also, I came across a newer trailer for the film on Japanator that makes me all sorts of excited for this project.

Judging by the dialog, this film won’t end up winning any awards for writing—but for loads of vampire ass-kicking, definitely. I’m loving the style of the film, and anything with Corey Yuen choreogaphy is worth at least one viewing in my opinion. Director Chris Nahon was responsible for one of the few entertaining English Jet Li films with Kiss of the Dragon, and I’ve also heard good things about his sophomore effort Empire of the Wolves. I’m getting a huge Blade 2 meets Azumi vibe from this film, which is a big plus for me.

Discuss: Is this trailer working for you as much as it does for me? Does it seem oddly fitting that they cast Gianna Jun from My Sassy Girl as Saya?

there's a trailer for this on the new underworld dvd. it's red band and I have no idea why.
  • Corey Yuen can't do wrong. And I did enjoy Chris Nahon's direction on Kiss of the Dragon. So this should be a good action movie to watch.
  • That looked really cool. I wasn't much of a fan of the original animated movie but this looks like it could be a lot of fun. Not to mention that right now there is a serious lack of swordplay movies out right now. No body makes enough fight movies that concentrate on bladed weapons.
  • I'm confused. Is this film Japanese? Chinese? Korean? American? Anyway it looks pretty fun. Will definitely be a great time. Although Gianna Jun is a bit too pretty for the role and it could really have done without the engrish.
  • it's made I believe by a Hong Kong studio...helmed by a French director....yet it's an English language production...a majority of the actors are American or British...
  • ...still just as confused.
  • Happy_Evil_Dude
Actually none of those, it's a French film. Though if you want to get technical there's also a bit of Chinese (and possibly Japanese) money in there, but it's mainly a French production.
  • The anime holds a special place in my heart because its set in Yokota Air Base which is where I graduated high school.
  • Weyland_Yutani
Looks like some sweet live anime. I like the look of the film
  • There already was a further study on Blood: The Last Vampire. It was called Blood+. Both were concocted by Production I.G. and Aniplex. It should be said, however, that it was more an alternate take on the original design.

This trailer appears to be decidedly less subtle and lacking in the depth the series (or the original movie) had the time to explore. I wouldn't turn down a viewing. Both missing the weight to chew on and applauding more swords cutting demons in tween.

I enjoyed the anime even though it was not as long as the box said it should have been. I enjoyed the show a little as well so I'll be seeing this movie. Does look pretty good and a nice entry into the huge vampire genre.
  • Bob Funn
Its 'Brotherhood of the Wolf" isn't it? anyway I have been waiting for this for a long time and I'm ecstatic its being picked up by Sony.

Also look for the behind the scenes clip on youtube, this girl got beat up making this movie, I'm really impressed with how hard she worked for this. Also she really stabs a guy in the face.
  • Antihero
The wire work looks really bad in this.
  • The
I think it's on purpose. It seems more of a Crouching Tiger meets Blood: The Last Vampire instead of just a pure adaption, fighting and all.
  • Emipre of The Wolves was such a prize when I found it...something I didn't expect, at moments far superior the already kick-ass Kiss of the Dragon...I can't wait to see what Chris Nahon can deliver this time action-wise...this man knows how to make interesting and entertaining action films

Actually, l'Empire des Loups (Empire of the Wolves) was a huge piece of shit, unanimously hated over here in France, and for good reasons...
  • DannyBoy
Well, it'll probably be a turd of a movie. But Freddy Vs Jason was pretty ordinary as well and Corey Yuen still managed to throw some cool stuff in there. The original anime was boring as shit for me, but Jeun Ji-Hyun is fabulous so I'll probably see it in theatres.
  • eh...
  • Looking fwd for it!
... and I thought I saw kate beckinsale somewhere in that trailer.
  • Rule #1: Never ever make a real-life adaption of an anime. It NEVER worked before, it never will.
  • I thought this is a serial not a movie?
  • Eric R.
    I'm in.
  • a part of me just died from the excitement. This looks excellent!
  • Rob
I enjoyed the anime when it came out, tho I feel it's become hugely overrated for what it was. Wasn't too fussed by the first teaser for the live action version... but this is a little more encouraging. Looks like good fun & spectacle, if nothing else.
  • The
I agree about the overrated hype that Blood got. It was extremely short, something like 45 minutes which really did seem to be just an attempt at experimenting with computers and anime. I only caught a little bit of the tv show, but it looked pretty shitty nonetheless.
  • I liked Blood+, but you'd be hard pressed to find much depth in the original Blood's 50 min runtime.
  • Empire of the Wolf is a crime film starring Jean Reno, Brotherhood of the Wolf is an earlier film helmed by Christophe Gans (who went on to make Silent Hill).
  • I think it could be a fun movie to watch. At least, that's what I get from the trailer.
  • You don't think with the rise of digital effects that a *good* live action anime adaptation could happen? I would argue that Ryuhei Kitamura's Azumi was a pretty successful adaptation (that didn't need to rely on special effects), and Casshern was a good looking adaptation only hampered by a terrible script. I think even Speed Racer could count as a good adaptation that successfully recaptured the campy tone of the original, while still being entertaining.

Hell, technically OIdboy was an adaptation of a manga :P
  • Thrillhouse
Cute Asian girl = me watching
  • GregoryV
Sony!? It'll never get a proper release judging by their past foreign releases.
  • BLOOD_FAN
The music was really cliche, but it didn't take away from the general awesomeness. Put this in theaters and I will be waiting in line.
  • Yeah, same here.
  • Cody
I think I've already seen this one... No wait, that was in Russian...
  • Mikecrazy
I'm a fan of blood but not the biggest fan. This looks good I want to see it. Hopefully this can make up for what dragon ball did to anime to real live action movies.
