Dimension Films and 2929 Productions have finally announced that they will be releasing John Hillcoat’s adaptation of the Cormac McCarthy novel The Road, on October 16th 2009.

The film was originally set to debut during the 2008 Oscar season, but was supposedly pulled due to visual effects issues. Many speculated that the Weinsteins were starting to doubt the dark film’s award potential. Many had expected the film to be dumped in the first quarter dumping ground, but an October release shows that the studio still has some confidence in potential award consideration.

Academy Award nominee Viggo Mortensen, Academy Award winners Robert Duvall and Charlize Theron, Guy Pearce and 12-year-old Kodi Smit McPhee star in the the story of a man (Mortensen) and his young son (Smit-McPhee) traveling through a desperate, post-apocalyptic world. The flap jacket on the book describes the setting as “burned America”.

“Nothing moves in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind. It is cold enough to crack stones, and when the snow falls it is gray. The sky is dark.”

“Their destination is the coast, although they don’t know what, if anything, awaits them there.”

“They have nothing; just a pistol to defend themselves against the lawless bands that stalk the road, the clothes they are wearing, a cart of scavenged food—and each other.”

looks rather depressing but i think i'd go see it. kinda reminds me of fallout 3.
  • Bull
Please don't compare Cormac McCarthy's "The Road" to a fucking video game. Thanks.
  • joe
haha. alright man. i've never read it or anything but i guess i might check it since you've gotten all defensive about it. fallout 3 was a pretty good game though.
  • You're right on Joe. The designers of Fallout 3 took some inspiration from The Road.
  • Xono
Fallout pre-dates "The Road" by quite a margin as some seem to forget there were two games in the nineties before the mediocre Fallout 3 whos makers had nothing to do with originals (they bought the IP). Fallout itself is was inspired by the Wasteland game from the late 80's.

Comparisons to The Road and Fallout or even Mad Max are pretty flimsy aside from the post apocalyptic setting, Fallout is set in an alternate reality were the 50's visions of the future came true & then everything was nuked.
  • Please don't be a douche bag. Thanks.
  • Bullio
Eat a dick and go back to your game boy. Thanks.

    Thank you bull.
  • jaq
ya it does remind me of Fallout
  • The movie looks great, lets see how many awards it will get.

Same day as Where The Wild Things Are. That is a hard decision.
  • shadow
That's going to be one hell of a weekend.
  • Seriously, shit. Double feature that day.
  • Peter
I'd agree with the double feature if the two weren't so amazingly different. I don't know if I could get all depressed from this movie then try to jump in to Wild Things or vice versa. Audiences are going to be split that day, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say Wild Things will come out on top.
  • You bring up a good point. I think Wild Things has the advantage of being more 'accessible', and since I'm sure children will bring their parents along. I think I might see The Road first. When I found out John Hillcoat was making the movie shortly after I read the book, I knew it'd be an awesome movie to look at. Hopefully he'll be able to translate the isolation and the atmosphere as well.
  • Setting aside cash for a double feature that day ;-)
Start off with The Road and follow it up with Where the Wild Things Are and you'll have a wonderful roller coaster of emotions, ending on warm fuzzies. Updating my calendar after I type.

Duregg...you need to 'set aside' money for a double feature???....and for films that are more than a month away?
Might wanna ask for a raise....or probably more accurate...an increase in your allowance. Now, go mow the yard.

Two well crafted films in just one day? I must be dreaming...
  • Wow I remeber seeing a preview for this a long time ago, I forgot the title and everything but kept on wondering what it was about, when its coming out etc. Now that I know the title I mifght read the book too.

Still a long wait, but at least it's finally coming out.
  • Kind of reminds me of "Children of Men". Hopefully this is as good if not better. Viggo Mortensen usually picks good flicks to work in. Hope this won't be any different.

Someone mentioned its the same weekend as "Where The Wild Things Are". Somehow I'm just not feeling whatever material has been released. Yes, the book is beloved by millions but a studio tampering with a directors vision, one that probably wouldn't go down well with mainstream audiences, doesn't sound like a good experience. Ofcourse I would have no way of knowing until I actually get a catch to view it.

But given how little I know about both movies this would most likely be my first pick.

actually the studio tried to make him change it, additional producers supported the project and the film remains as Spike Jones wanted it.
  • Oh christ, finally! I've been waiting for this movie ever since I read the book.

Like Palmer said, little bit of a wait...but it'll be worth it.
  • im excited. could take or leave Charlize Theron though.
  • i swear, this film looks so amazing.
  • Peter have you read The Road? It's a pretty fantastic book.
  • Book is awesome and I've heard the footage they've shown around is awesome. Can't wait!!!
  • Children of Men changed from the novel so its not always a bad thing. If like you say its the directors vision rather than studio pressure to "make things more commercial".
  • WHERE IS A TRAILER!!!!!????!?!!
  • This looks very intresting, i think i might go read the book!
  • It's a great book, I would recommend you go read it as soon as you can.
  • Yes. Do. It's amazing.
  • This is one of my most anticipated of 09. So I guess it'll have some award buzz since it's coming out in October.

I can only pray that this is released near me.
  • Brad
I think the kid is way too old. He should have been 7 or 8... 9, tops. I read that the kid is a really fantastic actor though so maybe that will balance out my issues with his age.
  • The only reason is got bumped form last year is Weinstein Co. realized they could polish the turd that was "The Reader" and get some Oscar noms. Since almost everything Weinstein puts out is garbage, they bumped "The Road" to this year allowing Harvey to focus on bribing people to vote for one film at a time instead of working against himself. God I hate Weinstein. But this is still great news.
  • I'm going to read this... right after I finish No Country For Old Men.
  • I actually had to read this book for my final paper. I thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to the movie.
  • Gotta love that post-apocalypse.
  • Finally! I was worrying that this movie wouldn't come out in '09. Cannot wait to see how they adapted the novel, which is, in my opinion, one of the best stories ever written.
  • Taco
If the film's true to the novel, it'll be Best Picture material imo.
  • OMAR!
  • This is great news. I am so happy this finally got a release date. I was beginning to wonder what happened and why nothing was going on with the film. I also hope that the quality of the film is good and possible for the film to win some awards.
  • i actually heard that they were going to expand the role for Charlize Theron.
  • I guess that's why there's a Saturday and a Sunday in the weekend.
  • apt33
If you haven't read this book yet, read it. All your comparisons to video games will diminish. Truly a classic and hopefully will get some sort of award recognition (ahem) if they don't release another "The Reader" this year.
  • or another slumdog that sweeps the awards again.
  • Thunkgeek
    Flap jacket?
  • I'm going to have to go get and read this book. I had forgotten about this movie after hearing about it last year and good to see it finally getting a release date.
