I wasn’t planning on doing any work over the weekend, but then I received an email from our friends at Twitch telling us to check out the official trailer for Merantau, the first Indonesian martial arts film to be produced in almost a quarter of a century. Todd Brown thinks this film “has a fighting chance of being the next Ong Bak”, and after watching the trailer, I have to agree. If you’re a fan of kick ass martial arts movie, watch the trailer now, embedded after the jump. The action doesn’t get started until about half way in, but the wait is worth it.

Official Plot Synopsis: “In Minangkabau, West Sumatera, Yuda a skilled practitioner of Silat Harimau is in the final preparations to begin his “Merantau” a century’s old rites-of-passage to be carried out by the community’s young men that will see him leave the comforts of his idyllic farming village and make a name for himself in the bustling city of Jakarta. After a series of setbacks leave Yuda homeless and uncertain about his new future, a chance encounter results in him defending the orphaned Astri from becoming the latest victim of a European human trafficking ring led by the wildly psychotic, Ratger and his right-hand man Luc. With Ratger injured in the melee and seeking both his “merchandise” and bloody retribution, Yuda’s introduction to the city is a baptism of fire as he is forced to go on the run with Astri and her younger brother Adit as all the pimps and gangsters that inhabit the night hound the streets chasing their every step. With escape seemingly beyond their grasp, Yuda has no choice but to face his attackers in an adrenaline charged, jaw-dropping finale.”

Also, check out some of the teaser posters from the movie below.

    That ending is the shit.
  • Matt
That looks awesome and I love then end of it when he impales the guy with the wooden pole.
  • RedLeader43
    Oh my! That was incredible!
  • that last shot was pretty bad ass.
  • Slash Cynic
The action and choreography looks weak. Yuda has nothing on Tony Jaa.
  • This is true.
  • Tony
lol, ur an idiot. Sure Tony Jaa is a bad ass, but this looking "weak".. Get ur eyes checked
  • it is weak. Nothing spectacular or groundbreaking here. Nothing special about the fighting. And the choreography is really boring, it's hitting one guy after another without substance.
  • haterrrr...
  • Geist
I agree, first thing I thought when I saw the fighting, the choreography wasn't fast, hard or tight enough. Still looked very rehearsed, and nothing entirely new as far as action shots. Throw in a little freerunning and still not even nearly as intense as say District B13 much less Ong Bak. Hell even not even close to Chocolate's standards. I'm not hating, it's a nice entry for Indonesia and I'll watch but it's not nearly on par as some of the others.
  • Whoa, nice!
  • film
    this looks good
  • Looks alright, i like the locations. That's it.
  • sean coates
they love the crazy trailer endings just like the flying knee by tony jaa into the guy hangin from the helicopter
  • Jason
This literally looks exactly like Ong-Bak, but i enjoyed that. Good luck breaking out of the foreign martial arts movie mold.

I want to see a martial arts movie where the hero is routinely beat up in equal proportion to his enemies. After all, real martial artists endure as much pain as they dish out, don't they? That would be a realistic martial arts movie. The impaling was pretty cool, tho
  • Pantotheante
See the Oldboy 'hammer fight'. One of the most amazing, brutal fight sequences I've ever seen. And it's Korean. And does not fit into any mold.
  • You forgot to mention that Oldboy is no martial arts movie at all.
  • like Rocky?
    lol
  • Joe Kick-Ass
    Me likey the trailer!!!
  • That was pretty god damn amazing. The only other 'coming soon' movie I'm looking forward to more right now is Inglorious Bastards.
  • haha! the last move was the best, with the pole.
  • Alll I got to say is bitchin... This and Ong Bak 2 are gonna be rockin...
  • This looked like it could be pretty cool. The last shot was wicked and the fight scene in the elevator looked sweet. Ong Bak was bad-ass and it would be hard to top it but I'll watch this. How about we see this dude and Tony Jaa duel it out. Now that would be entertaining.
  • This does look kind of fun, but I don't think you can put it in the same category as Ong Bak. Tony Jaa has something that we haven't seen since Bruce Lee and that is the strength to sell the moves. He moves with such purpose and power it brings a reality to the kicks and punches and breaks that less powerful martial artists can't. It's what made Chocolate not work for me. If the moves scream fake to me I just can't get into a martial arts movie that much.
  • Hasn't anyone here seen ONG BAK 2? It was in my opinion wayyy more kick ass then the first ong bak.
  • It's out already? Gotta see it.
  • EnkiduV3
It's been out for a while in Thailand. I found a copy with English subtitles online somewhere. The extra shipping costs were worth importing it. I still like The Protector more, but Ong Bak 2 was amazing. I still want to check out this movie, but I don't think it will stack up to Tony Jaa's movies.

All martial arts films always use the term "a new breed" of action when it usually is a lot of the same. I'm a big fan of martial arts movies and will see this one as well, it does look pretty good.
  • Looks good. New martial art stars are always welcome and also movies like these. I know this inevitably gets compared to ong bak and tony ja movies but why can't they just coexist without the comparison.
  • Woah!

Didn't know my neighbours were up to no good! Looks good though it seems to borrow heavily from the "Ong Bak" school of film making. Still, being a fan of the "no wires/no cables" genre of martial arts, I'll be looking forward to this.

  • The shipping container scenes and the ending really killed it, but the rest of the trailer was a liitle safe. Definitely caught my curiosity.
  • ninjawt
Must watch, WTF!!!!,NO IT IS NOT. The guy isn't tony jaa and he never will be, you see the fight scenes and they look so fake, like the stunt men were afraid of getting hut.
I won't even waste my time download this.
And you, slashfilm blogger, grow up, rent some jackie chan films and watch and learn/.
  • Ira
As violent and painful as Tony Jaa's fighting Choreography looks I think this guy looks 1000 tikmes more amazing. He moves more like a fighter and less like a violent acrobat. I really never liked tony Jaa but this guy looks like some one I will be keeping up with for years
  • More like a fighter? You gotta be kidding. He's way too much Jackie Chan style. Too many useless, boring and ineffective moves, he's more dancing than fighting. Which is fine, but not for this kind of genre.
  • managawa
    haha...
i think u said like that cos u didn't know how pencak silat really..
silat not just talk about fighting but their culture...n their princip..
so u have known abaut indonesia n u might like tht.
  • yes. that is all.
  • Rune
    SOLD!
    That was impressive.
  • PROTECTOR_FAN
Reminded me strongly of The Protector, also a great martial arts movie.
  • Goddamn! I'm usually not one for action or martial arts films, but... Goddamn! That looks like it will be a lot of fun!
  • Solid
I'm going to impale someone just to celebrate how awesome that was.
  • I will watch this. Of that there is no doubt.

I do like that the fights look shot with an eye towards letting us see the fight itself -- none of the quick cut crap that permeates too many action films.

As for comparisons to Jaa and Ong Bak, too soon. Let's see the movie before we pigeonhole it.
  • Scott
    That was fucking pimp
  • This looks absolutely brilliant.
  • awesome!!! action seemed real, and the action was based on the movement of the people not the edit of the shots...
  • That dude should have guessed he was gonna get impaled.
  • Aaron
So is silat for real? I saw it on human weapon and it looked like folk-dance nonsense.
  • The Cursed
    Yes, it is real.
and yes it is that devastating(sometimes even more).
And comes in many flavors too. From the speedy blows style to slow crushing ones. From the hard strikes to the willowwy ones.
There's near hundreds styles in Silat. And some are not even documented, yet. This movie is just showing one style, The Sumatran Tiger. There're more than one style in Silat even just for The Tiger style.

And also, yes, some of it's element is based on and used in folk dance.
Just like Capoiera is based on dance.
  • Having just watched Legend of Drunken Master 2 for the first time, the kid looks slow as hell.

    Still looks pretty cool though.
  • Ryan
Martial arts that looks real none of this hollywood fake shit , I'm in
  • That looks awesome, painful and violent. Everything a good martial arts movie should be.
