ponyo poster top

Disney has released the theatrical poster for the American release of Legendary Japanese filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki’s latest movie Ponyo (retitled for the domestic release). The film was released last July in Japan, and has since grossed over ¥15.0 billion ($153.1 million). Head on over to AICN to see the poster in high resolution. I love the bright blue color, and the logo looks like something branded by Pixar.

Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale The Little Mermaid, the film tells the story of a baby goldfish named Ponyo (voiced by Noah Cyrus) who desires to be a human, and gets her wish. She runs away from her home in the sea and befriends a five-year-old human boy named Sosuke (Frankie Jonas). Other cast members include Cate Blanchett, Matt Damon, Tina Fey, Cloris Leachman, Liam Neeson, Lily Tomlin and Betty White. Ponyo will hit theaters on August 14th 2009.

I would hope that /Film readers have seen some of Miyazaki’s films, but for those of you who haven’t, here are the cliff notes: Miyazaki is the Japanese equivalent of Walt Disney and Steven Spielberg combined. His films aren’t just commercial successes but also internationally critically acclaimed.

Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke have won Picture of the Year at the Japan Academy Prize (basically the equivalent of the Best Picture Oscar at the Academy Awards). Spirited Away also holds the honor of being the only anime film to ever win an American Academy Award. If you haven’t seen any of his movies, I recommend that you run (not walk) to the store right now and buy (not rent) Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Tororo and Howl’s Moving Castle.

I’ve embedded the Japanese trailer for Ponya below.

    Great movie .
  • Steve
Kind of looks like it has a condom on its head, though, in the poster.
  • GellyORrubber
I swear that is exactly what I thought when I saw it...damn disney and their 'sublcriminal' messages.
  • the movie was good subbed, hope my opinion doesn't change with the dubbed version
  • Kat
I don't really like the poster, it's way to much like something Pixar would do. It's the first thing I thought of.

Even though, you can bet I'll be seeing this when it's hits theaters on Aug. 14! I've seen it many times already but come on, you should never pass up a Ghibli film in theaters.
  • luke_test
    I like the poster.

I'm a film snob. I would much rather watch it with English subtitles.
  • So awesome. Very excited to see this new Miyazaki film :D
  • RWF
Haha it does kind of look like a condom...

But seriously... this movie looks amazing, I can't wait.
  • It's great to see that Miyazaki's Ponyo will finally be released.

This poster reminds me of Pixar, too, especially the typography which seems to come directly from Finding Nemo. But I still love the poster with its minimalism.
  • shadow
that is an absolutely gorgeous poster
  • It came out a few months ago in Hong Kong, and the title song is now a cult classic, on equivalent with "1337" or "Over 9,000" in Hong Kong.
  • Ahhh I can't wait to see this on the big screen.
  • Glad to hear I'm not the only one who thought that.
  • Dvq
    poster is Finding Nemo...ish.
  • I have no opinion of the movie at this point but... would it be terribly bad to ask for a live action movie featuring Neeson, Damon, and Blanchett?
  • Somebody please tell me this is a wide release!
  • There will be Blood
Finding Nemo Part II: This time it's personal?
  • Joe
If they can get Blanchett, Fey, Damon, Neeson, etc., why the fuck are a Jonas and a Cyrus doing main voicing work? That's ridiculous, and I hope it doesn't kill this film...
  • Lencho
Maybe they think fans of the more famous Cyrus and Jonas kids will see Ponyo to support their little siblings. As if that'll get more viewers.
  • Lucas
i'm not worried about the choice of actors. so what if they are Disney sibs, i'm willing to trust Hayao's track record and not diss until I hear them.
and hopefully Joe did the score
  • luke_test
I would much rather warch the Japanese version with English subtitles.

Hopefully they will include the Japanese audio with English subs on the DVD.
  • They always include them on the DVD.
  • eldudarino
    why?
  • Looks like they're ripping off the original Finding Nemo poster - http://www.impawards.com/2003/finding_nemo.html
  • sweet.... and I would also much rather hear the Japanese version with the subtitles. I hate English dubbed movies. they ruin the "foreign film" experience for me...ugh.
  • John Lasseter from Pixar always does a really good job of dubbing Miyazaki movies. It's quite impressive.
  • I would completely agree with Samir_J, Lasseter and Pixar have am excellent relationship with Miyazaki and do amazing dubs. It's not like watching the pic of a foreign language film where the actors voices and tones are connected to the performers – these are animated characters after all who are dubbed from other actors voices.

Each to their own, but I'd rather have a great dub by top draw English speaking actors and concentrate on watching the film than reading subtitles in this case. Besides, I barely consider Miyazaki work as foreign film because animated film is so universal.
  • I'm a big fan of Miyazaki, and I can't wait to see this, but I don't live in any of the cities that it will be released in here.
  • Don't even get me started on how much I love Hayao Miyazaki's versions of fairy tales. This film looks pretty decent and I'm excited to see how he twists the similarities of The Little Mermaid.
  • Traie
The logo is pretty similar to Finding Nemo
  • This is the first thing I thought of when I saw it. Looks like the same exact font.
  • I am actually hoping for a subtitled presentation of the film in a theater. I doubt I will get one, but that just means I will have to wait until the DVD comes out.

Besides being one of the premiere Japanese film makes Miyazaki is one of the best film makers of all time and really has made some of the most visually stunning movies with some of the most memorable characters I have ever seen in any movies.
  • Freaking awesome! I just watched Princess Mononoke a few days ago. Even the dub voice actors look good. Neeson, Damon, Leechman, Fey, Blanchett. Cyrus and Jonas are pretty major turnoffs to a dubbed version though. Miyazaki usually gets awesome dubs.
  • Geist
I remember watching past Miyazaki films subbed in theatres when I went to see them. I saw this in Japanese without subs and with my limited Japanese I still got the gist of it, but I'm looking forward to it again. Like everyone else I rather watch it with subs but with an allstar voice cast like that I wouldn't hate it I'm sure.
  • dagreenman18
the "5 british actors" rule will hopefully counter the suck of Cyrus and Jonas VA.

otherwise, i cannot fucking wait for this. I own every Miyazaki film.
  • Felisa
Oh goodness! I can't wait for this film! I adore Miyazaki's films. Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke...ah...all wonderful!
  • I hope Miyazaki does another movie as big as big as Mononoke. I heard that he is playing with the idea of making a live action movie, but he couldn't get funding for it
  • I must see this movie!!!!! I heard something about this being Miyazaki's last film; is this sadly true?

"I recommend that you run (not walk) to the store right now and buy (not rent) Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Tororo and Howl’s Moving Castle."
Don't forget Castle In The Sky and Kiki's Delivery Service!
  • JavaJunkie
He's been saying that for the last 10 years. Thankfully, a true artist can't stop creating :)
  • I've seen this movie and I liked it, it's more in the style of Totoro, than princess mononoke or nausicaa, but the animation it's spectacular as always.

I also would like to recommend a movie that is in the list of the "ghibli museum library", it's called "Azur & Asmar", the animation in this movie could be hung in a art gallery for sure!
  • Can't wait. I love me some Miyazaki.
  • Yes, I love the care he puts into promoting Miyazaki's films in the US and treats the translations of the script with respect.
  • Def gonna go out and see this when it comes out...It might be weird, but I love Hayao Miyazaki’s films!
  • Looks like GREATNESS!
  • Meg
Miyazaki rocks almost every movie he makes -- but whoever was in charge of that domestic poster needs to be fired. Look, trying to cash in on the Nemo craze is A) a few years too late, and B) insulting to Miyazaki, who shouldn't need blatant comparison to American films. Keep them separate, they're both fantastic.

love finding nemo!!...just had to share this pic:
