GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra Movie Trailer

GI Joe

Paramount Pictures has released a new movie trailer for Stephen Sommer’s GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra. If you thought the Superbowl teaser looked ridiculous, get ready for more silly action effects and horribly written, cheesy dialogue. I will admit, some of the action looks fun (yet still stupid), especially the car chase sequence. And I’m really interested to see Snake Eyes battle Storm Shadow. Watch the trailer after the jump, and leave your thoughts in the comments below.

From the Egyptian desert to deep below the polar ice caps, the elite G.I. JOE team uses the latest in next-generation spy and military equipment to fight the corrupt arms dealer Destro and the growing threat of the mysterious Cobra organization to prevent them from plunging the world into chaos. “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra” is directed by Stephen Sommers (“The Mummy,” “The Mummy Returns”).

GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra hits theaters on August 7th 2009.

    that was cute

I dunno, I think it'd be better if they made it a little bit silly.
  • nelson
may not be great but i can already tell it will be damn entertaining some cgi looks poor but looks cool snake eyes will steal the show for sure
  • CGI doesn't look completely finished. Also, you're watching it on a tiny computer screen. It should look a lot more decent in the theaters.
  • Smash
Considering Sommers track record in effects driven films, I can't image the cgi improving that much.
  • Solid
that part at the end with the matrix slow mo and the halo guys doing some type of keanu reeves shit, was better than all of transformers 1.
  • Johnny Boy
    amen to that
  • anonymous
    lol. preach it.
  • A comment like this just bewilders me. How anybody can attribute 'good' to anything in that trailer is amazing.
  • i think it will be fun action movie like last year's speed racer.
  • don't like the comparison, because I thought Speed Racer sucked. However, I agree it should be a fun action flick.
  • i actually liked speed racer.
  • I liked Speed Racer too, and i could see the similarities although box office wise GI Joe will likely do far better.
  • anonymous
Speed Racer was underrated and unappreciated.
  • agree w/ anonymous

looks good, some cheesy CGI effects but it should be better than Dragon Ball.
  • How much is that saying?
  • Shilo
    I liked dragonball....
  • Seriously? Kill yourself...
  • chuck
    great looking popcorn movie!!
  • between that and the trailer of Transformers 2 with paris bombed by decepticons i'm starting to think that Hollywood have a problem with the french. lol, anyway it seems pretty fun and completly dumb. I'm gonna enjoy this movie a little bit more than i was expecting it seems...
  • i'm not even getting a slight fun popcorn movie vibe off this. it just looks like it's gonna fail.
  • monosierra
Its a fun summer film, nothing more. Chill, detractors. I will complain only if the action is terrible and the film boring, but not when the dialogue is cheesy or the story lame. There are serious films and there are fun films. When we're lucky, we get both in the same movie. Otherwise, just relax and grab the popcorn.
  • filmkid
sorry but this looks really stupid the only good thing i like is Snake Eyes vs Storm Shadow apart from that this trailer makes me want to say WTF are you serious
  • This looks like a Dragonball: Evolution/Team America hybrid redux (Only with a higher budget and even sillier dialogue).

This trailer doesn't set up the movie at all and instead flaunts flat out ridiculous special effects that don't compliment an already what seems to be "shallow" film.

Also what's up with Paramounts love for destroying French landmarks ? (Not that it bothers me, its just interesting)
  • musicsoup
the GI Joe animated series that was running on Adultswim.com is bad ass. I can only hope the movie is half as cool. Not a bad trailer, but I really want to see it in HD on QT.
  • that was good, but this will be bad.
  • Stormy
Kinda like comparing Attack of the Clones to Genndy Tartakovsky's Clone Wars cartoons.
  • nelson
i'd rather watch a kewl looking film fail than something like dball that is just embarrassing to watch LOL

I can deal with the lame dialog and sub-par effects. But why does G.I. Joe need guys running around in bootleg Iron Man suits? As the best of the best in the world (as stated in the trailer) wouldn't the teams personal skills be efficient enough to get the job done? Why have the need for super suits? I remember the good old days when the cartoon had Joe's taking down a Cobra base with little more than a tank and a few laser rifles.
  • its looks okay!

    The teaser was way better!
but i WILL most likely see it!
    Because it looks fun!
  • edward
    "just grab the popcorn"
since when does a fun movie have to be dumb?
you people act like "die hard" or any of the other great blockbuster films never happened. these aren't "summer action movies", they're pieces of re-hashed shit.

    there's cheese all over this.
  • CGI JOE!
  • Mel
Will this be 2009's Speed Racer? I'm guessing so, however I'm willing to give it a shot because I love me some Channing Tatum =)
  • musicsoup
oh by the way peter, way to be on top of your shit. aint it cool has been serious slacking lately, and your site is on top of everything.
  • Albert Brodsky
That looked better than I expected. I wasn't expecting much. Anyway, it looks fun.
Can't be any worse than Wolverine.
  • This is the Dragon ball evolution on the summer ?=/
  • at least they put in the money into this one. so no, i don't think it'll be like Dragonball.
  • they install some money and Sommers is much more gifted ^_^
  • This looks so lame and dumb, but will probably be fun to watch.
  • Tandoori Jones
Dis you see that Hummer!!?!? They flipped the bitch
  • Binaryshock
the movie looks like exactly what a live action G.I.Joe movie should be. Joe was always cheesy and over the top. So they refine the cheesy a bit, to a more sophisticated looking cheese and kept the over the topness... and Baroness is incredibly hot so SCORE!!! lol
  • Rob-wa
I don't know... I think that cheese would go great with popcorn.
  • Why do people go frickking insane over Transformers footage, and yet trash GI JOE footage?!? I don't see the logic. Both have incredible bad dialogue, cheese, and insane action. Yes this looks dumb, but it could be fun, like Transformers.
  • musicsoup
does stephen summers run around calling himself the second coming? has he lashed out at other directors? is he a man-child-baby? has he made the claim that his movies are the best things ever? does he use the word "awesome!" in every sentence?

    nope.

michael bay is a douchebag who thinks he's amazing.

stephen summers knows his place and stays there.
  • Russel
I wasn't sure what was off, until I saw "from the director of The Mummy" and nothing against said director, but there's something missing that doesn't quite put him on the level of Bay or McG, maybe it's the lighter tone or the lack of giant robots.

Or maybe it's the FX team behind him. Probably that too. ;)
