Steven Soderbergh Praises James Cameron’s Avatar

It seems like every other week now a new filmmaker or studio executive makes a comment about how James Cameron’s Avatar is going to revolutionize cinema. Jon Favreau has called Avatar “a game-changer” and having seen some footage, he thinks “it’s the future.” Recently Sony head Amy Pascal told Forbes that she thinks Avatar is “going to change the way you consume entertainment. I don’t know that it will ever be the way you see dramas, but I can’t say anymore that it won’t be.” And Steven Spielberg has even predicted that Avatar will be the biggest 3-D live-action film ever.

Academy Award winning director Steven Soderbergh is the latest filmmaker to praise Cameron’s upcoming sci-fi epic: “I’ve seen some stuff and holy sh*t,” Soderbergh told ComingSoon . “It’s the craziest sh*t ever. That could negate everything I just said.”

Cameron’s new film is being treated like the second coming. I’m not sure how the film could possibly live up to all the ginormously hype. But just like all of you, I’m riding on the high buzz and hoping it will be great.

  • I guess this is good news but what is he supposed to say? Nah, it sucks? c'mon now.
  • He could say that it looks good, but saying "holy shit" is another level.
  • true. i just can't believe the hype until I see it for myself.
  • But if they build this film up any more and it doesn't cure at least three types of cancer on opening night, it's going to be a disappointment.
  • I predict it will immediately eradicate the swine flu, polio, and statutory rape... not even Avatar can cure cancer.

    It's James Cameron. 'nuff said.
  • I wasn't hyped for this film at all. Now everything has changed. I feel a strong emotion building up inside me, it's curiosity, i guess.

Well, even James Cameron said last year that this movie would have the same impact that "2001: A Space Odyssey" had in 1968. So, it is a big responsability and he favor that this directors are doing to Cameron is really something.
    "Titanic" be careful...
  • So I guess a lot of people are gonna get stoned for this.
  • fex
I'd start loading one but I've seen nere a Trailer.
  • cjstearns
James Cameron just " get's it ". I have complete faith in this film.
  • It would be a darn shame if this isn't as "revolutionizing" as everyone who's seen the movie is making it out to be.

But I'm hoping for the best.
  • This better be awesome. All this hype is driving me insane.
  • I really don't know what to expect from this movie because I have hard time imagining how this movie could "change the way you consume entertainment" but the hype is undeniable and I'm excited to see this, whatever it ends up being. Those are some strong words from Soderbergh.

I hope he makes a 3D movie based on the shirt he's wearing in that photo.
    BATTLE ANGEL FTW
  • James Cameron I believe is tackling on the Alita film after Avatar. He will be applying the same technology apparently.
  • Waldo
What is James Cameron's avatar anyway?
  • seriously?
  • Waldo
Well I've never seen his avatar before...

The Battle Angel anime & manga rock pretty fucken hard.
  • it'll be the abyss times 100 i gather... hope it isn't a buzz killer.
  • Buh-Low May
Puh. It's just a movie and it ain't gonna look any more special then anything else out there. This movie should have Ghostbusters in it. Then it'd really have some impact!

    I've heard it cures aids

Why haven't we seen a single photo yet? I'm getting tired of just READING about how amazing this thing is supposed to look. I want to SEE it.
  • im sorry, but what is it again that is supposedly so revolutionary about this film again? i dont quite understand. we've seen 3d, we've seen cgi. somehow the cgi looks 'really really good'? i know they have new technology to see some cgi in real time when they shoot, but how does it affect the final product? if anyone knows more about the technical / production side of the film i'd appreciate it.

I'm still waiting for my teaser trailer. I'm so ready for the uncanny valley.
  • Apparently the 3d makes it jump the uncanny valley entirely.
  • Wasn't it Spielberg who told us how amazing Jake Loyd was in "The Phantom Menace"? And just what is the highest grossing live action 3D film right now? Spy Kids 3?
  • lucas probably promised him a fourth indiana jones to say that comment.
  • Wouldn't that be a kick in the nuts!
  • after a few hundred million dollars it better be good
  • Waterworld begs to differ.
  • Yeah I'm still waiting for Universal to send me a refund for that one
  • I don't put my cynicism in a box lightly, but I'll do it for Cameron. Gotta be unabashedly hopeful for something in this world. I'm down for Avatar.
  • either way i'm either seeing the most awesome movie since forever, or i getta tell steven spielburg, john favreau and steven soderbergh they're full of shit. win win.

I can't help but wonder, how often does a movie that changes cinema forever get lots of hype before it's release. I wasn't around and honestly have never heard, does anyone know how much 2001 was hyped before it's release? Obviously Kubrick was well known by then but did they really predict it's effect? Look at Star Wars, most people thought it would be a complete failure. The same goes for The Lord of the Rings, lots of people early on expected it to be a colossal flop that would eventually be adapted for television.
  • TehViral
Can't you see viral for Avatar is already started, with all those so-called "comments from fellow directors"?
Still, we didn't get any image, or trailer or nothing. I think we'll be hugely disappointed. Too much hype is always leading to huge disappointments.
  • yep
Space odyssey bomed when it was shown. This will do the same. But I like 2001
  • avatar sux
Avatar will look great, but i can tell you right now people would rather see real other people and real locations, not this artificial crap. I hope this film bombs big because if it doesn't than 3d will be the death of film making. Then again unless he has created a film where I can walk around the film in a 360 degree circle and view it from any angle than he aint impressing me with this bullcrap 3d. Bring back reality...
  • FreDre
You can still watch indie movies then.
Me? I want to see things that are impossible in real life, and if it means that we have to use a shit load of CGI, then allright.
Also, Avatar is using real life footage too, but you probably won't notice it anyway.
  • Sci-fi
Given all the hype and money poured into this film, Avatar will probably make a boat load of money. That will undoubtedly give birth to any number of new 3D movies. But at the end of the day, 3D is a gimmicky 'gotcha' trick that constantly breaks the fourth wall and is actually less like reality than 2D. For occasional light popcorn fair it's fine, but I'd hate to see the whole action genre rush to 3D just because Cameron makes money off this. A part of me almost hopes Avatar is an enormous flop just so that doesn't happen. As the article says, I can't see this ever making its way to serious dramas.

Not at all sure this will be that ground breaking, but it does look insanely cool. I've seen some of the footage, and what you can't discount is his ability as a story teller. The effects are beyond amazing, but then so was Gollum. What is so very cool is how imagined the new world Avatar takes place on is - it is enticing and drop dead gorgeous. Look at Cameron's record, and even if this isn't "groundbreaking", its going to be a hell of a movie.
