This Week in DVD is a column that compiles all the latest info regarding new DVD releases, sales, and exclusive deals from stores including Target, Best Buy and Fry’s.

Please don’t take the commentary on the movies and TV shows too seriously, as they’re meant not to be reviews but rather previews that include the general thoughts and ramblings of a twice-committed DVD addict. The categories represent solely the author’s intentions towards the DVDs at hand, and are in no way meant to be a reflection on what he thinks other people should rent or buy. So if he ends up putting a movie you like in the “Skip it” section without having seen it, please keep in mind that the time you could spend leaving a spiteful but ultimately futile comment could instead be used for more pleasant things in life. Like buying DVDs.

JCVD
Jean-Claude Van Damme has made some pretty questionable career choices, but whether you love or hate the guy, you really have to admire the ingenuity on display in JCVD, which is very much a response to that rather misguided career. In the film he plays himself: a broke, out-of-luck actor who’s battling for the custody of his daughter. But when he’s thrown into a real-life hostage situation, the world sees a side of Van Damme they’ve never seen before. Marking the first ever Van Damme flick to be ranked ‘fresh’ on Rotten Tomatoes, the meta, self-referential and utterly unique JCVD has been praised heavily for Jean-Claude’s touching and deeply personal performance, which—much like the depicted storyline—also shows a side of him that the world’s never seen before.
Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: Deleted scenes.

WHAT DOESN’T KILL YOU
A gritty indie drama about two guys stuck in a life of poverty and crime? Sounds a little too familiar for my tastes, but between the film’s positive reviews and my admiration for the two lead performers—the underrated Mark Ruffalo and Ethan Hawke—there’s enough of a draw here to encourage a rental.
Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: Commentary with co-writer/director Brian Goodman and co-writer Donnie Wahlberg, deleted and alternate scenes, and a ‘Makes You Stronger: The Making of What Doesn’t Kill You’ featurette.

MARTYRS
Horrifically brutal horror films are an acquired taste, and the reviews for Martyrs are a clear demonstration of this. It’s a movie of the ‘torture porn’ variety that some have said exists simply to shock the audience and others have argued aims to be as intellectually satisfying as it is provocative. Whatever the case, the debate has been enough to pique my interest, so I’ll be sure to check it out and report back with my thoughts on the /Filmcast.
Blu-ray? No.
Notable Extras: Introduction by writer/director Pascal Laugier and a making-of documentary.

THE UNINVITED
No. No more. I refuse to see another lazy, dumbed-down Americanized remake of a well-regarded Asian horror film. We’ve gotten so many in the past five years, it’s become almost impossible to even tell their trailers apart anymore. The Uninvited may not be the worst reviewed entry of this seemingly never-ending remake trend/plague, but there still doesn’t appear to be anything particularly unique or noteworthy about to justify wasting any time on it.
Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: An ‘Unlocking The Uninvited’ featurette, deleted scenes, and an alternate ending.

BRIDE WARS
Kate Hudson has starred in only good movie in her entire career: Almost Famous. That was almost ten years ago. Since then, she’s starred in such films as You, Me and Dupree, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, The Skeleton Key, and Fool’s Gold. And now, Bride Wars. Venture a guess as to whether the movie’s good or not. Please, guess.
Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: 3 deleted scenes and a ‘Perfect White Dress – Vera Wang’ featurette.

  • Gotta love the week of movies that no one really wants to see. I guess one day I might watch JCVD.
  • The Uninvited might be okay as your standard horror flick with a twist, but the post is right here: forget that remake! And better take a look at the FAR far superior source material for it, the South Korean movie 'A Tale Of Two Sisters'.

'A Tale Of Two Sisters' is really one of the BEST (horror) movies I've seen. It's not only a horror movie and a (mystery) thriller with multi-layered storyline and a great level of depth and complexity, but it is also a drama which is able to creat emotional impact in a way its remake never would have been able to do.

(Btw., 'The Uninvited' may have been 'inspired' by the original main plot, but the story itself is partially changed and simplified. So it's really not a direct remake, it just tries to use the good ideas of the original, but in the end it is just a inferior, standard horror movie compared to ATOTS.)

So if you've get the chance, try to watch the original, at best with the original language and subtitles! :-)
  • JCVD has already been out for a while.

    JCVD = BUY IT!

You forgot to even mention Nothing But the Truth. Much better film than State of Play.

I actually found The Uninvited surprisingly good. Having not seen A Tale of Two Sisters for a good while, the twist took me by surprise and there was actually some decent scares for what is essentially a 'by the numbers' remake of an Asian film. I genuinely think the Guard Brothers tried to make a good horror film, and it's definitely a weekend rental recommendation.

Bride Wars was terrible however, and should be avoided at all costs. JVCD was very interesting, and the monologue was beautifully done.

Martyrs is highly recommended to the horror aficionado. Don't let the talk of 'torture porn' bog the film down, as it's really not about that. It's not a film you enjoy as such, but the unsettling scenes will knock you clean off your seat.

Please keep in mind that the time you could spend writing commentaries to movies you haven't seen could instead be used for more pleasant things in life. Like watching the movies.
  • Sure thing. Let me know where I can send you my contact info so you can start sending me screener DVDs and paychecks for my time.

Just bought Martyrs. Hope it's as good as everyone says it is.
  • Not sure I would buy it, only because it's the kind of film I could never see myself watching again. Great film, but not the easiest of films to get through...
  • I watched that this weekend and it was pretty good. Definitely not the animated GI Joe I grew up with and it was the better for it.
  • Haha. Seriously. David Chen. Roofaalo? WTF.
  • Yeah, I can't wait to see Mark Roofollow's performance in What doesn't kill you.
  • Infrafan
Glad to see the X-Men animated series from the nineties finally reaching DVD. A great show really true to the source material.
  • Mark Roofallo sure is a great actor...
  • "she’s starred in such films as You, Me and Dupree, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, The Skeleton Key, and Fool’s Gold."

Don't forget My Best Friend's Girl which is perhaps the worst of them allllllll. I personally want to see Kate Hudson's new movie with Jessica Alba. The amount of bad that could come out of that combo blows my mind. I can't believe Casey Affleck elected to be a part of it. I bet it took all the power in his being not to just start laughing his ass off everyday on set.

I loved The Uninvited. Infact I'm gonna probably buy it on DVD. For the lulz....^_^
  • JCVD... in a own life drama... omg...

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days was a great movie!
  • Kate Hudson...Mathew McConaughey

    I rest my case

only new movie im watching this week is GI RESOLUTE!!! Probably be 1 million times better than the actual movie
  • I loved JCVD but then I saw The Wrestler and i felt horrible for Jean Claude.
Mickey Rourke has already killed his chances of a proper comeback ( those velvet suits at the red carpet events didn't help).
Because of that Jean Claude didn't get a proper chance which is a damn shame.
I think he would be better off hooking up with Luc Besson's gang and making some Taken-type movies.

Ps are there any other serious turns from other action stars in the poip line? Michael Dudikoff playing a paraplegic?
Steven Seagal in the Sun Tzu biopic?
  • Steven Seagal in the Sun Tzu biopic?

I would pay to see him play an ancient Chinese man.

Yeah but he looks more like Budda lately...

HOW CAN YOU POST WHAT TO WATCH WHEN YOU AINT EVEN SEEN HALF THESE MOVIES.
    DICK FACE
  • it's just an editorial about what movies came out this week. if you read the disclaimer at the top you would understand this. furthermore, if you would like to discuss the cinematic worth of "The Uninvited" and "Bride Wars" than have at it.

finally, typing only in caps just make yourself look like the dick face. is that even a real insult? go back to grade school.
  • How do you decide which movies to see in theatres? The same way Adam picks what DVDs to rent.
  • Palmer
Seems like slim pickings this week.
  • the Uninvited is HILARIOUS and FUNNY if you want a good laugh!
  • I really liked JCVD and I'm a big Mark Ruffalo fan but I didn't like "What Doesn't Kill You" although it's worth a rent I guess a better movie almost along the same lines was "Before The Devil Knows Your Dead" also staring Ethan Hawke. But the big new for me Star Trek The Oringal Series Season 1 on blu-ray(yeah I know it was already released on HD-DVD).
  • JCVD is defently a must buy! On my top 5 of 2008.
  • I saw JCVD on Netflix Watch Instantly, and while I dug it, it unfortunately was dubbed, as opposed to subtitled, which bothered me. Interesting movie though.
  • How is the monolouge dubbed? Must sound terrible.
  • Pretty bad. Which is a shame, because it's Van Damme really pouring his heart out, and you definitely lose something when its just some guy with a French accent translating it.
