Duncan Jones’ Moon Deserves a Bigger Opening

moon

If you ask me, Sony Pictures Classics is probably the WORST indie distributor. They mis-advertised and buried the 2008 Sundance favorite The Wackness, and countless other films.

This year at Sundance, SPC picked up the rights to the Sam Rockwell old-school space sci-fi thriller Moon. The film is running on a lot of buzz, and of course, Sony has revealed that their June 12th “limited opening” will only consist of theaters in two cities: New York in Los Angeles. I’m sure the plan is to expand to more cities, but SPC is certainly no Fox Searchlight. They don’t know how to do a platform release without award buzz.

Moon is such a wonderful indie sci-fi film. I encourage anyone near New York and LA to see this film on June 12th. Hopefully people in other cities will get the chance to see this film on the big screen.

  • I don't know how many people in my mid sized mid-western city have heard about this movie and are really excited. I've talked to a bunch of folks who have heard about it and are stoked, but now this. So disappointing.
  • I live in a mid sized mid western city (well, actually a small town) and I've been pretty pumped for this movie. I'll probably have to wait for this to come out on dvd, which won't be till autumn.

Do you know the Sony Pictures Classic website has links to "buy DVD" on movies that they haven't released on DVD!!!!

Good films go to die indeed. They don't update their website!
  • I saw this a month or so ago. I absolutely loved it. Sam Rockwell is excellent and Duncan Jones proves himself as a director.

I'm hoping to check this one out at Tribeca this Thursday
  • That is really sucky news. I've heard lots of good things about this movie and am excited to see it but I won't be near LA or New York on June 12th and will have to wait around for it.
  • How they treated Synecdoche, New York is unforgivable. I look forward to catching Moon on DVD — like so many of their other releases.
  • Germain
"Unforgivable?" You mean how they kept a movie that most normal people would never understand in theaters around the country for MONTHS? That's unforgivable? They gave that movie every chance to be seen. Even the guy below, "huh?" said his theater played the movie for "a mere few weeks." You think SNY was bringing in huge numbers during that? probably not.
  • huh?
Thanks to Sony Pictures Classics, I had to drive over an hour just to see Synecdoche myself. I live in a pretty heavily populated area too. I was lucky, because even that theatre only had the movie for a mere few weeks. I only hope to get so lucky with Moon as well.
  • ManMadeMoon
Doing everything we can to make sure it goes right. But nerve-wracking, of course. Come on NY and LA, help us out here! ;)
  • huh?
Really look forward to seeing your film and wish you the best.
  • Hmm..I think us in Hawaii are screwed. Guess I'll have to find some other means to watch this film when it releases.
  • This is my favorite film of the year so far and I'm pissed I won't be able to see it in the theater.

Heck, I even made my version of the trailer!

its going to be playing longer than just taht day right?
  • it definitely deserves more attention and more screens.
  • Geist
The great thing about the LA release is that it's not always just IN the city. A lot of these I've seen in Pasadena, Claremont, and even Irvine. I'll definitely go check it out.
  • I plan on going. Anyone have a list of NYC theater(s) showing this?
  • It'll probably be playing at the Angelika and the indie theater on 65th and Bway. I'm guessing but those are the most likely spots.
  • B RI
Nice. Keep the word going. Moon is gonna be sweet!
  • I agree, Sony Pictures Classics ain't shit. they never do much for foreign films, either. a real bloody shame.
  • Josh
Fox Searchlight completely fucked up the release of Sunshine. That movie could have made a lot more than $3 million had it been released in more than 400 theatres.
  • SUNSHINE_FAN
    I'm in total agreement.
  • Hoping i can get back to posting constructive criticism on this site and not seeing it deleted immediately. Peter, did you not already know/assume that limited release would mean NY/LA openings like 90% of other limited release openings?
  • Palmer
A shame, I don't think my local theater even got the Wackness. But things might change, who knows, they might smarten up.
  • Goobity
Based on the trailer alone, I'll buy the eventual DVD. It would've been cool to see on the big screen though.
  • Brad
AAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrgh! I'm out of LA till mid July and this is one of the film I've been looking forward to for forever.
  • Brad
    *films
  • Wnat to see this so bad, but it probably won't play in my mall-crowd area. *Sigh*
  • Want to see this so bad, but it probably won't play in my mall-crowd area. *Sigh*
  • My local suburbanite theater DID eventually get The Wackness, in early August. It only played for 6 days though. Proabably because nobody ever effing heard of it.

I hope they get Moon. They do get a few indies/low theater screen films. They even played The Assassination of Jesse James, I got to attend opening weekend in their big 400 seat auditorium, which was awesome, and there was even a huge turnout for it.
  • I'm excited! I'm going to cinevegas and watching it there! hopefully I'll get to meet Duncan Jones, I hear he's a cool guy!
  • arthur
    this movie is gonna rock
  • Infrafan
I could just tell this was one of those movies I'd have to wait on. Hard to be any kind of film fan when you live where I do.
  • Moon looks rad. I look forward to seeing this.
  • We probably won't get it in Australia till 2020, damn.
  • C'on
If they read this: please send to Florida!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • I really wish this movie was showing where I live! The trailer looks amazing and I have heard nothing but great things. Sam Rockwell is the man.
  • It's to bad SPC is so inept at marketing their releases because they are one of the most generous when it comes to trailers, posters, and other items. For my money though, IFC is still worse.
  • Make sure you post another entry reminding us!
  • I better be seeing this in Seattle
  • jared
Hey Peter, Moon is being screened at the San Francisco International Film Festival this Sunday (http://fest09.sffs.org/films/film_details.php?id=... and the director is expected to be in attendance.
  • Science Fiction is Great. Sam Rockwell is.... average on a good day. Amalgamate them together and this is what you get. Funny about Sony though, wackness was a non-event. Is is even out on dvd yet?
  • Germain
How is it news that a small, independent movie is ONLY opening in NY & LA? Doesn't this happen with, oh, EVERY SINGLE MOVIE?
  • LittleOxford
Peter wondering what year your expertise on indies began. Sony Classics has been responsible for some of the most important indie films to reach audiences far longer than indies like Fox Searchlight. Most indies open in NY/LA first, then roll out across the country. Further your comments on how they bury films is amusing. I guess you would agree that they did a good job burying Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon!
  • drbendy
WHAT? This is the one film i've been looking forward to and now i'll have to watch it on bloody DVD. So it's not coming to the UK at all? Still haven't seen a classic sci-fi film in the cinema.
  • yeahyeahtotheyeah
I dont know why people are running with this slamming the rollout thing. Everyone wants to see this movie. It's not like MOON is NOT going to rollout, it is just like any other indie. This is like the third site I've read where people in the comments section diss the rollout....People just like to diss SPC.
  • Dan W
Luckily I don't live far from NYC at all. Although I'd rather it play her on LI. I can't believe they wouldn't advertise this more
  • I have to agree. I hate when movies are never released anywhere else unless it's up or an academy award. And all that does is hold up the DVD release making it harder to watch the movie.
  • sammihusainalali
it is the best website if these channel function
