Wolverine vs. Swine Flu

Wolverine Poster

20th Century Fox has decided to postpone the Mexico City premiere of X-Men Origins: Wolverine due to the Swine Flu. The premiere was scheduled to take place on Wednesday, but the studio has decided not to risk sending “anyone into harm’s way”. [People]

The flu virus crisis will likely hurt Wolverine’s box office in the country as Mexican government has asked residents to stay home. Schools and businesses have been shut down, including the nation’s top movie theater chains. Cinepolis, Cinemex, Cinemas Lumiere and Cinemark. The remaining theater chains are expected to follow suit. [Variety]

Yea I think this could really hurt its already bruised opening. It could really get worse of there is more of an out break here in the US.
  • sambo
this film just cant catch a break
  • I think Fox secretly released the work print AND the swine flu just so they could have a couple things to blame for their stinker of a movie.
  • horrible. but true
  • I came to say the same thing... I almost feel bad... the same way I feel bad for a bum; you want to help them out but ultimately they're fucked.
  • Wise move. A lot of activities in Mexico City are being cancelled left and right for the public's safety, so Wolverine is not the only one affected.
  • I don't think I would want to go to a movie theater in the middle of an epidemic. I hope it doesn't spread too much within the U.S. because I am kinda looking forward to Wolverine and I wouldn't want to miss it for the same reason.

i thought it was a pandemic?

What the hell? It's frickin' Wolverine! His healing factor can't combat swine flu?!

    Karma's a pain, ain't it, Fox.
  • nelson
The Film probably caused the flu

shit is fucked up down here, we are all dying!!!!!!, nah, jk, its getting bad but NOT that bad... government gave us 9 days of viral vacation, yay.
  • joe
but doesn't that mean most of your other shit (fast food, certain stores) are closed as well?
  • Eric
I had tickets for the premiere, they said the premiere will be posponed till further notice, thing I don't believe, it's cancelled, obviously.
  • Just another excuse for Fox, sadly. I wonder if they'll ever admit to just making a shitty movie and not make excuses for it doing poorly.
  • joe
haha this movie has just had the shittiest luck
  • Joe Kick-Ass
I hope this doesnt happen in Arizona. I need me some Trek!
  • natas
I dont have to go to school until may 6th yay!

Well, given that piracy is common in Mexico, I'm sure most of the country has seen the movie already.
  • Piracy is common in the U.S. as well, don't you think? most of people download movies and music and stuff. Most of your country has also seen wolverine already.

What on earth are we supposed to make of this?
  • jeez this movie has had some bad luck. at least i'm one of the guys that watched the workprint but am still going to see it this weekend. only so i can watch the previews tho lol.
  • no, it's not a pandemic. Not yet anyway. It's been classified at 2 levels below pandemic, so there's no need to panic-- yet. and hopefully WHO can get it under control.
  • In the US, the strain can be easily treated by Tamiflu or Relenza if treated in the first 48 hours. It can cause death and the majority that died received poor care. For the US, this outbreak is no different than salmonella. Don't expect scenes from the movie Outbreak anytime soon.
  • Thanks, Doctor! Your about as close to one as I can get due to a lack of insurance. Thanks, America!
  • If you get positive test results for swine flu (been near someone from Mexico or had contact with pigs), then the CDC will pick up your medical bill. We have 0 fatalities in the U.S.
  • Where are you getting this information that the CDC will cover your medical bills?
  • starscream9289
Are they also gonna blame it on the economy?
    What about Global Warming?

    ....the Jews?

    p.s. I'm half-jewish :p

in Mexico City they are, i.e. Starbucks just said they are closing all of their stores for the week. (i live in Veracruz, where, allegedly, the outbreak started)
  • So how else are they handling this where you live?
  • Dvq
in my state everything is pretty much under control and calm, some people wearing protective masks, government is doing all right.
  • Nice to hear it's not as bad as the news is making it out to be.
  • Yep, more terrible news for Fox. I'm pretty sure Fox deserves this but I'm thinking no one deserves the Swine Flu.
  • Well it's actually not very surprising to delay a new film, if even the schools are shut down. Not so interesting to run a film in front of an empty theater... Maybe somewhere out is the real Wolverine, biting and scratching his way to Doc Evil who assembled the new virus :)
  • Haha, it's cute how gullible some people are. The media, it does wonderful things..
