Before the screening of Wolverine tonight, we were treated to a handful of trailers including one for Ice Age 3 - now with added Simon Pegg - and another for the Smithsonian-set Night at the Museum sequel. I was a little surprised by this new version of the Museum trailer as it featured two pretty darn surprising cameos…

Apparently, they must have some kind of groovy pop culture exhibit at the Smithsonian, at least judging from this movie. To protect you from being spoiled, I’ll put a break here before revealing who they are.

Actual shot from the movie:

Darth Vade in Night at the Museum

The first to appear, and suddenly too, is none other than perennial number-one movie baddie, Darth Vader. Cue the inevitable heavy breathing gag, of course. I was really quite surprised to see such a popular and, dare I say it, iconic character getting woven into this film but also gently amused. I don’t know how much he’ll have to do. Perhaps he’ll get to wield his lightsaber a little…? Or maybe he’ll just huff and puff a bit before going off screen for the rest of the picture? My money is on the latter.

Even better, the next cameo revealed was a true TV hero. Getting just the one line in was Oscar the Grouch. Leaning out of his trash can, of course, and sharing the screen with Vader, Oscar pretty much stole the trailer for me.

It’s odd but Oscar probably, and Vader definitely, got more screen time than Amy Adams in the trailer - and she’s one of the key stars of the piece. Who are they marketing this to? What sort of role have they saddled her with that they now want to hide it from their target audience?

This new trailer also suggests that the products in the gift shop come to life, as well as the exhibits, with a clip that features a little load of Einstein bobble heads put to task in solving some kind of logic quandary.

The remainder of the trailer was pretty much business as usual. The film appears to be at least as amusing as the first, which really isn’t very, but with a bonus muppet who, trashcan stench or not, certainly isn’t to be sniffed at.

Makes sense considering there was a Star Wars exhibit and a Jim Henson exhibit at the Smithsonian. The SW exhibit was called The Magic of Myth and JH was Jim Henson's Fantastic World.
  • just curious, what about copyright issues? Did the studio have to pay a small fee to have images of Darth Vader (owned by Lucas' film company) and Oscar the Grouch (owned by a different company) appear in the film? Or aren't they worried about being sued for copyright infringement? Would like to hear an answer, thanks.

Just a guess here...Lucasfilm owns Vader, but has always dealt with FOX - the distributer of this film. Oscar is owned by Children's Television Workshop, a non-profit PBS related outfit, so I'm guessing they (FOX) got some type of licensing deal. I'm certain that FOX got all the usage rights squared away before filming. One lesson learned from Watchmen - FOX has an alert legal department.
  • oh okay, that sounds like the most reasonable answer. thanks!

I saw Carol Spinney this weekend and he said he had a role in the upcoming movie, and as the voice of Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch, I'm sure he's not doing anything that the CTW isn't authorizing.

Hmmm, did the first movie ever showed that it effects paintings? It'd be cool to see the Stephen Colbert portrait come to life.
  • Holy shit. That would be absolutely amazing.
  • Tokyo Brawler
Colbert is already in the movie if you watch the trailer. He shouts "GO!"
  • You know, Indiana Jones' jacket and whip is in the Smithsonian. When this movie was first announced, I thought for sure Indiana Jones was going to be in it. But Darth Vader? That's awesome.
  • Amy Adams
I have been to the Smithsonian, and they do in fact have an Oscar the Grouch puppet on exhibit there. However I cannot remember which building at Smithsonian complex I toured.
  • very cool indeed.
can we expect these trailers online sometime soon? today perhaps?
  • They played the trailer tonight during House (might have been 24, not sure exactly. It was between 8 and 10 on Fox though) so I imagine it will be online by tomorrow.

Brendon, was there a trailer for rotf?
  • I was going to ask the same thing... I know you hate Michael Bay, but still was it there or not?
  • Goobity
Vader was awesome in Indian In The Cupboard. He fought a T-Rex in that one.

    B)

  • hahah I was just going to write about that. You know they put that shot in every freaking trailer and, as a kid, I was so stoked to see it. Of course, when I finally saw the film I was SO disappointed.
  • Jetpackman89
Yea he was badass, and i'm not really surprised. even robo cop made an appearance in that movie.
  • mmm
Maybe you guys should take your heads out of your asses and look around at the world before you put up your snarky posts. The Smithsonian does, in fact, have those displays.

They paid $500,000 just to use the Smithsonian's name. So they probably didn't have too much reluctance to pay for Vader and Oscar the Grouch.
  • IronJ146
Haha, thanks for putting it after the jump even though Peter didn't hesitate to spoil it on Twitter. :D (j/k, Peter)
  • Sounds ok to me. I think that they might be trying to get some humor from the adults who are taking their kids to watch this. I mean who doesn't want to see Darth Vader in this film?
  • They probably thought about using Indiana Jones, but then Crystal Skulls came out and they decided against it.

Everytime I read a comment or review from Brendon, it feels like I should take a bunch of Downers, sit in a bath tub of cold water and then drop a toaster in. Is there anything he likes?
  • Mattalica
Brendans writing is so mundane, bland, sober, boring, unflattering to the projects he reports on...his articles make me hesitate coming back here and just going to cinematical where the writers are spry and humorous...I had criticism for David chen a week or so ago and he emailed me and was super nice and took rmthe crtique in stride and his work will probably benefit for being a good interactive talented writer...but this brendan guy seems hopeless...his reviews are dreadful and pete shouldn't give him many more chances....this is not, " trashing slashfilm in their own house"....it's just my opinion bc if I'm bored with a persons writing style, it probably won't be just me....
  • It does effect paintings - that can be seen in the same trailer too.
  • No.
  • First off Brendon, I've seen that scene in a few televesion commercials in the States.

Second, it's not a rotating exhibit on Star Wars or Sesame Street. At the National Museum of American History at the Smithsonian, they have a Popular Entertainment section wherein there are any number of rotating popular culture related items on display. I was there two months ago and Kermit the Frog, Dorothy's red slippers, and Roberto Clemente's Pirates jersey were all on display.

As an aside, the exhibit itself is a real bummer though because it is a tiny room with just a few rotating items (when I visited years ago in high school they had Archie Bunker's chair and Norm's bar stool from Cheers on display) and you have to wait about 30 minutes to walk into a tiny room and see whatever 10-12 items are on display.
