First Look: John Wells’ The Company Men

the company men

Maria Bello and Craig T Nelson have joined the independent drama The Company Men. I haven’t written about this film on /Film yet, so I thought I’d take the opportunity with this last minute casting news.

Written and directed by John Wells, the film tells the story of three men trying to survive a round of corporate downsizing at a major company, and how that affects them, their families and communities over the course of one year. Ben Affleck, Tommy Lee Jones, Kevin Costner, Chris Cooper and Rosemarie DeWitt have already been cast.

Affleck plays a successful career man, Dewitt plays his wife, Costner plays his drywall installer brother-in-law, Cooper plays a blue-collar worker who is losing his job, Nelson plays a CEO of the global conglomerate, Jones plays a senior partner in the firm,  and Bello plays the veep of human resources who is forced to fire Affleck.

This is the feature directorial debut of Wells, who is best known for writing and producing hundreds of episodes of both ER and The West Wing. A lot of people are interested to see what he will be able to do with a feature film. The movie began filming earlier this month in Boston. It’s also worth mentioning that eight-time Academy Award nominated cinematographer Roger Deakins is shooting the film.

  • They were shooting scenes with Ben Affleck right outside the offices where my mother works last week. (Federal and High Streets outside Pete's Coffee Shop in Boston). She got to see the location shooting for most of the morning and even picked out Roger Deakins. It was quite a thrill when I told her she got to see in person the man who was the cinematographer on one of her favorite films "Kundun". ;)
  • It's about time Craig T Nelson got of bed! Nice to see him back in the Sh*t.

I met Craig T Nelson on a flight from Boston to San Francisco a little over a week ago. He's taller than I expected, and not that nice either.
  • Did you guys happen to exchange any words? What makes you think he wasn't a nice guy?

It's good that Ben Affleck is doing his part to help in tough economic times and is only taking roles where he can keep using the same suit and overcoat. After filming all they have to do is get it dry cleaned and forward it on to his next assignment.
  • Hes really good with the overcoat.

Im a big fun of he's films.
  • Very INTERESTING cast. It looks like Ben Affleck's recent movie decisions have been made around wether or not he'll be wearing a suit the entire time.

I'm intrigued by this project. I'm a huge fan of his TV stuff so I think this has a ton of potential.
  • COME WITH IT NOW
I don't know. Afflect is in it. That pancake head sucks.
  • Seems like they have an excellent cast along with a director that has some experience. This sounds like one of those movies I might check out if it looks good.

A portion of the film, The Company Men was filmed at my parent's house in Quincy. It was awesome. Big Ben and Kevin Costner were very approachable and nice. There is a great living room scene and a backyard barbecue scene where myself and my sister stood 10 feet away in the neighbor's backyard. We watched the entire process. It was awesome. They are welcome back anytime for any project.
