Robert Rodriguez Talks Predators

rodriguez grindhouse

I know what you’re thinking: “Not another blog post about Rodriguez’s new Predator movie?!” I said it so you don’t have to. Lets move on.

Robert Rodriguez sat down and answered some questions for AICN regarding the recently announced Predator reboot Predators. The filmmaker confirmed that 20th Century Fox co-president of production Alex Young became excited about a Predator reboot after discovering a Predator sequel treatment Rodriguez had written 15 years ago. It is unclear right now if the original treatment will be used as a basis for the film, but since that was why Rodriguez was brought on board to carry the project, I’d be surprised if they didn’t use some of the core ideas.

“What I’d like to do with it is expand on ideas I dreamt up back in the original treatment, that had really expanded on the universe both the Predators and other species live in. We’d create new otherworldly characters while not taking away from the draw our main Predator has.”

No writer or director have been hired for the project, but the plan is for Rodriguez to produce the film at the Austin-based Troublemaker Studios so that Rodriguez “can feel free to walk to the PREDATORS soundstage, pick up a camera and co-shoot the coolest scenes.” I really wonder what kind of a director is going to be comfortable with that kind of producer collaboration. You can read the full interview on AICN.

i'm just not enthused about this at all. they should just let the dead horse lie.

The Predator series doesn't need a reboot. I mean, it never needed a sequel, but it has (a horrible) one! I guess this is going to head down the same road. Hopefully it won't be bad, but we'll see. :

I am fairly optimistic about the new movie, at least someone like Rodriguez is involved, the jokes that the last 2 crossover films were, need to be erased from our collective minds with something that holds up the standard of the original.
  • Hey, I remember you...
  • Haha. Nice one.
  • Ugh... if Rodriguez wants to shoot this at Troublemaker, that means it's going to be all greenscreen... I'm calling it, time of death on Predators, 8:55pm.
  • Yeah, it doesn't sound promising if this is all going to be in a stage. To be honest, I'm not really sold on the idea. I think the original film is really fun, but everything that follows it has been pretty bad. Couldn't we have something original instead?
Also, for some reason, it's starting to annoy me that Rodriguez keeps talking about all of these projects, but is moving so slowly to get them happening.
  • I actually liked the second Predator, but neither of the AvPs. And I wouldn't mind another Predator movie, just not from a guy who has neither worked on something that isn't his or prefers a greenscreen stage.

It's sad, really, Robert Rodriguez is actually one of the reasons why I originally wanted to get into filmmaking, he was my role model. Now he's just kind of this guy who makes random B-movies that appear to be A-movies :(

I agree with you on your first part. I really like P2. Wasnt the best movie but i really enjoyed it. AVP was so fucking horrible!!!
  • Weyland_Yutani
Exactly. I'm really bummed that Rodriguez has gone down this road. Wishing him luck, but I'm not excited about this at all.
  • That's really disturbing. Part of the greatness that is the original Predator was the amazing on-location sites. You actually believed a Predator would find himself at home in that mess of a hot humid jungle.
  • I'll rent it at the most, sounds kind of dumb.

Aliens vs Predator 2 was kind of corny as well. I just don't see this working..at all.
  • This shit sounds abysmal

    yawn
  • The_Kid
I can't wait until a trailer comes out for this and everyone is all excited for it, those are some of the best days, because then you see how full of crap everyone is.
  • Jack Spade
    This is bull sh!t.
I say keep it simple and stay away from green screens.
They need to get John McTiernan to direct this sequel. Have the U.S. Govement hire a special team to find an object that landed on the Jungle of Brazil. For the team they need to get ALL of the actors from the Sylvester Stallone the Expendables. That's what made the original classic. Arnolds Team and the Predator in the jungle. Why fu^k with that formula.
  • Weyland_Yutani
My thoughts exactly. The first worked so well because of the locations, the badass team and Arnold, at his best, going one on one vs. the hunter.
  • The best thing about predators? Its plural!
  • I guess this is good news. I actually would like to learn more about where the Predators come from and why they're always hanging out here on Earth. I really liked the one scene in Predator 2 with Danny Glover of all the different kinds of skulls the predator was keeping as trophies.
  • Krazy Joe
Now this is some exciting news! I can't wait to see it!

As a fan of RR, I have to agree this is craziness!

Give us the next Sin City...what happened to Red Sonja? Jesus, Robert, tie up your loose ends before traversing the road of "Predator Reboot".

    No. Please, God, no.
  • As a huge Predator and Aliens fan I am excited that Rodriguez is handling this. I would like him to direct though so I'm kind of confused on that part. And I really hope to GOD!!!! that Fox isn't the company behind it. But I think Predator and Aliens as well needs some redemption after the terrible AVP movies that have come out. I'd love to see new technology added to GOOD Predator movie.

    Make a sequel you bastard!!
    fuck the reboots!.. damn
  • Oh boy I can't wait for new lines such as "get to the choppers!" Two predators requires moar chopper.

SIn City was okay, but flawed. The El Mariachi films are a bit crap frankly, esp OUATIM (what's going on at the end), Spy Kids crappy (unless you're 6) and Planet Terror was just abysmal. So, I'm not too keen on Rodriguez trashing the Predator any more than the series has already been trashed. But at least this means he hasn't got time to bastardise Barbarella. His films are cheap, they make their money back, so he gets to do what he wants - Tarantino's buddy he may be, but Tarantino he ain't.
  • Lets keep the main thing, the main thing... Rodriguez is a Master when it comes to his craft. There is no one out there in the industry like him. He can write, direct, produce, film, his own movies.. plus he makes his own music. He has a style that reaches lots of movie lovers that other directors can't. I agree what was said up before... As soon as the trailer for "Predators" show's on screen.. most of the people here are gonna be saying in their head, "OMG... That looks Bad Ass...."
  • love robert rodriguez (for the kids stuff and the adult stuff) - but kinda feel that he is a bit too campy for a predator movie...
