Initially the screenplay for Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood called for Russell Crowe to play a dual role as both the Sheriff of Nottingham and Robin Hood, but that idea was dropped early on. Scott decided to go a different direction. He has said in interviews that the Sheriff character is “less important”, and that the main villain of the story is actually the country of France. After countless casting announcements, not one mention of the actor who would play the Sheriff, even though there was mention of the character in the official plot synopsis. I wasn’t really interested in many of the news stories tonight so I decided to do some digging, and have found the answer.

34-year-old British actor Matthew Macfadyen, best known as Fitzwilliam Darcy in the 2005 film version of Pride and Prejudice, has supossedly been cast in the role of the Sherrif of Nottingham. Macfadyen revealed that he had been cast in “Nottingham” (the previous title of the project) at a public Masterclass event on April 17th. The actor’s agent finally confirmed the role details with the Darcylicious fansite. Macfadyen most recently appeared as John Birt in Frost/Nixon. His credits also include Death at a Funeral, Incendiary and the BBC mini-series Little Dorrit.

The main cast has already been announced: Russell Crowe as Robin Hood, Cate Blanchett as Lady Marion, Vanessa Redgrave as Queen Eleanor, Mark Strong as Sir Godfrey, Oscar Issac as King John, Léa Seydoux as French Princess Isabella, and the Merry Men: Scott Grimes as Will Scarlet, Kevin Durand as Little John, Alan Doyle as Allan Adayle.

Official Plot Synopsis: Crowe stars as the legendary figure known by generations as Robin Hood, whose exploits have endured in popular mythology and ignited the imagination of those who share his spirit of adventure and righteousness. In 13th century England, Robin and his band of marauders confront corruption in a local village and lead an uprising against the crown that will forever alter the balance of world power. And whether thief or hero, one man from humble beginnings will become an eternal symbol of freedom for his people.

The untitled Robin Hood adventure chronicles the life of an expert archer, previously interested only in self-preservation, from his service in King Richard’s army against the French. Upon Richard’s death, Robin travels to Nottingham, a town suffering from the corruption of a despotic sheriff and crippling taxation, where he falls for the spirited widow Lady Marion (Blanchett), a woman skeptical of the identity and motivations of this crusader from the forest. Hoping to earn the hand of Maid Marion and salvage the village, Robin assembles a gang whose lethal mercenary skills are matched only by its appetite for life. Together, they begin preying on the indulgent upper class to correct injustices under the sheriff.

With their country weakened from decades of war, embattled from the ineffective rule of the new king and vulnerable to insurgencies from within and threats from afar, Robin and his men heed a call to ever greater adventure. This unlikeliest of heroes and his allies set off to protect their country from slipping into bloody civil war and return glory to England once more.

  • Wasn't this supposed to be a different take on Robin Hood, with the Sherriff being the good guy? That was a much more interesting film that this appears to be becoming.

I agree. The different take on Robin Hood sounded more appealing because it had the possibility of being something we'd never seen before. I'm sure Ridley Scott can churn out a really good Robin Hood movie, but it seems like the uniqueness of it has been scrapped.
  • Gennaro Gattuso
Couldn't agree more. I'm baffled as to how anyone could be excited about this film at this point. Another generic Robin Hood movie - what's the point?

There are also a number of plot points within that synopsis that have me thinking this is going to be another conservative tract from right-wing Ridley. But I guess we'll have to wait and see how that pans out.

Given that Macfadyen is generally cast in supporting roles, this appears to lend credence to earlier reports that Nottingham will not be the main antagonist in the film. If nothing else, I think this latest iteration of the Robin Hood legend should be an interesting one.
  • but I don't think The Sherrif was ever the main antagonist. He was Robin's arch nemesis, but in the long haul, it has always been King/Prince John.

Is "do some digging" the new euphemism for "Googling"?
  • Zing!

Macfadyen may be cast in supporting roles in Hollywood movies, but he has had several leading roles in the UK, including Death at a Funeral, Little Dorrit, and the incredible and haunting In My Father's Den (which was actually out of New Zealand).

In spite of the fact that I fear the film may suffer an identity crisis having been through so many radical changes, I have high hopes for another RS/RC collaboration.

That's just sad. From a project of "Notingham" to "Crowe plays both parts" to "It's just your regular RH movie".

    Fuck Hollywood. It's just sad...
  • At least the cast is great, so should still be good.
  • actually he's a damn good choice.
  • Come on MacFadyen is best known as Tom from Spooks! I am disappointed with the way the plot looks. When I first heard about it I thought it would be like the Jackal, where Robin Hood was hired by the "Merry men" and medieval terrorist organisation to kill Prince John. Only the Sherrif of Nottingham could catch him. Or something like that. Portraying Robin as a bit of a dick doesn't make the film sound that exciting.

Geez - how could I forget Tom Quinn!!?? Thanks, Nish. Incidentally, Spooks is known as MI-5 in the US and is currently airing on PBS - they are still in season 2, so you can catch Macfadyen as TQ easily.
  • I meant Day of the Jackal, but I guess the Jackal is just as valid. But I guess the Jackal is a more recent reference for me, as I want born when the Day of the Jackal was released.
  • Change the title back to Nottingham. It was so much more badass.
  • Max
Brilliant actor, look forward to seeing his take on the Sheriff.
  • I was really hoping they would let Russel Crowe do his thing with both roles but it sounds like it would have been a waste of time since the character is not that important in this interpretation of the story.
  • This far out I already know I am probably never going to bother seeing this. You know how you can just tell these things sometimes?
  • Ender
I am hoping that Scott makes THE Robin Hood movie, as I have been very disappointed in previous tellings. So, in that regard, I don't mind him sticking to the tried and true.
  • topheavy
Hey Ridley, please make another Sci-Fi movie I am begging you. PLEASE.
  • I liked Gladiator a whole hell of a lot. So, naturally I am going to see Robin Hood. I love Matthew Macfadyen as well and he's just icing on the cake for me cause I refuse to see movies like Pride and Prejudice but I will go see Robin Hood. So, now I'll get to see him in a movie. But I did watch The Way We Live Now and loved that. But I can't stand Pride and Prejudice.
