Toy Story

Pixar didn’t send Tom Hanks a screenplay for Toy Story 3, they showed him the entire movie.

Hanks reveals to Empire Magazine that he sat in a theater with Tim Allen and John Ratzenberger and watched an “a complete story reel of the entire movie.” The reel was comprised of moving storyboards, voices recorded by Pixar animators with some temp music and sound effects.” His reaction was “‘This is great, let’s get to work!’” And work he has. Hanks has already had three complete recording sessions for the film, and will probably have one more.

The initial story reel for a Pixar movie is usually much different (plot-wise) than the final product. Toy Story 3 screenwriter Michael Arndt explained to Variety last year that “Writing a script at Pixar is like trying to build a house, and every six weeks somebody comes and throws a hand grenade into it. You’ve got to build it really strong to survive this continual assault every six weeks. And if it’s weak, if it’s flimsy, it’s just going to get blown apart.”

I’ve always wished that Pixar would include their early story reels as extras on their DVDs. With the extra space on Blu-ray releases, it’s more possible now than ever. It would be very interesting to watch a version of a film that never was, like the infamous original Toy Story cut which almost resulted in the death of Pixar. But now that the company is Disney-owned, there are branding issues to take into consideration. So, as cool as it would be I’m sure we’ll never see one of these early story reels.

  • I remember hearing that they use popular music to evoke certain emotions in the story cuts, and that that is the reason they can't release them, due to the rights issues.

I wouldn't mind seeing them with replacement tracks though, just to see them.

Those story reels are partially viewable in the doc "the story of pixar" which was included on the pixar shorts DVD. Pixar really hates those old story reels and really half of what makes pixar pixar, is it's superb writing process, I wonder if they'd be ok with sharing that with everyone who buys a copy of their movies. could be considered a trade secret.

Man, seeing another Toy Story film, especially if it turns out good, is going to really pull the nostalgia strings hard in theaters. This could be an incredible experience in the works.

While the Toy Story movies aren't my favorites from Pixar, anymore at least, it'll be really interesting to see how they come to the project with all the new techniques and technologies they've developed in the past decade. I think it'll be just a teensy-bit mind-blowing.

ii think exactly the same, i would love to see the first reel of the movie, after i see the finish movie, is in part the reason for me to download the wolverine leek, i whant to see the finish movie first and then, the movie without finish. ( something that i would love to see in dvds, or blue ray, but never going to happen) or maybe when they shoot different endings, that most of the times, never goes as extra in a dvd.

enough about hanks, what did tim allen have to say - or is he willing to say yes to anything at this point? nah, i kid i kid. i do like me some tim allen. galaxy quest is a classic. but i imagine that writing a script for pixar is much like trying to market a disney film in general. requires a shit ton of hand grenades before we get to the final product. probably twice as many hand grenades are required for a pixar film, since so much is riding on their films being oscar worthy animation.

Woody is so much better than that stupid Buzz Lightsick
  • Did Hanks really need to see anything before signing on? I mean really? Its like free money.
  • RE: TheGreenMalice
OH please you all act just like it is not hard work to put ur self out there it is important that any actor voice or other wise knows what there getting into before they sing anything like what if hew did not agree with this sequel or if it was going to interfere with another contract or even a personal matter. Just because it's Disney that dose not mean its going to be perfect, we are all human after all.
It is NOT Free money it is a lot of work. he has to memorize most of the script and there’s talking for that long plus staying in character, also if an actor/actress makes to many mistakes there is usually a dock in their pay or a fine they would have to pay. Voice acting is probably harder than regular acting he has to match his voice pattern exactly to the animation bet u could not do that, not to sound rude or any thing but don’t be hating on others for there success! Its really cool that they all got to watch a story real instead of just reading a script It would be really cool if they released that real so we can compare maybe they will put it in the DVD or post it on the web. I wonder if we all sent Email request they would be more likely to do so???
I’m so glad Pixar and Disney got together for the Toy Story movies they are good and the two companies work well together. I am sad to hear that Pixar is not on board with #3 I’m sure Disney did a good job on there own but it probably would be better if they where working together. Regardless, I am looking forward to its release!!
  • NICE. Animatics rule. I've gotten to see some of theirs and there fucking awesome. Toy story 3 eh? Why not? the first 2 were great. I'm not going to be happy until Incredibles 2 though.
  • Couldn't be more wrapped that a new Toy Story is on the way. It has always been my favorite Pixar effort.
  • " infamous original Toy Story cut which almost resulted in the death of Pixar."

    What?

when toy story was first getting pitched to disney, Pixar had liek two months to get a full pitch togetehr with a basic script. teh result was a movie that ahd an assinine lead, a lot of negative humor and wholly an unmarketable film(according to pixar and teh then disney head). Disney said everything has to change within a month or we're pulling the devlopment budget. So at that point pixar had half teh time to almsot completly retool the movie.
They did it of course but it was a huge undermining and supposedly lasseter didn't leave the office more than a few times during that hell month. you should check out that "story of pixar" doc it's terrific.

As detailed in Leslie Iwerk's "The Pixar Story", the original animatic was made with executives' story & character "input", with typically disastrous results. Lasseter & co. reworked the film to their own tastes, and the result is the film we all know and love.
  • Have you seen "The Pixar Story" documentary extra on the Wall-E DVD? It showed an early animatic cut of Toy Story that had Woody as an egotistical and mean-hearted doll rather than the Woody we know today. Disney was willing to shut down production on the movie once they saw that early cut.
  • As soon as I go Blu-Ray here soon i'm gonna pick up Wall-E and i'll check it out. Thanks for the info.

So...how are they going to get past the fact that Jim Varney is dead?
  • I'm sure that they can find someone to do a Jim Varney impression....
  • This should be good. Pixar never disappoints. One question though... Is this actually a sequel to the first two movies or a Toy Story "reboot" to fit in with the Hollywood trend? =)
  • PapaSmurf
It's a sequel. A picture has been released showing Andy's college dorm room.
  • That was really just a joke, but thanks for clarifying.
  • evan luzi
you can see a lot of the story reels on the wall-e blu ray with the deleted scenes
  • matt
Can we have The Incredibles 2 please?
  • I went to a Pixar exhibit at the MoMA a few years back and they had a 10-15 minute looped animatic of the scene in The Incredibles where the son is being chased through the jungles by those guys in the blade-ship things. It was pretty phenomenal how much 2D animation they do before even starting the CG. In fact, it looked like it probably would've been easier for them just to make a hand-drawn film. Also, they had the Toy Story zoetrope on display and it's truly one of the most amazing things I've ever witnessed firsthand. Y'all should Google that if you haven't seen it.

at least they're finally making this movie.

I'll have to check out the Toy Story Mean Woody thing. I'm sure its on Youtube somewhere.
  • Was there any possibility of doing this movie without Tom Hanks? I mean honestly I bet they would have paid him anything to get him on board. Without the voice of Woody, you have no movie. I suppose they could have tried looping old tracks or impersonations but it just wouldn't have been the same and the audience would have felt it.

I wonder how many times they had to ask Tim Allen to do this or if he just called them....
  • That's amazing. I bet this is going to be a good film whenever it gets released. I was thinking that it's going to take a very long time for this movie to get made but it sounds like they've been working on it for awhile now.
  • Isn't it a little insulting to an actor to show them a rough acting guide, intonation and everything, as opposed to a screenplay?
  • Sues
Is no one else psyched that Michael Arndt, of Little Miss Sunshine fame, wrote the screenplay? Pixar is the only animation studio that not only gets star voice actors, but star writers. Remember that Joss Whedon co-wrote the first Toy Story.

I read that the Buzz Lightyear role was actually offered to Billy Crystal first.. I can see the reasoning, the inflection of his voice is just so charming! Here's to hoping he's offered a part this time around as well, I haven't heard much news of him lately.

I can gaurantee that Toy Story 3 will be a huge hit with families all over the world. Just saying the words Toy Story brings everyones attention. If it's not as good as 1 and 2, there is always number 4!...I love disney movies and will always watch them with or without my kids.
