tmnt

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Co-creator Peter Laird posted a blog post talking about the big announcement last night regarding Mirage Studios making a new live-action TMNT movie. Laird confirms that the inital discussions involve using “hybrid” ninja turtles:

As you may recall from some of my previous comments, our initial discussions regarding the next film had to do with what we were calling a “hybrid” — live action with realistic Turtles rendered in CGI and blended in. This new idea — which, frankly, I am VERY pumped about — will have actors and stunt performers in full Turtle suits for filming in live action. As of right now, there is talk of using CGI to do “face replacement” for the suits so that we can get those great, expressive faces possible with CGI.

Laird also says that they are “very early in the development process” with “no writer or director” yet attached, and have “just started talking about the story”.

two things this movie needs: Krang and the Technodrome
  • deathmetalhero
dont forget rocksteady and bebop. I think they were in the og comics, right?
  • Krang, Rocksteady & Bebop would be awesome additions....since they've never made the screen...I think it would be cool to see it more like the original film rather than the goofball sequels....they should bring back Casey Jones as well!...I'm just glad they're sticking with the suits instead of going full CGI
  • i really like Beblop and Rocksteady but supposedly the creators didn't like them all too well (they were created for the cartoon). That's why they were not featured in Turtles 2 or the new cartoon series. Which sucks because the creators have to understand that the Turtles went beyond the original comics and became something else.

And to people like you and me, Turtle Power is pop culture, not just a violent 80s comic book. They need to realize that.

no, i was growing up in the turtle craze & always preferred the comics.
  • I was under the impression they were in the comics...since when the first movie came out I got the comics and they were already in there...and that was almost a full year before the cartoon...Raphael was the black turtle at that point I think...I think that would be cool for a bit in the movie if he had the black ninja outfit...

I just think we're all forgetting another Vanilla Ice cameo
  • You were reading the Archie comics, based more off of the TMNT cartoon universe. That comic was for kids. The original was published by Mirage, and black and white, and had a grittier look and feel to the comics. I read Archie when I was little, but I also was always seeking out the original Mirage run. I've still got a 3rd printing of the first issue. Archie comics weren't bad though, I liked them a lot as a kid.

Those three most likely won't be in the film since Laird hates them. It's the reason why they weren't in the CGI film. Laird pretty much hates the 1987 toon. The film will probably be more like the 2k3 toon, but more intense, which would be perfect.

Maybe the suits will be done like how they did Wild Things.
  • Since it's a reboot, they definitely need Shredder. I know he's like the Lex Luthor of the Superman films but he's a classic villain for the turtles, I say use him again.
  • Wow this is actually happening. The last post seemed like one of those projects that may or may not actually happen. This gives off more of a founded vibe.
  • Will they bring back the reporter, April?
  • she was in every movie and the cartoon/toys...I'm sure they won't forget her
  • she was in every movie and the cartoon/toys...I'm sure they won't forget her since she's basically the only female character
  • Anna Faris for April O'Neil!
  • if it was a cornball comedy that would make sense...but I think they're going to make it more serious like the original movie...still have humorous moments but not have it a live-action version of the cartoon...using the comic as the source material instead...

Lauren Lee Smith (Pathology, CSI) would make a better April O'Neil

Kowabunga dude! This calls for pepperoni pizza and skateboarding!
  • musicsoup
that's exactly what this movie needs to not have. that type of 'slang' isn't cool anymore and would only dumb this movie down terribly. it can still be marketable to kids without having to be goofy with shit like "cowabunga dude"
  • Oi to the Vey
    COWABUNGA, MusicCoup.

    COWABUNGA FOR LIFE.

    Surfter talk never dies.
  • Lono
I hope this comes off and does well. I still have all of the original comics and wouldn't mind unloading them sometime soon.
  • mayh3m
The minute i hear "Cowabunga" or "Totally Gnarly" in one of the trailers im out..
  • Mayroth
I think they should just use CG turtles. It works great.
  • What part can Baxter the Fly play in all of this?
  • Doug
Rocksteady and Bebop were in Secret of the Ooze.
  • infidelappel
No they weren't. That was Taka and Razar (or something like that.) They were a snapping turtle and a wolf. Bebop is a warthog and Rocksteady is a rhino.
  • Jones
Sweet. I'm excited for this - lots of potential.
  • this movie rocked
The just have to do the same thing as Jonze did with the wild thing and it will be perfect.
  • Demented_Muppet
Especially since Where The Wild Things Are is the Jim Henson Creature Shop, which did the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. It'd come full circle.
  • Geet
Basically what I was going to say as well, suited up with a touch of CGI polish, natch.
  • HOORAY!
  • isn't this news a bit old? anyway, can't wait - I was dissapointed with the CGI in TMNT, mainly because I wanted rubber suits.
  • oh shit i am so ready for this!!! Nostalgia will be shooting out of my ass!!!
  • CyT
The main issue for me with the CGI TMNT movie was that it had lost that 80's comical fun'ness about it and had turned into a 21st century CGI action flick. Thats not turtles. It may have worked for Batman which is an action movie anyways, but you need that whacky comedy to be the main focus of Turtles. I hope they keep that in this version.
  • Ninja_turtle
    what this movie needs:
    no beepop
    no rocksteady
no krang. other utroms are ok though
april is baxter stockman's lab asst.
    baxter is black
Nothing and I mean nothing in common with the ot toon.
everything to do with the official mirage cannon. (vol.1 1-11 mainly)
    no stupid shit for kids.
    a pg-13 rating
all the turtles in red masks
Shredder as the main bad guy
Karai set up as the bad guy in the sequel
Leo and raph should actually cut/stab some foot members instead of losing their weapons in the first 2 seconds of a fight.

I could go on and on....
  • jeremy
ninja turtle you are right on.....
  • The two producers for this live action reboot were at the "drive-in" screening of the original tonight in NYC, as was Kevin Eastman and the 1990 film director Steven Barron. Pretty cool they all showed up on this freezing night. Even cooler that about 800 fans were there and enjoyed the film.
The first one is the only one of the three that holds up as a decent, fun flick. Elias Koteas forever!
  • Excellent news. I really hope this is more in the vein of the 1st movie.
  • It sounds like this is going to be done like Where The Wild Things Are. That movie looks good so I'll assume this will look great too.
  • This is the best news I have heard all day! I made the mistake of getting my hopes up for the latest ninja turtle "reboot" and was sadly disappointed at what I saw. TMNT was not Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles... not even remotely.

They really need to make the right movie this time. Instead of appealing to the 5-10 year old demographic, they need to reach out to the fans of the original comics and cartoon. A more faithful adaption would certainly draw a larger crowd (both those seeking nostalgia and young alike) and give the source material the treatment it deserves.
  • To this day I haven't attempted to watch TMNT, because I knew it wouldn't come close to the 80's versions. I'm pretty excited for this; it sounds like what "Where the Wild Things Are" did with their monsters (I think haha).
  • Ninja_turtle
by 80's versions do you mean the comic book or the cartoon...cuz there wasn't a turtles movie in the 80's.

and if this thing want any chance at success it can not be a light hearted pizza filled joke fest.
  • apt33
Are they actually gonna use Bebop and Rocksteady this time instead of those retarded Tokka and Razaar (aka cheap knockoffs of B&R)?
  • LaFluer
no what this movie does in fact need is bebop, rocksteady and krang. why would you continue to leave out some of the best tmnt villains, and dont tell me they arent important or they are too cartoony and for kids, cuz thats garbage. done right all the classic characters can fit into a dark pg-13 movie
  • all they need is some young actors to play them.
  • Mr. Sleeper
I keep forgetting that Nick/Viacom brought the rights of the TMNT so the future of this film is uncertain . However, I hope that the film that would film will stay true to adult nature of the comics. I also hope this film will take a lesson from James Cameron's Avatar and Spike Jonze's Where The Wild Things Are to create a film that combines revolutionary special effects with storyteling.
