Spider-Man 4 In 3D?

Amy Pascal and Michael Lynton are the current co-chairs of Sony Pictures Entertainment and Forbes have tagged them for a very interesting interview on the future of the motion picture business. Let’s get to the holy-moly, though: Pascal quite clearly suggests that Sam Raimi’s next Spider-Man could be shot in 3D.

Actually, in context, it sounds more than an idle suggestion, it sounds like a real, solid possibility, if not tentative plan… though Lynton also offers a reason why the idea might be controversial. Quotes to come after the break.

Forbes asked is they see 3D as the future of the industry, and Pascal replied:

For sure. You’re not going to see a lot of animated movies that aren’t in 3D any more. I think Jeffrey Katzenberg preached that and he was right.

Yes - but whether or not it was a self fulfilling prophecy is another issue. On the subject of Katzenberg, Lynton added:

I didn’t understand what he was talking about until I saw Monsters vs. Aliens. It’s a very immersive experience. It’s like seeing perspective for the first time. I think it is something different and terrific and a new group of directors will have to figure out how to do it.

Back to Pascal:

I think James Cameron’s new movie [Avatar] could change the world. I think everyone is in anticipation thinking it’s going to be like Star Wars. It’s going to change the way you consume entertainment. I don’t know that it will ever be the way you see dramas, but I can’t say anymore that it won’t be.

So Forbes go for the kill and ask if Sony are considering any live action in 3D, and even specifically asks “What about Spider-Man 4?”.

Pascal says the crucial two words:

Could be.

Lynton adds:

People are paying a premium to see movies in 3-D and that’s a very big deal. It’s never been done before that someone says you have to pay more to see Spider-Man than a romantic comedy.

So… there you have it. The next question, I suppose, is whether or not Sam Raimi would want to make the film in 3D. And then the next question after that would be whether or not they’d let him make it in plain old 2D anyway, if they’d made their minds up. It’s not like he was left with free reign on Spider-Man 3, is it?

Personally, I hope to see Spider-Man 4 in 3D.

Also up for discussion in the interview is the state of the DVD market. Pascal’s comments there made for a frank insight into perspective of a studio head. When asked if she though DVD profits would stay down for good, here’s what she said:

What you see happening is that every time a new technology or means of distribution show up, about every decade or so, there’s an enormous growth in the business because there’s another way to exploit the library. We just went through one with DVD. Now we need the next one. I don’t mean to sound Pollyannaish but there’s always a next one.

And then, Forbes asked if Blu-Ray would make up for the shortfall, so she replied:

That’s the hope, but I’m a little skeptical. The question is whether people will really replace their libraries. Plus it would appear there’s already price erosion in Blu-ray, so we’re not making the price point we originally hoped for. The entertainment industry at large has pretty much given away high definition to consumers. They haven’t really charged a premium for it on television. That makes consumers more likely to buy Blu-ray but less likely to pay a premium for it.

Just work out a business model where you can cope with me paying a reasonable price, okay? Perhaps spending $300 million on single films isn’t really the best idea, hmmm?

they can put it in 4-D, you couldn't pay me to see another POS movie in that franchise...
  • I can't imagine a better movie in 3D. Maybe a first person perspective of gliding through the city? Yes, please.
  • Infrafan
Seeing how Coraline utilized it to really bring you in, I'm down for it.
  • jones soda
Yes selick set the bar very high.
  • The 3-D shit is getting old. It's fine for an amusement ride at Universal Studios but leave my movies alone.
  • Sarcasm
    no you leave

    I am very excited, IFRAIMETAKETHETAKEFROM2ANDPUT1MOREDIMENSIONSP4WILLBEAHELLOFAMOVIE3DGREATLIKE2DRAGMETOTHIS!
  • I'd prefer to see it in NoCG.
  • Grover Cleavland
I really wish people would stop using the red and green ocular guides when they talk about or plug 3d. It really hurts the public conception of the NEW technology involved. I slapped my face when chuck did its 3d for the super bowl and they tried to plug monsters and aliens with it, THAT'S NOT WHAT 3D IS ANYMORE. Its practically beamed into your head.
  • I agree that the Chuck gimmick was a step backwards, but I can't exactly use the new tech in an image here. Besides - many of the images I use here are tongue in cheek, and I think people get that.
  • Grover Cleavland
Not directed at you Brendon, but when time magazine does a feature on the process and runs the same picture I get perturbed.
  • freemachine
Abso-fucking-lutely! The red/green glasses were a huge mistake when advertising Monsters v. Aliens. I know that the new glasses are too expensive to give away, but c'mon. Better to not confuse the public by promoting new technology with antiquated technology.
  • 3D spiderman sounds good to me... as long as they make it better than 3 I am okay with anything
  • DRF
There's no way I'm paying to see a continuation of the story set up in Spider-Man 3. 3D or otherwise. No f'n way.
  • Justin
Couldn't care less about Spiderman 4 (I'll still see it), but I'm getting more and more hyped for Avatar.

    *fangirl squeal*

Wait, did I say girl? I meant...aw hell
  • I totally agree. If 3D becomes the norm, our kids will be rendered blind as their sensitive, developing eyes are subject to 3D talking animals. Meanwhile, theaters will start handing out Tylenol with the 3D glasses. With an optional handkerchief so we can wipe the blood dripping from our eyes as we view James Cameron's newest 3D with Smell-O-Vision feature enhanced with Nat-U-ral Touch Sensory-vision.

    In short. 3D = ridiculous.
  • this spiderman is going to turn into what batman was after batman returns (batman forever, batman & robin). they keep coming out and just keep getting less enjoyable and harder to watch. whos slated to direct the spiderman reboot in 2025?
  • I'm down for another Spider-Man sequel and I wouldn't mind it being in 3D.

People have to get over Spider-Man 3. Everyone was stroking Raimi's ego during part two yet completely turned on him for part three. Besides, it wasn't THAT bad.
  • Ryan T
Agreed. Spider-man 3 wasn't that bad! Did it have plot holes and way too many coincidences? Yes, but it was a good film. People just need to get over it. It's not like they butchered the franchise ex- X3. I never really understood the hate for the dancing sequences. As I understood, they were supposed to be funny and awkward. People clamoring that the 2 dancing sequences ruined the movie are just ridiculous. You're watching a movie about a guy with spider powers.....
  • Disagree hardcore. Spidey 3 was an enormous disappointment. Incoherent plot, inexplicable pacing, strange casting choices (I like Topher Grace and Ron Howard's kid just fine, but not for those roles)... and the whole deal with Venom showing up so late and then kinda being crammed into the climax... I didn't mind the dancing sequences. It was the made-on-the-fly story that sucked ass. I think Raimi's an awesome director, I'll watch anything he does--but I'd rather watch that dumbass movie he did with Costner on the pitcher's mound than this hunk of crap.

All of that said, I expect Raimi and the Spider-Man producers to rally this time around. I'd love to see it in 3-D. I think that would be hella cool. But it's much, much more important they get a Spidey 2 quality script than anything else.
  • it's a long time away. lets get rumors going going about the villians going before we get into 3D or not.
  • 3D or not, why don't we focus on the story more this time around... Let's not make this one garbage
  • Mayroth
I probably wont be seeing this anyways. Spiderman 3 really ruined the franchise for me.
  • Sheriff Dewey
    MC: "Somebody say "gim-mick!"
    Crowd: "Gim-mick!"
  • 3d crap
    3d
When Avatar bombs trust me you will never hear the word 3d after that. Studios only go with what works and this will not. 3d is for theme park rides.
  • Solid
No I think with the boom of HD media, theaters will need to upgrade the theatrical experience and 3d is definitely the next step in cinema's evolution. Remember, there used to be a time when people shunned recorded voices and sounds in movies because they thought it was distracting. Oh man, I really got all academic there didn't I. someone give me a plus for that.
  • your#1fan
wow i wonder what crap looks like in 3-D on a giant screen? i vote for paris hilton to replace dunst and really run the series into the shitter
  • Trent
Wow, there sure are a lot of morons on here... Geez, and I though AICN was bad...

    dear jesus:

please make the disease that this horrible 3-D gimmick is spreading go away. our beloved spidey franchise is already on the ropes, and while we have an opportunity to let raimi do his thing, people still want to force his hand & make him do shit that just doesn't belong in the film. you see jesus, some of us just don't learn from our past mistakes, or the present successes we have made.

thanks for listening jesus, it'd be nice if everyone just realized that a successful comic film should be taken seriously and not hipster-techy-gimmicky, but for some reason people just don't wanna lear from their mistakes. and remember that these are the same folks who called to force raimi's hand on the whole venom issue. please bless sam raimi that he may not be burdened with this horrible affliction of outside stupidity yet again. amen.
  • Justin Craig
Amen my brother! The 3rd Spiderman film was so damn convoluted it made me want to jump inside the screen and rip the entire Venom story line right out. And changing Uncle Ben's killer?? Fucking retarded!! i can't believe they got away with pissing all over the franchise the way they did. They should have saved Venom for the 4th installment or just gotten rid of Sandman altogether. Either way, I'm not exactly stoked for the new movie; especially now that they're using that God awful 3-D gimmick. Yuck!!
  • 790
They release it in 3-D and I'll wait for the dvd. Screw you Sony !!!!!
  • What's most disappointing is how the coverage media has latched on the 3D so badly and have bought into the idea that it makes a film somehow 'better'? I'll still prefer to read about an intriguing synopsis before hearing about the damn format it will be shot in.
  • "Perhaps spending $300 million on single films isn’t really the best idea, hmmm?".. co-signed

3D or not, just make a good movie. ..masks ON, MJ minimal, 2 villains MAX, and NO.. I repeat NO dancing.
  • I might have to agree with Michael Bay on the 3D aspect of live action movies. I hear alot of talking about 3D and the possibilities of it but I don't see anyone doing it. Of course I'm talking about big budget blockbuster films and not horror films or animated films. I doubt this will happen because Spider-man can't take a hit to it's fan base with a gimmick like this.
