David Slade in Talks To Direct Eclipse

Update: Summit Entertainment has confirmed that David Slade is now officially signed on the direct Eclipse.

The list of names in line to direct the third Twilight film Eclipse is getting stranger every week. The list of filmmakers rumored to be in consideration has included Drew Barrymore, Juan Antonio Bayona (The Spanish filmmaker who directed The Orphanage), Paul Weitz (Director of American Pie and About a Boy, brother of New Moon director Chris Weitz). Nikki Finke is now reporting that Summit Entertainment is also talking with Hard Candy and 30 Days of Night director David Slade.

While this may seem like an extremely odd choice at first, it really isn’t that strange if you think about it. Slade’s directorial debut Hard Candy worked mostly due to the strong yet vulnerable female performance of Ellen Page. And 30 Days of Night proved that Slade could create some fantastic visuals in a genre film. And it appears that performances and visuals are two major aspects that Summit is trying to address with the sequels.

  • I think it's crazy that they're trying to get these movies out so quickly. I guess because they want their actors to look young throughout the franchise history unlike the Potter franchise.
  • Yeah... I guess the whole Twilight 'saga' takes place in a span of about 2 1/2 years versus the seven years in Harry Potter, and half of the characters in Twilight are never supposed to age (versus they ALL are supposed to in Harry Potter)... However I tend to agree with what others have said. They are trying to rush them out to capitalize on how popular the series is right now cause they're afraid the fans will lose interest. I am dissapointed - I've been a fan of the book series since 2005 and I haven't lost interest yet, I don't think I am about to... but from all the behind the scenes stuff I've seen of New Moon I have much higher expectations for it than I did for Twilight! Maybe they will all just get better and better (cause let's face it... Twilight wasn't done very well...)
  • I'm not really into the book but the Twilight the movie was alright. I've actually heard from a few people that read the book the movie is laughable, that the whole thing was terrible in quality compared to the quality of the book.

I'm thinking that the Twilight movies should have gotten started earlier because that's when the books were really popular. I mean everyone was talking about them like they were in fact the new Potter series.

Oh yeah, I didn't know the time span of either Twilight or the Potter series. I just thought it was weird that we were suppose to think of the characters in the Potter movies as not to be 8 to 9 years older whenever the franchise is finished.

just as cuaron made the best potter - # 3 - i'd bet slade makes # 3 the best of the twilight series. the guy has mad skills.

not that twilight or slade compares to potter or cuaron..just the number 3 was kinda coincidental.
  • I thought 30 Days of Night was a great genre film. I loved it. While I think he's a really good choice why would Summit hire a direct for part 3 when part 2 under Chris Weitz just started filming. I never seen anything like this. What if Weitz does a great job wouldn't they want him back again?

Most likely because they want to churn these things out faster then your normal run-of-the-mill franchise. Instead of a year/two-year break, I'm pretty sure they want the 3rd film rolling before the end of the year. Basically they don't want to give tweens time to come to their senses.
  • I'm fairly certain Drew Barrymore has offically said she's not directing Eclipse. I thought that meant they had already chosen someone? Guess not... I am glad to hear they are working hard to make sure the special effects don't suck as bad as they did in the first movie...

I hope for Slade's sake that he doesn't take this gig.

Slade is a proficient filmmaker. Period. He has a nice style. His background in commercials and music videos validate that as well. I don't see this as something befitting Slade, but if he feels it is, then great. But if he directs this - and hopefully gets some accolades - I'd like to see him have a chance at better, more mature projects.
And he's good with his actors. So, again, if this is something he wants/feels he should do for whatever reason, then I'd say Summit would benefit from having him at the helm.

As long as it keeps him away from Neverwhere, that's fine with me. I so wish Alfonso Cuaron would make it.
  • This director actually makes a lot of sense especially considering the story of Eclipse and the climax at the end. Yes, Slade would be a good candidate.
  • MELI DELI I LOVE YOU!
  • Are you guys getting paid to feature updates to the twilight franchise? oh wait some people are actually responding to this drudge? WTF!?

I love Ellen Page in Hard Candy. Too bad 30 Days of Night was so-so. David Slade doing Twilight? I might be interested. hahaha

Better than Juan Antonio Bayona wasting his eye on this series.

This is a hopelessly optimistic question for anyone on the /Film staff who can answer: if one submitted an application to be a news writer, around when will discussions be had with contenders for the spot? Thanks.
  • The last day to turn in applications is April 24, so I'd assume around there.
  • I just glanced at the title and thought that you were saying that David Spade was in talks to direct this movie. I almost shit myself.
  • Some scenes in Twilight had the same sort of dark tone that 30 Days of Night did. I think he could be a good fit, especially if he ups the action/violence.
  • JACKDURP!
  • This actually makes some sense. A female empowerment movie followed up by a hardcore vampire flick. I think his resume actually fits for the job.
  • 30 Days of Night sucked which makes him the perfect choice since Twilight also sucked.
  • Bayona is an excellent filmmaker as well-- I just saw the Orphanage which was simply haunting, well directed and well-acted. As for Drew Barrymore, I'm looking foward to her directorial debut with Whip It! starring Ellen Page, so I can't say for sure if she would be a good director or not.
  • I agree with mostly everything your saying. Gear says you should keep up the mostly fantastic work. :D!!!
