This Week in DVD is a column that compiles all the latest info regarding new DVD releases, sales, and exclusive deals from stores including Target, Best Buy and Fry’s.

Please don’t take the commentary on the movies and TV shows too seriously, as they’re meant not to be reviews but rather previews that include the general thoughts and ramblings of a twice-committed DVD addict. The categories represent solely the author’s intentions towards the DVDs at hand, and are in no way meant to be a reflection on what he thinks other people should rent or buy. So if he ends up putting a movie you like in the “Skip it” section without having seen it, please keep in mind that the time you could spend leaving a spiteful but ultimately futile comment could instead be used for more pleasant things in life. Like buying DVDs.

THE WRESTLER
In what I’d argue was one of the biggest snubs in Oscar history, the Academy Awards’ failure to nominate The Wrestler for Best Picture showed not only a lack of appreciation for director Darren Aronofsky’s emotionally devastating, richly affecting tale of a lonely man trying to fill the empty void in his life, but also a lack of foresight. While movies like The Reader and Frost/Nixon are likely to be forgotten in less than five years, I predict this is a movie that will only grow in appeal; Mickey Rourke’s heart-wrenchingly honest performance ensures it.
Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: A ‘Within the Ring’ featurette, and a ‘The Wrestler’ music video by Bruce Springsteen.

FROST/NIXON
Had Frost/Nixon never been nominated for Best Picture, I’d be in a much easier position. It would free me to discuss the film’s merits (of which there are many) instead of take issue with the Oscar’s claim that it’s one of the year’s best (which it is not). To argue against the latter point would be a losing battle: Frost/Nixon is nothing more than fluff entertainment for intellectual moviegoers. It’s a well-written dialogue-based drama with several strong performances, yes, but it’s presented with such a standard, manufactured narrative that there’s really no room for intrigue. You know what’s going to happen not because it already has in history, but because Frost’s character arc follows the exact same pattern as hundreds of characters before him. And given that Ron Howard seriously hindered the film by incorporating those horrible faux-interviews (which serve no other purpose outside of grinding its pace to a screeching halt), nominating him for Best Director was a big slap in the face to all those filmmakers out there who deserved it so much more than him (*cough* Aronofsky *cough*).
Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: A commentary with director Ron Howard, deleted scenes, and 3 featurettes (The Making of Frost/Nixon, The Real Interview, The Nixon Library).

CAPRICA
Seeing as how I haven’t yet gotten into Battlestar Galactica, I won’t bother discussing the quality (or possible lack thereof) of Caprica. (Devindra Hardawar already did a much better job of that than I ever could.) Instead, I’m simply going to address an issue that seems to have a number of Battlestar Galactica fans up in arms: in what can only be construed as a blatant cash grab, the Sci-Fi Channel is releasing an extended version of the pilot exclusively on this DVD. This is despite the fact that the show’s eventual Season 1 DVD release is guaranteed to include said pilot (although possibly not extended, thus forcing you to double-dip). On top of that, the series doesn’t even begin airing until early 2010, meaning this DVD—and I believe digital download—are the only legal ways to check out the show until then. And even if you do decide to check out the DVD, there’s still going to be almost a year of waiting until you can see any other episodes in the series. Kind of annoying, huh?
Blu-ray? No.
Notable Extras: A commentary with director Jeffrey Reiner and others, deleted scenes, and video blogs (What the Frak is Caprica?, The Director’s Process, The V Club, The Birth of a Cylon).

NOTORIOUS
(Available as single-disc Unrated Director’s Cut and 3-Disc Director’s Cut + Digital Copy)
Conventional, formulaic cinema is the bane of my movie-going existence, no matter how competently executed. I watch films to see something new, not to watch the same thing I’ve already seen dozens of times before. It’s disappointing then that this appears to be the very issue that so heavily plagues Notorious, a biopic that apparently has no mind of its own in detailing the rise-and-fall of rapper Christopher Wallace (aka the Notorious B.I.G.).
Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: The three-disc includes two audio commentaries, deleted scenes and featurettes (Behind the Scenes: The Making of Notorious, I’ve Got A Story To Tell: The Lyrics of Biggie Smalls, Notorious Thugs: Casting The Film, Biggie Boot Camp, Anatomy of a B.I.G. Performance, Party & Bullshit, The B.I.G. Three-Sixty).

  • The DVD cover of The Wrestler is threatening me into buying it. "Buy me or I'll RAM JAM you!!!"

Also agreed on the snubs, it should have won actor and at least been nominated for direction and picture. Not even to mention the song snub. But this is no place to go over this again.
  • I agree... it makes me sick that The Wrestler got a HUGE Oscar snub.. not even for Best Director, Best Original Screenplay or Best Original Song. pathetic.
  • Keyser Söze
The extras on The Wrestler DVD make me sick.

Any word on Aronofsky potentially releasing a supplementary commentary? This was my favorite movie in recent memory and the DVD treatment it is getting is absolutely terrible.
  • When there was no commentary on The Fountain he released it on his website. Maybe he prefers doing it that way as (I imagine) there are no restrictions on what he wants to say.
  • Yup, Aronofsky > than Ron Howard. And The Wrestler > Frost/Nixon, Australia or The Reader.
  • John Jones
    Who is this Adam Quigley?
  • Great announce, thanks for it.
  • Hm, i liked Frost/Nixon way more than the Wrestler. I was really disappointed after all the hype here on /film. I expected something more unique from Aronofsky.
  • Hm, i liked Frost/Nixon way more than the Wrestler. I was really disappointed, especially after all the hype here on /film. I expected something more unique from Aronofsky.
  • i like the original theatrical one sheet for The Wrestler better than the dvd art. i still need to see this movie.
  • Same here the dvd has been sitting in my stack for too, long... it doesn't help that the GF doesn't want to see it.
  • Yo necesito un gato
I thought Frost/Nixon was better then The Wrestler. Both great films, but of the five films nominated at the Oscars i thought Frost/Nixon should have won. A film doesnt need intrigue or be unique to be considered a great film. It had everything a great film needed, amazing writing, powerful performances, neat and well paced direction from Ron Howard who never disappoints, and it was enjoyable and kept your attention from start to finish, a near perfect and well formatted film.

I thought that The Wrestler was a terrific film -- and an enormous snub, particular in light of crap like Benjamin Button getting the nod. Frost/Nixon? It was okay, but the original interviews (available, by the way, on iTunes) weren't improved upon in any way. That's my view, anyway.
  • You forgot the Sin City bluray.
  • Joe
Don't knock Frost/Nixon. It was #3 on my Best of 2008 list.

Now, granted, I didn't see all of the nominated flicks, but it was much better than The Overlong Case of Pretentious Button and The Reader. Slickly made, well-acted... it shouldn't have won, but I'm glad it was nominated.
  • The bigger problem with Notorious is that it's exec-produced by his mama, so we don't get a real picture of Biggie, only a glossy portrait that shows, "Oh, he wasn't such a bad person." It's formulaic and kind of insulting, but Woolard does a great job.
  • Jarryd
The Wrestler was definitely snubbed at the Oscars this year and the only reason why I believe it only got 2 noms is b/c it was about "wrasseling" which is seen as a hillbilly hick type thing like The Dark Knight is a comic book movie which only nerds appreciate and Wall-E is an animated movie which only kids can appreciate. Until this stigma is that out of the Academy all the best picture will be very standards because they will be dramatic period pieces with tragedy striking. We will probably never see a movie like Star Wars get nominated for best picture again. However we may see comedies start to get into the mix like Little Miss Sunshine and Juno.

I do believe Mickey Rourke got royally screwed out of best actor b/c he actually replaced Nicholas Cage in the movie and I don't think Nick Cage could do an Oscar worthy performance. Where I think anyone could play Harvey Milk and get an Oscar nom just b/c of the subject matter.
  • To be fair Penn did do an amazing job. The final decision wasn't something I agree with but it isn't too much of a stretch to give the award to Penn.
  • The Wrestler is an instant buy for me.
  • Anybody know of any Blu ray reviews online for the Wrestler? Anyways, I felt The Wrestler was a near perfect, awesome movie. I'm going to netflix Frost/Nixon. I wanted to see it but no one else wanted to becasue they said "it's a movie about an interview, how boring" We'll see if they were right or wrong. Love Ron Howard though (minus the Davinci Crap).
  • dagreenman18
That best actor snub fucking hurt. Penn was good, but honestly his role wasn't worth a nomination let alone an oscar. Mickey Rourke gave a magnificent performance in a film that will be remembered longer than Milk, Frost/Nixon, and especially the fucking Reader.
  • Enough......Lets just look at it in a civil manner.

Rourke did an amazing job, but it is a director like Aronofsky that was able to pull out that emotion from Rourke. No insult to Mickey, but lets face facts, his best acting was almost twenty years ago! The snub was for Aronofsky for being able to get that performance from Rourke. Watch the next two films that Rourke does!

Milk was a good movie. The emotion that Sean Penn puts on the screen is palpable and amazing. I hate Sean Penn the person and the political bull that he slings out, but that man can act if given the role that allows him to do that.

As for Notorious....it was ok and that is giving it more than it really deserves!

Adam is racist because if Notorious was about a white guy he would say Buy It instead of Skip it.
  • 790
Kinda pissed that there's no commentary on the Wrestler dvd. I'll just hang on to my screener thanks.

Couldn't two shits about Nixon or a dead gang member. Anyone named nortorious big can go to hell and die.... :)
  • Infrafan
Geez. "Fox: We just don't care anymore." And the words Battlestar Galatica are nearly as big as the title on Caprica. lol. Stinks of desperation.
  • The Wrestler was definitely my favorite film from last year. Already bought it today.
  • Horror fans: Laid To Rest features a Chrome Skull killer boasting insane kills and has a supporting cast featuring Thomas Dekker and Lena Headey from the Sarah Connor Chronicles!
  • he DVD cover of The Wrestler is threatening me into buying it. "Buy me or I'll RAM JAM you!!!"

Also agreed on the snubs, it should have won actor and at least been nominated for direction and picture. Not even to mention the song snub. But this is no place to go over this again.

Also what kind of sick twisted world does Notorious get a better DVD release than the Wrestler.

Note: Intensedebate is acting up and deleting my edits and posting extra empty posts under my name. Sorry for the Inconvienence.

It's a touch call between Frost/Nixon and The Wrestler... they're two completely different films.

I'd have to go with Frost/Nixon, but coupled with the Frost/Nixon The Complete Interviews DVD. Together, they convey the richness of the actual events (One being a dramatic narrative, and the other being the ACTUAL interviews that took place).
  • It's funny how NOTORIOUS has an even 50% on rottentomatoes because I thought it was half of a good movie. The first hour was pretty watchable but was followed by an atrocious and unblelivable second hour. I understand it's a movie and they need to take artistic license here and there but I find it extremely hard to belive that Biggie decided to rap up every loose end in his life by making cell phone calls only hours before he was gunned down.
  • Albert Brodsky
I watched "The Wrestler" last night. It's such an honest picture. A crafted portrait of real human life. The violence is hard to watch, and the story is so emotional and sad, but I thought it was the best thing I watched all year.
I know people who hated it, and I think the level of blood is hard to stomach, but if you ever watched wrestling as a kid, it's a must see, but you don't have to be a fan of wrestling to enjoy it. It's a piece of solid writing, directing and acting.
  • Definitely going to rent Frost/Nixon and Notorious. Definitely going to buy The Wrestler some day.
  • adawakeman42
I loved all these movies. I bought already Frost/Nixon on DVD and I am planing to buy now The Wrestler. The wrestler is quite a smart movie and was the best opportunity that Mikey Rourke could have for his come back. Oh! And I read in the article that the steroid dealer from the Wrestler got arrested in real life for selling anabolic steroids, which were proved after to be the legal type of steroids. Funny!
