Sometimes a movie poster is an exciting thing to post because it suggests an incredible style, mood or atmosphere for a film. More often, it’s a fresh trailer that truly excites, providing a powerful glimpse of the excitement, intrigue, intensity, hilarity or beauty that we what we hope will infuse the full film.

And other times its a series of posed publicity photos. And, yes, I know that pictures such as these tell us absolutely nothing real about the actual film at all - well, besides who is in it - but when the movie being anticipated is a Chan Wook Park film, as is the case with these snaps promoting his vampire drama Thirst that appeared in Star News, then I think every piece of promotion is enough to raise pulse rates by a few bpm.

Think of these as extra, text-less posters for the movie. They do a pretty good job of giving the picture an air of stylishness, if nothing else.

Aren’t they lovely? Google’s translation service helped me learn that these images will be printed in Vogue and Cosmopolitan. Other portions of their re-languaged version of the article weren’t so easy to comprehend, however:

Completed as a photographer shooting the Borg of Star joseonhui vampires pictorial representation of the bride’s great love was a dangerous decision. However, the topic of ‘The Bat’ poster image taken bakjihyeok cosmopolitan writer, a good pictorial reveals the desire of the eye-catching character.

What you can learn from that passage, though, is that the film is going by the name The Bat back home. I thought that was only a working title and, like Live Evil before it, had been discarded.

The film releases in its native South Korea on the 30th of the month. We’ll have to wait somewhat longer, but I’m convinced it will be worth every single painful second.

  • i like it!
  • wonderful. I think Chan Wook Park does a good job portraying strong, interesting female characters in his films, unlike Hollywood filmmakers. I look forward to seeing Thirst.
  • I really like the first one.

The Vengeance Trilogy is some of the best modern cinema of the last decade and redefined the revenge genre. Brendon----I'm shocked that Oldboy didn't make your top ten list! Like Let the Right One In, I think Thirst has the potential to change the way people tell vampire stories.
  • Oldboy is wonderful, but not a) in the English language or b) that influential, so that's why

In case anyone is interested, here's a translation..

The internet is abuzz with the pictures of Kang Ho Song and Ok Bin Kim, the stars of Chan Wook Park new movie, "The Bat".

In a pictorial for fashion magazines Vogue and Cosmopolitan, Song and Kim were in full character, expressing the movie's feel into every photo. pictures depict images such as Kim, in the pure white dress and the Song, the Priest, choking her, and lying in opposite in a coffin. These pictures have heightened the fans' interest even more.

Star photographer, Sun Hee Cho, shot for the Vogue pictorial, with much praise that the dangerous love of a priest has been expressed so vividly. Ji Hyuk Park, who was the photographer for the "The Bat" movie poster that everyone's talking about, shot for Cosmo, and captures the lead character's dark desires.

"The Bat", has been a topic of controversy since the investments from hollywood, and is slated to open nationwide on the 30th

I wouldn't say it's U.N. translation precise, but, it should get the message across.
  • That's really very appreciated.
  • I'm gonna be pissed when Hollywood remakes OldBoy and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance.

BTW, the inspiration behind the Korean title "The Bat" comes from Aesop's fables, "The Bat, the Birds, and the Beasts". which tells a story about a great conflict between the birds and the beasts and the bat hesitating about which side to join. When the birds asked the bat to join them, the bat told them "I am a beast" and when the beasts asked, the bat said "I am a bird". Then when the peace was made no one would accept the bat and the bat forced itself in seclusion from others, in a cave.

This is a very well known story in Korea, and the bat reminds us of that fable more than blood sucking vampires. Considering that, in my opinion, it was the perfect title, but not in the US. Hence "The Thirst"
  • Really gorgeous photographs.
