New Photos: Neil Marshall’s Centurion

Centurion

Check out a new production photo (above) from Neil Marshall’s epic action film Centurion. Also, the recent issue of Total Film Magazine (#154) features an article with more production photos. See a preview after the jump.

Set in 117 AD, the film tells the story of a group of Roman soldiers who must fight for their lives behind enemy lines after their legion is decimated in a devastating guerrilla attack.  The film just wrapped production.

Cool. At least it's not more CGI crapola like 300.

Agreed. It's nice to see that they're using actual exteriors in the film.
  • Like the costume design.

My years of Latin compel me to point out that "decimated" is the wrong word to use here - especially since this is about a Roman legion.

Decimation was the punishment used by a legion's commanders when the soldiers were mutinous. The legion was divided into groups of ten men who drew lots and the odd-man-out would then be killed by the other nine soldiers. Pretty harsh and it reduced the overall size of the legion by 10% in one go.

I know the word has taken on a broader meaning now, but in light of the subject of this film - which sounds cool - I think it might better to lean more towards the historical meaning.
  • I've seen that first pic (we had it up a while back) but thanks for the Total Film scan. I love everything Marshall's ever done and have high opes for Centurion!
  • Love the desaturated look with the yellow/gold fire. hope this is the look for the film!

I came here to say the same thing as Jon.

Jon, you are 100% correct, the best type of correctness and whomever is downvoting your comment can suck it.

What a load of crapola. He doesn't know how to shoot action. Did you see the way the action was directed in that Mad max turkey doomsday? So now he's doing his low assed version of 300. Get ready for even faster cutting that makes the borne edit look like snow white .
  • I'm actually really looking forward to this one....so far so good
  • I LOVE IT. More period peices, please.
  • I love it,.,, more period pieces, please!
  • The Total Film mag is only out for another week or so, so better to grab a copy whilst you can, theres a double page spread in there. I took the photos published in Total Film, and you can go see more at http://www.aaronsneddon.co.uk/

Most of the exterior scenes were taken at the exclusive Glenfeshie Estate in the Scottish Highlands. The setting was stunning, wait for the film, as well as the terrific acting, the setting is stunning!

I'm a Roman military historian and I'd just like to say that (pace 'Gladiator') for once the film makers seem to have done their homework and come up with the CORRECT Roman military gear for the period. The soldiers are wearing lorica segmentata armour and Imperial Gallic helmets - both appropriate for a date of 117 AD (the accession date for the Emperor Hadrian). The only boo-boo I can see in the short clip is that the mounted officer sports shoulder plates to his muscle cuirass - which is a no-no, I'm afraid.

Legio IX Hispana was destroyed, probably in the eastern empire, possibly in the reign of Hadrian but more likely during that of Marcus Aurelius.
