suckerpunch falling apart

Zack Snyder has lost two more Sucker Punch cast members: Evan Rachel Wood and Emma Stone have both dropped out due to “scheduling conflicts”. This comes one month after it was announced that the film’s lead Amanda Seyfried was forced to leave the project, also due to “scheduling conflicts”. Am I the only person that finds it strange that half of the announced cast have been forced to drop out due the scheduling issues? The cast was announced before Watchmen’s underperformed at the box office.  And while I have absolutely no proof what-so-ever that the events are connected, my gut is telling me that they are.

Seyfried, star of Big Love, Mamma Mia, and Mean Girls was replaced with Emily Browning, whose credits top out with a bunch of crappy horror flicks (The Uninvited, Standed, Darkness Falls, Ghost Ship). And tonight Stone and Wood’s replacements were announced: Jamie Chung (Dragonball Evolution) and Jenna Malone (Into The Wild, Donnie Darko). Malone is a great catch. She’s definitely a talented and underused actress but it’s hard not to see a pattern: Warner Bros is trading down, casting considerably lesser known actresses which most likely will save them considerable cash on the budget side. Could it be that Warner Bros is concerned about the profitability of Snyder’s R-Rated $100 million fantasy film?

Snyder has called the film “Alice in Wonderland with machine guns”, a 1950’s-period action movie which tells the story of a girl named Baby Doll (Browning) who is confined to a mental institution by her evil stepfather, who intends to have her lobotomized in five days. While imprisoned, she imagines an alternative reality to hide her from the pain. In this fantasy world, where she needs to steal five objects to help her out before she is deflowered by a vile man.

As it stands right now, Vanessa Hudgens (High School Musical), Abbie Cornish (Stop-Loss), Jamie Chung and Jenna Malone will play Browning’s fellow inmates who also travel into the alternate reality. But at the rate things are going, I wouldn’t be surprised to also see Hudgens drop out of the project. Warner Bros has previously announced a October 8th 2010 release date.

  • Jamie Chung really...

After that atrocious film (Dragonball: Evolution) you'd think her career would slow down but now she gets a part in Zack Snyders film?

If I was Zack I'd drop the project altogether.
  • so Chung wrote and directed Dragonball Evolution?

it's not really fair to blame an actress who had 15 mins of screen time as the downfall of an already awful movie....she's young and willing to do stunts with a background with them... I think Zack would be lucky to get an actress who knows what they're doing when it comes to stunts....since this movie sounds more action oriented rather than focused on skilled acting abilities...it's an action flick not Shakespeare
  • Jamie Chung definitely can do martial arts, she just needs the right project to show off her chops.
  • I'm not going to lose faith in this film just yet. I think he should do fine this cast. And honestly? I'm more excited about Emily Browning than Amanda Seyfried, and Jenna Malone is easily as good a choice as Emma Stone, possibly even better.
  • gah
maybe they dropped out because they realized that premise sounds like a crappy 90s videogame. im not judging the material just yet, but based on that synopsis....it sounds really fucking stupid.
  • Omen
Yes I'd have to agree with that. The synopsis sounds bad. MST3K Razzie Award bad. It doesn't mean the movie itself will necessarily turn out that way. The Matrix synopsis sounded confusing until you actually saw the movie and that turned out awesome. Sucker Punch could as well. But for now all we have is the synopsis and it sounds kind of retarded.
  • I'm not suggesting that the actresses are less talented, although, something could be said about Chung.... I'm saying that the film is becoming a lot less marketable. I seriously doubt a $100 million budget is still in place and cost cutting is never good.
  • I understood Emily Browning replacing Amanda Seyfried....although maybe that list of actresses wasn't as set in stone as people are thinking it was....you never know maybe they did screen tests and some of the girls did better....or are comfortable with nudity while the others weren't...there are a bunch of factors involved....it's not just cut and dry as the project is in trouble because the actresses "in talks" aren't getting cast...I don't think Watchmen has anything to do with their leaving the film....they might have seen what was required with stunts and possible nudity and they got scared off....Emma Stone was kind of shocking since she really hasn't had a decent film since Superbad you'd think she'd stick to something that would give her more exposure....remember the girls were never officially cast so nobody is really walking away as of yet...

I'd hope to see Hudgens get replaced she seems to be the one working against the film...really a Disney kid? do we really need another Zac Efron or Shia LaBeouf ruining movies? next it will be Miley Cyrus cast in Sin City 2
  • really you think the Mama Mia or High School Musical crowd will go see this film?....because the actresses at this point have nothing to do with selling this to the public...I don't think it's cost cutting hiring the other actresses I think they're all making the around the same amount of money...none of them are making millions in their previous projects I'm sure they're getting small flat rates....if Amanda Seyfried made the kind of money you think she did with Mama Mia...do you really think she'd stay on a low paying television show?

I don't think any film is less marketable than Watchmen was to the average moviegoer..it showed that when the box office dropped off along with the mixed reviews...it's made 180million worldwide but is still considered a failure...I think this will end up more like 300, so it will be easier to market it to the people who originally came out for 300...
  • I thin
  • So something creative and different, sounds fucking stupid. Right. Makes sense.
  • Chris
Yeah, it does sound kinda silly... however, I still have faith in Snyder and I'm sure it'll be interesting at least.
  • meh
Awfully convenient of you not to mention 'Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events' in Browning's resume.
  • I was thinking the same thing! Just because she was younger doesn't mean it shouldn't be included.
  • This movie seems like it's going to trade on Snyder's name and style a lot more than any one actresses popularity. I mean, I do really like Seyfried, Wood and Stone, but I don't think they're actresses that are big household names or box office draws for most people. Obviously defections like these will make people speculate about the health of the project, but if they're just trying to cut the budget down by casting cheaper actresses (and if Jena Malone is making less than Emma Stone that just makes me sad, considering her incredibly length resume) that doesn't really concern me that much.
  • honestly, I cannot take this film seriously if they have Vanessa Hudgen, a Disney tween star, attached to this. I'm sorry.
  • Lazy T
Yeah seriously. Once I saw her name, forgettaboutit.
  • Usual Suspect
Why? lol I mean she was Thirteen as well before she did those Disney Movies.

I dont think Snyder is gonna curve the story around her "Disney Image" and she probably (I would assume) wants to do something different than those films. I see nothing wrong with it.
  • 100 million for this movie may be pretty steep for Warner Bros. I still think you gotta give Hudgens a chance. Going from HSM3 to this shows me that she is done with the disney princess stuff and wants to move on to more versatile roles. She could be good - I'm going to give her a shot first before I decide if she's bad or not.
  • So is Jamie Chung going to be the first RW star to really cross over to film stardom? Kyle (Chicago) was on a soap and Jacinda Barrett (London) has had some success but they've never broken out. Could Chung do it or is she going to be a poor man's Maggie Q?
  • I see your point. And you're probably right there. But maybe the lower budget will just make Zack more creative with the effects. I can hope anyway.
  • starscream9289
You sounded pissed off about this on Twitter!

I don't know what this is about, but I'm sure it's gonna have a lot of slo-mo.
  • Not a good sign, maybe its just not a good script/story. And with Snyder getting torn a new one by industry pundits for the BO performance of Watchmen, people are getting cold feet.

And Peter, I like Emily Browning too! Forget Ghost Ship, did you see her in Lemony Snicket? THAT's what made me believe she would be great for this.
  • Lono
It just sounds like a lame idea to me. Baby Doll? Yeah that's real original.
  • Two steps forward (Malone) and two steps back (Chung).

Malone is uber talented (Stepmom and Saved), while Chung has MTV Real World San Diego under her belt. No me gusta.
  • I think she did a TV series last year where she played a martial art princess.
  • 3 blondes out, 3 dark haired in. Just noticing that.
  • Ezekial
The original cast was really interesting, and now that interest is gone. All that is left is Vanessa Hudgens, and well...she can't act. Good luck, Zack Snyder. You have a lot of time between now and Oct. 2010.
  • danielle
blah i'm just not looking forward to this at all now, and i was so pumped before, The only reason t watch it now is malone and cornish
  • I guess the actors wised up...
Hack Snyder is a moronic director, I shudder thinking of what idiotic script he will come up with to exhibit his SLOW MOTION EXPLOSIONZSS
  • Usual Suspect
This is probably a fun quirky movie where half the challenge for the audience is seeing these girls in a totally different or it could be Snyder's version of a kids/teens movie (Which would still stand out I assume)

The fact that you wouldnt expect some of the actresses to be in a movie like this is part of the intruiged.
