trick r treat

Update: Dougherty has posted the following message on his blog : “Two announcements are coming. One in June, the other at Comic-Con in July. Fun stuff that makes me smile…and finally relax. Thanks for all of your messages and support.”

Screenwriter Michael Dougherty’s (X2, Superman Returns) feature directorial debut Trick R Treat has been sitting on the shelf for almost two years. The film earned great reviews and buzz from a handful of screenings, but Warner Bros has been reluctant to release the film in theaters.

A new trailer has surfaced on About.com (found via Shock ), which ends with the words “Coming to Blu-ray & DVD This October”. It is unclear if the film will be released theatrically before then, but it is very likely that Warner Bros is sending the film direct-to-home video. It’s a shame because I know a lot of people who were interested in seeing this film on the big screen. Anna Paquinhas gained a larger fan following thanks to the HBO show True Blood, and it seems like this film would be an easy sell to the audience.

Plot Synopsis: It is said that Halloween is the night when the dead rise to walk among us and other unspeakable things roam free. The rituals of All Hallows Eve were devised to protect us from their evil mischief, and one small town is about to be taught a terrifying lesson that some traditions are best not forgotten. Nothing is what it seems when a suburban couple learns the dangers of blowing out a Jack-o-Lantern before midnight; four women cross paths with a costumed stalker at a local festival; a group of pranksters goes too far and discovers the horrifying truth buried in a local legend; and a cantankerous old hermit is visited by a strange trick-or-treater with a few bones to pick. Costumes and candy, ghouls and goblins, monsters and mayhem…the tricks and treats of Halloween turn deadly as strange creatures of every variety—human and otherwise—try to survive the scariest night of the year.

The movie stars Anna Paquin, Brian Cox, Dylan Baker, and Leslie Bibb.

I remember seeing the trailer at Comic-con 07 and it seemed pretty cool. Then didn't they include the trailer on the Halloween DVD?

any way, I would still like to see see. seems like it could be a cool flick.
  • I saw this at Manns a while back. It was pretty good. The visuals were great, but some of the stories fell a bit flat in my opinion, notably the werewolf part. I think it could make some cash if they market it right, not a lot of cash, but some.
  • It's about damn time.
  • _spinster_
Damn this was supposed to be released in "07" and yet here we are with another release date, i swear it better not change
  • Infrafan
I'll believe it when I'm watching it.
  • ask_murdera
I hope it gets a theatrical release, it really deserves it. I caught it at Screamfest last year and it's wicked good fun. Not perfect, but it really nails the visuals and the tone.
  • Fir3Wolf
I have only heard great things about this movie and have been waiting to see it since '07. Even if it doesn't get put out in theaters just knowing it might be hitting DVD this year is good enough for me.
  • that picture looks spooky, love it!
  • Goobity
Did ya check out the trailer? Spooky is right!
  • Trick R Treat looks like a fun Halloween movie...but I doubt it would click with mainstream audiences who expect dumb bloody gorefests at this sort of season (eg SAW). Warner seems to agree, and rather than give it a release where it would fail to find an audience theatrically, maybe the home video release is the right way to go, a stronger more appreciative audience definitely lies there.

    hell yes
  • Jeremiah
i wana watch that shit now
  • Dylan
Definitely not a mainstream Halloween movie. I read the script last year and it's very entertaining and could be a great movie but way too weird for mainstream.
  • Yep
    eE
even if it's a good scare warner's will not release it. Why? This is their way of paying him back for that turkey Superman film. They were promised a big hit movie and they got an expensive superman dud. And Yes he is partly to blame for that.
  • yep 2
    I'm refering
    I'm referring to that writer
  • richard
saw a trailer for this a long time ago
    looked pretty good
  • awesome. loooong overdue. glad we'll be seeing this in october!!!
  • Maweanne
this is one of the best horror movies in years and it to just have it be released on DVD and not in theaters is just a shame. It's my second favorite movie of all time.
  • I don't even like horror movies that much, but that looks pretty good. Doesn't seem that hard to market at all.
  • First time I'm hearing of this one. And I'm half pumped to learn of it and half immediately disappointed that Warner Bros. has been sitting on it and might well kick it to DVD.

It's pretty rare to get a really satisfying anthology film, but the trailer looks good, and the cast is really impressive considering the material:

First, you have cool character actors like sledgehammer-jawed Tahmoh Penikett (of BSG and Dollhouse), Brian Cox (the original, and to my mind by FAR the creepier Hannibal Lecter) and the wonderfully skeevy Dylan Baker. Then, of course, you have quite a few hotties, most of who actually can act to boot: Anna Paquin (rockin' the Oscar and a tight lil' bod), Leslie Bibb, Rochelle Aytes, Moneca Delain and Lauren Lee Smith.

Granted, X2 is the only really impressive entry in this writer-director's bio, and of course that was a team job where he was one of five writers (and that's just the credited ones). But I'd definitely pony up tickets for me and my girl to check this one out in the theater. Get with it, Warner Bros.!
  • If you put money into a movie, then just show the damn thing in the theaters or at least on dvd. It's been getting good buzz and it will make more money being released in some format than sitting on your shelf for 2 years.

I never get things like this....seems pretty damn dumb and counter productive
  • who's anna paquinhas??? ha, peter you need to proofread your article before posting but anyway really looking forward to this film.
  • FINALLY !!!!! I mean, how bad could it be relative to what's out there?
  • Theaters...DVD? Just get it out already.
  • headmonkeys
Finally-fucking-ly. Been waiting years for this. And like the comment above, I don't care if it comes to DVD or Theaters. At this point anything would be great. Hell I'll take VHS.
  • The_Kid
I'll get it, I've been waiting to see this ever since I saw the trailer on my 300 dvd.
  • Joe
Oh, come on, Fox. Dump it in 1500 theaters two weeks before Halloween, advertise in the right places, and you'll recoup your investments on the movie. It looks kickass. If you can get it in theaters I will go see it.
  • terry
this is not FOX its WB
  • Been waiting for this movie since I first read about it on UHM 3 years ago. The story seems solid and the actors are great, so why the fuck wont WB release this damn movie. We need a good horror movie, no more of this torture porn shit (I am guilty of owning both Hostel movies and the first 3 Saw movies) but we need another creepy horror movie thats original, and I think this movie definitely has the potential to be a great movie. So WB get this fucking thing off the shelves and release it already!
  • it is a shame. I'd see it in theaters.
  • Poncho
That vendetta really is the only explanation that makes sense. Why else would WB have treated this movie the way it has? Nobody has come up with any other explanation.
  • B33
As glad as I am to see it'll finally see the "light of day" in some shape or form, I'm a bit let down that the executives at Warner Bros shelved it for two years just to simply "damn" it straight to DVD.

This a horror film that essentially serves as a tribute to the holiday that contributed towards the foundation of the genre itself. It's a film that wants the viewer to actually enjoy it rather than be disgusted by it. And it "dares" to try something new in the endless proverbial "sea" of waste the horror industry has sadly sunk to.

I find it rather pathetic that a film such as "Trick 'r Treat" can't garner a theatrical release, yet the next horribly crafted "Saw" film or another piss poor remake is just around the corner.
  • I've heard alot about this film and I would have definitely watched this in theaters. I guess WB thought it might have suffered and would have possibly cost too much to distribute. Maybe they'll attach it to the 8 films to die for thing.
  • Lea
Hurry and bring it out we want to see it in Australia Sydney
  • Shay
wow this STILL isn't out yet?!? I first saw a trailer when the movie 300 came to dvd.. that was forever ago!
  • Ashley
I think thats gay that they arent going to show the movie in theaters. They can play all these not so scary horror films in the theaters, but when a good horror film like treat r treat comes out they dont want to show it in theaters. I pay good money to watch movies in theaters and a movie like treat r treat would so be worth every penny.
  • Why Warner Bros. would not release this movie, Trick r' Treat, on the big screen is beyond words. There are hords of Halloween people out here, which translates into big dollars, who would flock to see this film, especially if released in October.
Someone is giving bad advice to their studio, or any other for that matter, and should be fired immediatly if only that they are losing out on the obvious monetary windfall this film would project.
As it is only 3 months until Halloween, someone in the studio should get off their lard ass and release the film.
What the hell is wrong with film exec's?

  • TrickTreat
Where is the Trick R Treat movie? I heard that they kept postponing it because of the SAW movies. This sucks! I have been waiting for the movie for 2 years. Just release the damn thing. They have a book, poster and action figure for the movie, but no movie. Come on already. Straight to DVD? Fine....just release it.
  • Leanne Dawson
Such a huge disappointment! My mom and I have waited for two years for this to come to theaters, and they're just gonna slap it onto a DVD? WTF?
  • christina0
