Joss Whedon, Eliza Dushku, Tahmoh Penikett, Dollhouse

It’s safe to say that Dollhouse has finally kicked it into high gear in the second half of this season. While the first crop of episodes were mostly episodic and felt strangely generic, all of the episodes after and including “True Believer” (the fifth, written by Angel and Firefly vet Tim Minear) have proven that Dollhouse is a bonafide Joss Whedon show. In the second half of the season we’ve seen the depth, humor, and excellent character work that we’ve come to expect from Whedon, but that rise in quality has unfortunately not been reflected in the show’s ratings.

In a recent conversation with Whedon, Sci Fi Wire reports that all may not be lost for the show. When asked if he’s heard anything about cancellation, Whedon responds:

They haven’t said anything about a number, and they haven’t said anything about a date. What they have said is “We get it. We get that the numbers are soft, but it’s not a Nielsen world. The DVR numbers are good, and the show’s getting better, and the demographic is good, and we all have a crush on [star and producer] Eliza [Dushku].” So they’re basically fans.

Obviously, there has to be a number we reach that is viable for them economically, or it would be senseless for them, unless they were insane fans like me. But they get it. They get the show, and they get what works. So they’re anxious for it to stay at a level where they can justify throwing down some more. Hopefully that’ll happen.

This is definitely not Firefly repeated. It seems like Fox wants to make things work this time around, but they’re just finding it difficult to make that happen. With Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles pretty much cancelled, the only big change for the remaining Dollhouse episodes is the addition of Prison Break as the lead-in show.

While it’s certainly more popular than Terminator, Whedon also recognizes that the difference in audiences between Prison Break and Dollhouse could also negate any benefit from that popularity. He also had a few words to say on Terminator when asked if that show’s cancellation made him worried about Dollhouse’s survival:

No. I mean, Terminator did very poorly. I don’t know why. I love it. That’s why I’m not on that side of the fence, because I’m not a marketer. I don’t know how these things work. It started strong, and it fell off for some reason. I liked it as a lead-in because, artistically, they were just a nice match. They both had a similar sensibility, and I think Terminator was a really interesting show that really plumbed the depths of its premise really well. So I was happy to be with it.

But the fact is it was doing poorly, and we were doing better, but not great. I think, ultimately, nobody blames us. We did build on Terminator and usually on our own half hours most nights. It’s anyone’s guess at this point.

The shows were indeed a perfect match, both thematically and audience-wise, and it’s a shame that we’re losing that pairing. The shows would have certainly done better if they weren’t scheduled in the Friday night ghetto, but I can’t imagine Fox ever deciding to take a chance and move a cheap reality show to make room for expensive sci-fi shows that inherently have less mass appeal.

You can read more of the Q&A session over at Sci Fi Wire, where Whedon goes into his method for wrapping up the story at the end of the season, as well as what fans can do to help Dollhouse survive.

Discuss: Do you think Dollhouse deserves a second season? What do you think could help the series be more successful?

  • Wow, I'm shocked! I know the show has had a few missteps but I think it has improved week to week for the most part.
  • Sadly, that doesn't seem to be enough these days.

Unless you grab people from the start, you can be dead very quickly.

Ironic how some shows which completely fall - and quickly - apart still seem to persist. Heroes, anyone?
  • hvjd
    q. What do you think could help the series be more successful?
    a. nekid eliza.
  • Dollhouse could be more successful if all of its episode were like the "Man on the Street" episode. aka actually written by Joss Whedon and guest starring Patton Oswalt.
  • I agree, anything with Patton Oswalt added in is alot better.
  • maracle
What the hell is going on in that picture?
  • Pla
Is Whedon a homosexual? It doesn't matter, but I was just wondering.
  • That picture is strangely disturbing. Only because they are looking moist. Eeeeeew.
  • adam
its the whole tarantino top gun rant feat whedon as cruise
  • that is so meta. wow. good call.
  • Palmer
*sigh* Dollhouse is good, but I guess Terminator is as good as dead now.
  • Justin
Rather shame too, the last episode was rather good. To leave the series at that point just makes me kind of angry.
  • I am still going to be incredibly pissed off if they can Terminator. Seriously, they have the best sci-fi show on tv anymore (minus Lost if you count that as sci-fi). The second half of this past season was simply amazing. They probably rank in the top 5 of all time for sci fi shows (Battlestar and Firefly being the obvious top 2). What the hell is Fox thinking? And on top of that Dollhouse is starting to easily become a Whedon classic. Everything the man touches is gold. Give it a few seasons before canning it. Besides, you're already canning one of your most loved shows in Prison Break, why do away with two more? Are they going to slash away Fringe too?
  • Fringe gets like 9-10 million viewers a week. That's enough for them to justify it's place on the network. Although that entire comment is what I feel about the shows
  • Dollhouse has been really good the past couple of episodes, would hate to see it get canceled. Though Eliza Dushku is not very good, quite cringing at times. I stopped watched Sarah Connor mid way during the 2nd season because of the whole John Connor romance annoyed me to much.
  • The romance led to him becoming the badass we're going to see in Salvation. You should have finished up this season. Probably an episode or two after you stopped watching, he absolutely took charge of the whole operation and pretty much went from adolescence to manhood in the matter of a day or two.
  • Whedon's work needs time to breath and build up steam. Doesn't everyone know this already?
  • Seriously. How many times have we done this song and dance?
  • I hope we can see at least two more season i had my doubts about Dollhouse but as the weeks went on i fell in love with the show and the eye candy also doesn't hurt I would be very sad to see this show go.
  • Bob
Of course FOX won't officially announce the cancellation until after the remaining episodes have aired. Otherwise people won't bother to watch the remaining episodes. So they'll keep claiming they're "thinking about renewing it" until the last episode airs and then they'll admit that it's gone for good.
  • daffy
I want to smack Fox. That network could not have mis-managed Dollhouse any more if they'd tried! Very upsetting. At this point I'm blindly hoping for a season 2. Not confident, but hopeful. I'm sure Dollhouse will be replaced by something awesome like America's Top Trophy Wifes, or Who Wants to Eat Bugs for A Million Dollars. Great.
  • Fox screws everything up just look at the cancellation of Arrested Development and almost losing Family Guy they rely to much on that reality bullshit. And seriously The Osbournes Reloaded?? That has to be the worst show in tv history i want my 5 minutes back :(
  • B33
The cancellation of Family Guy was a good thing though.

Swift jabs aside, there's a sense of frustration with corporate executives when they conduct impulsively induced decisions strictly based upon the grounds of "numbers."

I understand that the studio is running a business and it has to make decisions for the good of the company. Decisions worth a rather large sum of money, might I add. But the integrity and quality of the company needs to also be taken into consideration.

With that said, corporate greed has repeatedly stamped on the notion of "quality" over and over again. It's an unfortunate "staple" to the industry.

But I suppose it really comes down to the question, what would Fox really replace the series with? And what if the series went on to be quite successful and just had a bit of a rocky start? Case in point, NBC's The Office.

The series seems fairly interesting and it'd be foolish to proverbially "pull the rug out" from underneath its continuance.

I say give it another shot and see what transpires. If the ratings dwindle to a crippling number and the quality declines, then cancel it. But if both soar, then it's a success that could have been cut down prematurely.

"While it’s certainly more popular than Terminator"

What do you mean by popular?

Do you mean ratings? It has better ratings than Terminator, but not better reviews. Not at all. And I see few people cringing about Dollhouse's possible cancellation. Even devoted Whedonites seem divided on this show.

This is as opposed to quite a bit of outcry over Terminator's likely cancellation.
  • Given the context of that quote, yes I mean ratings. By all accounts the outlook is worse for Terminator when it comes to cancellation. I enjoy both shows, so I'm not taking pleasure in saying that.
  • Xono
Dollhouse did not have better ratings than Terminator it generally trailed behind TSSC in its run though TSSC wasn't exactly fairing all that well either.

Also your statement that TSSC is cancelled is for now baseless not to mention the fact that if were taking rumors into account Fox loves TSSC but just cant get the ratings higher.

So if Fox loves TSSC and Dollhouse a poor show by all accounts which one is going to get canceled hmm let me see ??
  • show is alright. i wouldnt care if it was cancelled tho. its not firefly. never will be.
  • I wonder if this has anything to do with yesterday's showing of Prison Break. If Prison Break's numbers were bad, then it shows that it's not necessarily the show rather the timeslot. If a well established and popular show like Prison Break can't pull decent numbers then what chance does a brand new niche scifi show have in that slot.
  • I really hope they give Dollhouse another season and up the marketing b/c I don't think enough people know about it. I've heard people say that they've never heard of it and thought that Terminator had already been canceled b/c of the whole Friday night switch. The numbers are crap and the scheduling is crap. I catch both shows on Hulu b/c I'm never around Friday nights. Talk about lame timing. Both shows have shown promising development recently and I, for one, would like to see more.
  • Binaryshock
I have watched all the eps of both shows and to this day I still do not understand why people are so in love with TSCC, it's ok, it's decent, but it tries too hard in my opinion. I loved BSG, was really crazy hardcore into it and now after it's done and looking at the state of Sci-Fi atm I am really starting to think that BSG ultimately will ruin sci-fi for a few seasons. TSCC was pretty straight forward the first season, but then all of a sudden it seemed like they decided to BSG the story up in terms of it being all convulted and shit. It didn't need that. That's the reason the show is failing. Just becuase it worked for BSG doesn't mean that every show has to be like that now. TSCC, SGU is supposed to be like that (if it is it won't last long) Dollhouse has that layered story also, but that was pretty much introduced from the get go even tho it was slow played as fuck and made the beginning a bit stale. TSCC was never gonna be the "next BSG" it was just trying to be and that is sad
  • jason B
i actually 100% disagree with you when you say tscc tries too hard. i was shocked & floored by the way the show is not an action shoot em up robot battle every week, in fact those action packed episodes were in the minority. especially with a franchise like the terminator, i feel that trying too hard would be brawls every week with little or no regard to the drama & the psychological aspects of war that the show successfully pulls off. it seems that tscc - like most things in entertainment - is going to have people complaining no matter what the creators give us. frustratingly enough, there is no pleasing everyone.

and i see absolutely no similarities between tscc & bsg. maybe if you could explain that further, rather than just dropping words like 'layered' & 'convoluted' - give some specific examples if you have time, because i think that general blanket you laid down could be applied to nearly every sci-fi show ever created.
  • Craig M.
I can't believe anyone is surprised about Terminator's ratings fall off. The first season did well because it aired during the summer when there was f--k all on to compete with. Then Fox premieres season 2 in the fall up against all the usual Monday night stuff (CBS comedies, Dancing with the Stars, etc.) and wonders what happened to the ratings. Moving to Friday nights wasn't gonna help either.
  • gnopp
The reason why T:SCC sucked in the second season, was because of too many episodes in the second season. The first season was only nine episodes, but the second season had 22 episodes. The second season started strong, but after Cromartie "died", the storylines became poor. Too many filler episodes and too little plot advancement.

I want T:SCC to come back, but the third season must be 13 episodes.

I hope that Dollhouse is getting a second season. The show became much better after the sixth episode. But the second season must to have 13 episodes!
  • greycolumbus
Never understood the appeal of TSCC, so I don't really care about that show.

Dollhouse's grand scheme doesn't seem like it could stretch beyond a second season.
  • This show is great now and has been getting better week by week. Figures Fox would want to cancel it. Twitter users can tell Fox to keep the show on the air at twitter.com/foxbroadcasting
  • Jaysun
hmm, lets see, take it off fridays? Give it an idol bump, like it was originally.
  • It's theme song that's the problem. How did that song get on the show. It's disgusting. People who turn over and try to give Dollhouse a try are subjected to this audible monstosity. How many potential viewers turn back over and watch something else. I really don't get it. I can't understand how this was allowed to happen.

I like the show though. The first few episodes were just exposistion and they dragged a little but I feel that it's taken off now.

Didn't dig Terminator at all. I just couldn't get into it. I think it's because I had accepted Sarah Conners death already. Or maybe that Linda Hamilton just owned that role.

I feel sorry for Summer Glau. Two high profile cancellations. She deserves better than that.

Just don't put her in Dollhouse.

Put her in Heroes. That show sucks and could do with cancellation.
  • Goddam I hate that theme song.
  • Elric
    Yeah, it's awful.
  • Now I haven't seen DOLLHOUSE, but if they cancel it... cut Joss a break and reconsider FIREFLY. Joss talked at SDCC about the possibility of it become a web based show... but c'mon FOX, if you're going to cancel Dollhouse and TSCC invest the money in something you know will succeed... like FIREFLY!
  • Fox always cancels great scifi shows. See: Space Above and Beyond, Futurama.
  • Elric
As a Whedon fan, the main problem I have with this show are the characters. I just don't care for most of them, and the others are under-developed or don't have much to work with. Topher/the science guy is great. Amy Acker is underused. Dushku is sometimes great ,sometimes terrible. Victor/Sierra - un-charismatic actors, weak characters. And so on. Even if you liked the show so far, you have to admit that it's the weakest Whedon show yet. I hope they kill off half of the characters and make some major changes.
  • I hated Dollhouse when it first aired, but now I am actually excited to watch each new episode. I think what this show needs to stay on the air is a new time slot and renewed marketing campaign to get those people who haven't watched it into it again. Also, reruns should only be the good episodes they watch.

Also, one question, does watching the show online on the fox website bump their ratings? Because I'll just have that playing over and over again if it helps.
  • Lee
I love both shows. I think Dollhouse improved at a time that TSCC was a little slow. I really have enjoyed Dollhouse a lot and Fox owes Joss something for the whold Firefly debacle, so bring on that second season.

On TSCC being cancelled I think they pre-empted that a little especially with T-4 coming out. I think people will want their terminator fill between Movie installments.
  • I like the show. Won't care much if it's cancelled. NOTHING will ever replace Firefly
  • Dollhouse is one of the rare genre shows on TV that actually has something worthwhile to say about people and our nature. Canceling would be a real dirty shame.
  • I can't see why tscc is cancelt its a very great thing. I would give Dollhouse a chance to enhance the storyline.
  • I really didn't mind the first few episodes - it was smart, episodic, sci-fi IMO, that harkened back to an 80s paradigm of storytelling (like the original Knight Rider or Automan or Street Hawk - anyone remember those?). Not everything has to be LOST or BSG in terms of mythology. In fact, some shows, ahem Heroes, can really suck big time when they try to make a mythology and end up tripping over their own plotlines, constructs, and character arcs. That being said, the last few episdoes KICKED ASS.
  • Enthropii
Joss Whedon is God. 'nuff said.
  • I like Dollhouse now and I look forward to future episodes but this series started off very slow and at one point I was considering to delete this from my DVR selections. If it keeps up at it's current pace I can see a decent following for this.

If FOX cancels Dollhouse at least I'll have Fringe. Until FOX cancels that too.
