First Look: Neill Blomkamp’s District 9

district 9

The teaser trailer for the Neill Blomkamp’s District 9 was scheduled to hit theaters this weekend with Crank 2: High Voltage, but Sony Pictures pulled the trailer at the last minute. I wouldn’t be surprised if the trailer was moved to Angels & Demons.

Blomkamp is the South African born short film and commercial director who hired to direct a big screen adaptation of Halo before “financial problems” forced the project back into development. District 9 is super secret sci-fi project produced by Peter Jackson, based on Blomkamp’s short film Alive in Joburg.

Sony has released the first image from the film, but unfortunately it doesn’t show the cool alien creatures featured in the movie. The photo features Wikus (Sharlto Copley), a Multi-National United agent who becomes infected by alien biotechnology. He must go on the run from the oppressive government into District 9, a internment camp where “non-humans” have been forced to live since landing on Earth nearly 30 years ago. Thanks to /Film reader Mike S for the tip.

  • This movie is going to be awesome! It reminds me of Children of Men.
  • I was really hoping we would get to see something from this film this weekend. I guess this image will have to do for the next couple of weeks until Angels & Demons is released.
  • This trailer will be out sometime this coming week. My excitement meter for this project is through the roof.
  • Those are some FREAKY eyes lol

That said, I have been following this one for a bit and I don't see it disappointing. I'm looking forward to the trailer.
  • Wow, first time I have heard of it right here. Synopsis is very intriguing - sounds like my kind of sci-fi film. Seems to be a bit of a science fiction revival going on at the moment, it seems. I am very much looking forward to Moon!
  • Oh the mystery is killing me:'(...give us the damn trailer already
  • As awesome as this movie will probably be, I am still wondering what it WILL be. A straight out action sci-fi? Smart man's sci-fi? A sci-fi movie with undertones about the nature of man and the fact that anything that fills strange to us also feels inferiour to us? Hmm, I wonder wish one I want. Oh, sorry, I meant SyFy. My mistake.
  • Pretty smart decision to pull the trailer for Crank 2. It would not have had the big effect they should aim for, like Cloverfield did in front of Transformers. They should move it to Star Trek, that movie will be pretty big, and the audience will be similar.

I REALLY WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT THIS FILM! THIS PICTURE LEAVES ME VERY CURIOUS. AND IF PETER JACKSON IS INVOLED-I'M VERY INTRESTED!

I can't wait for all of the new science fiction films to hit this year. District 9 looks like it has a lot of potential.

Does anyone know anything about a U.S. release date for Franklyn? Are they changing the film or something?
  • He is a very talented guy, i cant wait for this. i'm kind of mad i've had NO idea about this for that long of time.
anyone have any idea to how long this thing has been in production?

Alive in Joburg was a damn impressive film and friends I know who went to SHOWEST and saw the footage from District 9 were blown away. We've got this and Moon, Star Trek, and Avatar later this year. Science fiction fans are going to get treated to some very impressive films this year. And I, like a lot of people, believe that indie Sci-Fi is about to get a big shot in the arm with Moon and District 9.

I thought Alive in Joburg was actually pretty standard boring stuff. Barely better than Sci Fi Channel for me. Sorry.

This plot sounds exciting, also hoping this is a good year for fantasy and sci-fi films.
  • Doesn't show much but im still excited as hell for this movie. Neill Blomkamp is going to blow up !! But not in a Micheal Bay way

If the movie is as good as his shorts are, this will be one of the top films of the year. and hell, maybe it will finally get Halo made.
  • the short was amazing....I really hope Blomkamp got a decent budget and it looks visually like the above image.....this man might be the guy to actually get the Halo movie made with the help of Peter Jackson...if District 9 is successful enough it will happen, we need to support it!

Blomkamp's Halo shorts for the Halo 3 marketing campaign were great and
I could only imagine what he could do with a full feature, big budget
and Bungie's guidance, but the studio didn't want to take a chance on an
'unknown' director. Hopefully District 9 will be successful enough to
get the Halo project back on track.

Everyone should go to D-9.com! (the official district 9 site). They put so much detail into these sites, they actually look realistic (right down to a blog written by one of the non-humans and comments made by those for and against them). There's also a tone of information that you can gather, if you look at it thoroughly enough. I'm really excited for this movie; I hope the movie is as impressive as the sites are.
Also, they showed the District 9 trailer before the new Wolverine movie (seemed a pretty good choice).
