green lantern

Warner Bros has decided to shoot The Green Lantern at Fox Studios Australia in Sydney. THR is reporting that the film’s budget is around $150 million. To put that in perspective (and these are all estimated numbers…), Fantastic Four was $100M, Iron Man was $140M, Watchmen was $150M, The Dark Knight was $185M, X-Men: The Last Stand was $210M and Spider-Man 3 topped $258M.

But why Australia? The reported $150 million budget is worth a lot more in Sydney. The production was attracted by the decline in value of the Australian dollar, a 15% location rebate from the Australian federal government, on top of the incentives supplied by the New South Wales government.

The film is planning to begin in July with actual filming scheduled to start in November. The film is currently set to hit theaters on December 17th 2010.

  • I live in Sydney and I hope all goes well with the Green Lantern film.
  • I live in Brisbane and I hope all goes well with the Green Lantern film.
  • I watched Crocodile Dundee and I hope all goes well with the Green Lantern film.
  • Fox? As in, "we like to fuck things up all the time no matter the cost" Fox?
  • Jeff L.
    Quite a gamble.
  • I'm glad the ball is rolling on this project. Now all they need to do is start the casting process.
  • Agreed. Last I heard, Chris Pine was in talks for the lead, but I think Nathan Fillion would be better choice.
  • I've heard he was in talks for the role but I bet Warner Bros. goes with someone else. I hope they do because I think Pine looks a bit too young. I wouldn't have a problem if they were to cast him.
  • Didn't we already know this was shooting in Sydney? At least I was under that impression, and that would be odd if it wasn't the case until now.
  • how the hell did X-Men 3 cost so much? More so than Dark Knight and Iron Man
  • dannyboy
of cause X-Men 3 will cost more many cause they already had two successful movies already. Iron Man will be lower cause its the first movie and The Dark Knight will be lower then X-Men 3 cause The Dark Knight is just a second movie by Chris Nolan.
  • The actors would cost a lot as they already were stars, but this was a sequel to already successful films...
  • Oi to the Vey
i'm wondering why they're starting filming in November? Studio space?
  • woah buddy
How the f**k was X-Men the Last Stand $210 million. What a waste of money! X2, besides being eons better than the crappy Last Stand plot and character wise, looked so much more expensive and...competent. Everything about Last Stand seemed slapdash - ummm, they couldn't even give Phoenix a decent costume.

Stupid Brett Ratner. Ugh, i'm not bitter.
  • God...I really despise X3. Lord have mercy.
  • DoogleberryWinkler
Ummm..... interesting that you don't put up the figures for SUPERMAN RETURNS - a large scale SUPERHERO movie filmed in SYDNEY. Might proove a better point of comparison. Does anyone know the costs of that one?
  • the final tally was ~200 mil, but at least 50 million was tacked on during the decades of developmental hell.
  • Abbie
Almost right. $270 million total with $60 million tacked on from before
  • I live in New Zealand and I think that dingo is eating your baby.

PS I also hope all goes well with the Green Lantern.
  • jfjh
    That's $150
That's 150 mill down the toilet just like watchmen
  • dannyboy
first of why film the movie in Australia also why Fox Studios its a bad idea cause even Superman Returns was film in Australia in Fox Studios and look what happen
  • Thanks for this stunning piece of insight.
  • people need to re-read the article again.
  • dannyboy
i read the article i know whats its talking about the do the production work in Fox Studio but im saying its a bad idea for WB to film the movie their its a bad omen cause even Superman Returns was filmed their and look what happen
  • mangoskiwi
i think Superman Returns was also around 200 million. but i could actually see 200 million in that movie. i dunno about x3. 150 is quite the risk though, hope it turns out well!!
  • it was 200, but a lot of it was tacked on before they even started making it from developmental hell years.
  • (a) @DeltaAssault - lol
    (b) @DeadlyPorpoise - BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA<3

    :)
  • mikeyclt
I would love to live in Sydney or Brisbane or New Zealand and thats not a knife....THATS A KNIFE....and I dont really care either way about the Green Lantern
  • DerekJames
I know a guy who lives in Sydney and I hope that he hopes all goes well with the Green Lantern film.
  • Please be good. Please be good.
  • Johnny Boy
Sounds like Warner Brothers is just using the studio space. Fox is not making the film
  • ^ This.
  • jason B
i wonder if gossling is still in the running for hal jordan. dammit that'd be perfect.
  • Who the hell is going to go see a fucking Green Lantern movie, come on.
  • Mecline
I'd be betting on a lot of people.
  • yeah The Last Stand was pretty awful. a huge waste of $$$

the Hollywood studio system is run by morons, I'm amazed at their stupidity when it comes to movies.
  • Green Lantern has always been my favorite super-hero, mostly because of the unbelievably dense mythology. But I doubt Fox will be able to translate that part of the story into a two hour movie. Instead, it will likely be a movie about a guy who can shape-shift things after he finds a magical ring in the garbage one day. His first order of business will be to make Wolverine-like swords grow out of his arms.
  • filmkid
Fox aint doing the movie WB is doing the movie they just using FOX Studio to productions thats all even Superman Returns was done to do some production
  • Thankfully, WB is making the movie. They're just using Fox's studio space, from what it seems. So don't fret. DC belongs to WB her. It's Marvel that's in Fox's hands.
  • Fox isn't making the movie! WB is! They're just using one of Fox's lots to film parts of it in.
  • Yeah thankfully - I think I let my anti-Fox emotions get ahead of me here. Well I hope it's a good film. I'm not psyched about Martin Campbell for what it's worth.
  • Nobody seemed to mention that this would be a pretty perfect Coast City, you know, the place where Green Lantern lives? I realize they could have used an American coastal city but if its cheaper there, why not? Its a beautiful city and a little exotic to American audiences.
  • ethan
who the hell is playing green lantern
  • IMDb has Chris Pine as rumored.
  • Pretty surprised at how big the budget is for this movie - I didn't expect anything voer 125 million.
  • Palmer
Wait, Fox is making this movie? Please don't let them fuck it up.
  • Nice to see that one industry is alive and well in this economy. 150 mil wow. This means they'll probably go for a bankable star as the lead.
  • kiwimangos
i got a question, does the script actually call it "THE Green Lantern"? that seems odd.
  • hal jordan
the script is just titled "Green Lantern", and hopefully they have had plenty of rewrites since the first draft.
  • Fox just own studios -- 'FOX STUDIOS' -- in Sydney. Anyone can rent space there and shoot a production, which is what I assume Warner Brothers have done.
