somewhere casting

Sofia Coppola has announced that she will be returning to the big screen with a dramedy she wrote titled Somewhere. Her fourth film will star Stephen Dorff and Elle Fanning, and centers on Hollywood’s iconic Chateau Marmont, the hotel of choice of many tabloid-friendly celebrities. The story is about a “bad-boy actor” who gets an unexpected visit from his 11-year-old daughter, and is forced to reexamine his life. Sounds like Dorff is being set up for a Mickey Rourke-like performance.

Coppola calls it “an intimate story set in contemporary Los Angeles,” while Focus Features CEO James Schamus describes it as having all the “witty, moving and empathetic qualities that characterize all [of Sofia's] work.” I was a big fan of Coppola’s earlier work, but very turned off by Marie Antoinette. With Somewhere it sounds like Coppola is returning to some of the settings and themes that earned her acclaim with Lost in Translation. Elle is a fantastic child actress, although Dorff is no Bill Murray, but who is? The film is scheduled to begin production in June.

Francis Ford Coppola’s daughter broke onto the scene with the acclaimed adaptation of The Virgin Suicides, followed up the Oscar winning Lost in Translation, but in 2006 was faced with her first critical flop — Marie Antoinette, a punk music infused period biography of France’s iconic but ill-fated queen. Her three year absence is also attributed to the 2006 birth of her daughter Romy.

    I'm down.

Everyone's allowed one flop, but so early in her directorial career...it must have been quite a blow. Anyway, I'm glad she's off her hiatus. And don't sell Stephen Dorff short, he's a very talented actor. Felon was one of last year's surprises IMO, and I also liked his performance in City of Industry.
  • But...but Stephen Dorff is short! LOL

I actually like Marie Antonette. It's a beautiful film though it doesn't offer a whole lot there. But it's better than...let's say The Dutchess which is even more misguided.

Ha-ha, you're right, I looked up his profile on IMDb and he's only 5'7". Well, he's still a fine actor nevertheless.

I haven't seen Marie Antoinette. With the exception of Moulin Rouge!, I steer clear of movies that try to fuse completely distinct eras. I thought the Dutchess was good film, though I appreciated it mostly for it's historical significance. Had it not been a true story, I would have probably dismissed it as just another period piece set around the harrowing struggles of an aristocrat.

When did 5'7'' become short? Ha, okay then.
  • I'm 5'2... ggrrrrrrrrr
  • Marie Antoinette may have flopped, but I liked the film a lot. and I agree, Dorff isn't that bad of an actor.

I'm a huge supporter of Coppola's work, and I think all three of her films thus far are masterpieces, Marie Antoinette being the most misunderstood of the three, and I'd rank Lost in Translation among the best films ever made.

But for some reason this doesn't excite me. The plot is cliche, and change bad-boy actor to bad-boy football player and you haver the plot of The Rock movie The Game Plan. I'm hoping the plot description is reductive and just something the trades wrote up, but right now it sounds like it could be kind of awful. I really hope otherwise and it's strange to be so judgemental so early, but it just seems like an odd direction to take.

I look forward to seeing a trailer or photos or something to make me think differently, but for now, color me not excited.
  • Dorff is due for a comeback but this sounds like a Disney movie starring The Rock.

Jesus christ, what the hell is wrong with that kid's hair?

    Its been heavily styled?

looks frickin' stupid, like an 11 year old trying to do the "smouldering temptress" look, which is just disturbing.
  • I think you can't tell much from a one or two sentence summary - especially for a filmmaker like Sofia Coppola. Think about what "Lost In Translation" might be summed up like in a studio's log-line summary... "While spending a week in Tokyo the girlfriend of an ambitious/absentee artist is plagued by insomnia. She finds a kindred spirit in an aging, legendary movie star who is staying in her same hotel and also battling sleepless nights."

And btw, Elle Fanning is a pretty great little actress. Saw "Phoebe in Wonderland" with my sis at the Angelica in NYC and her performance made the film. Looking forward to this one.
  • HELL YES YES YES YES! Love Coppola and I hope this is going to be a great film.
  • After Marie Antoinette, Copolla needs to redeem herself. Fanning was great in TCCOBB.
  • TCCOBB? I figured it out -- but these acronyms can be ridiculous. Why not just say Benjamin Button. Takes maybe 2 second more to type and there's no vagueness or confusion. : )
  • Yea you're right. The fact that I mentioned Elle Fanning before the TCCOBB would make it pretty hard to find out what movie I was talking about. I mean how many movies has Elle Fanning been in with that very same acronym? oh yea one. Too bad most of the internet knows what TCCOBB stands for.
  • Like I said, that made it possible to figure out. But why make people do all that extraneous deductive work just to read a simple sentence. I think assuming most of the internet knows what TCCOBB stands for is pretty presumptuous.

    NOI.

Apparently a lengthy and extraneous acronym is easier to remember then a two word shortening of the title? People are idiots.

But you make up for it with your winning personality ;)

So Sofia is doing another movie inspired by her ex-boyfriend? Since he lived in Chateau Marmont for years and years, she must have a lot of memories to draw from.
  • Phew, when I read "returning to the big screen" I thought it meant she was going to act again.
  • This movie has the potential to be a good one. I hope this can get Stephen Dorff the recognition he deserves.
  • Sal
I am so happy for Elle. Stephen is a great actor. Can't wait to see the fim.
