Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince

Warner Bros has officially released the third and likely final trailer for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. You may have noticed that a low res version of the trailer leaked earlier today thanks to E! Online. But now the higher resolution trailer is now available, as well as HD viewing options. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again… is it just me or is every new trailer more epic than the last? Watch the trailer embedded after the jump and leave your thoughts in the comments below.

Voldemort is tightening his grip on both the Muggle and wizarding worlds and Hogwarts is no longer the safe haven it once was. Harry suspects that dangers may even lie within the castle, but Dumbledore is more intent upon preparing him for the final battle that he knows is fast approaching. Together they work to find the key to unlock Voldemort’s defenses and, to this end, Dumbledore recruits his old friend and colleague, the well-connected and unsuspecting bon vivant Professor Horace Slughorn, whom he believes holds crucial information. Meanwhile, the students are under attack from a very different adversary as teenage hormones rage across the ramparts. Harry finds himself more and more drawn to Ginny, but so is Dean Thomas. And Lavender Brown has decided that Ron is the one for her, only she hadn’t counted on Romilda Vane’s chocolates! And then there’s Hermione, simmering with jealousy but determined not to show her feelings. As romance blossoms, one student remains aloof. He is determined to make his mark, albeit a dark one. Love is in the air, but tragedy lies ahead and Hogwarts may never be the same again.

    holy shit man...looks amazing!

I'm not sure about the hard rock version of the theme....
  • Hat
    Me. Either.

and when did yates become such a badass?!
  • Troy
Yates knows his awesome cinematographers. I still maintain Order of the Phoenix was a well-shot movie, not as good as Azkaban, but close.

    Bruno Delbonnel's photography looks stunning.
  • So many posts on this movie.
  • woah
    this is pretty awesome

This looks like it's gonna be really dark and frightening. I got goosebumps after watching the trailer. Maybe the best Harry Potter yet.
  • The CGI looks a bit full-on at times, but I guess that is to be expected. Looks very much like another Harry Potter picture. Harry struggles with being the chosen one, wins the big battle with evil to save everything/everyone, comes to terms with who he is. Phew! Yes, yes, it's 'darker'... whatever that means. This will no doubt be one of the highest grossing Potter films ever, flying in the face of the financial crisis.
  • I love that whenever someone who DOESN'T like Harry Potter comments on one of these posts, they always say "this will surely be the highest grossing Potter film to date..." as if the fact that you can identify that it'll be successful is just DREADFULLY ANNOYING to you. I can just see your eyes rolling as you type it (and everyone else that says that same statement).

Anyway, the reason why I really wanted to post was to just point out that the main reason why this book/soon-to-be-film is so dark is because Harry DOESN'T really go through most of the same things. Sure, this one deals with him being the chosen one, but that was because of the prophecy...so really, all the ones before it haven't even MENTIONED a "chosen one." Of course there will be inner turmoil, it's a story about adolescents. To leave it out would be inappropriate and unrealistic. And, sorry to spoil it for you (though I can tell you won't really care) but he DOESN'T actually win the big battle with evil in the end.

Sorry to throw out all the nerd-dom, but you just bashed a series I enjoy, so I had to come to its defense.
  • Fair call. Nicely said. Regardless of my hesitant approach to the series, I will still be buying a ticket ;)
  • brilliant!
  • Looks great. I'll be catching this in theaters (like every other HP film).
  • Jim Brown
damn son (mexican accent) looks sick
  • maybe i haven't seen enough of these or something but it just looks the same as the movies from before. is this the 7th movie in the series?
  • that looks completely brilliant. i'm still confused over the PG rating. that trailer (and book) is dark. but i did love the dead people coming out of the water, and Snape saying "It's over" gave me legitimate chills.

and i'm so glad to have the epic version of "Hedwig's Theme" back!!!!
  • Visually it looks stunning, I just hope most of the pensive scenes are in the film.
  • Not so much. They kept a few, but ultimately shortened/cut them all.
  • GregoryV
Now that looks like a Harry Potter film worth waiting.
  • I'm hyperventilating with joy. It looks so good! Each trailer is definitely better than the last. I have to start rereading now! (despite knowing that as always, it will make me more judgmental of the film)
  • POTTER_FAN
Hot damn... looks great to me. I have great memories of the first few HP movies, and I hope this will do the same.
  • stz
harry potter is not epic. it is simply gay.
  • And who ever said gays couldn't be epic? DIDN'T YOU SEE MILK!?!?

Just trying to lighten the mood a bit from your disastrous attempt at being opinionated.
  • ----
Because there is nothing worse then being gay.
  • John Dodge
    Other than being you?
  • Nala
Nothing wrong with being gay, sheesh!
  • That Katie Bell scene where she's lifted into the air was genuinely terrifying when I read it in the book, and that bit in the trailer legitimately creeped me out. It looks like they jazzed up the Sectumsepmra scene. And they focused on the death eaters in the muggle world, which was hardly talked about at all in the book. But I'm really impressed with how that looks. The bridge scene looks awesome. How the hell did this get a PG?!
I get chills every time I hear Hedwig's Theme, but that epic version just bowls me over. It's stunning.
  • That trailer gave me chills...all three times I watched it in a row.
  • shadow
It looks like they kept in all the emotionally intense scenes this time! Thank god!
  • Solid
God I have to say I've not been this excited for a movie since the prequels. Well done Yates! Well done old boy!
  • Looks amazing, I cannot wait!
  • Like I said in the last post, I've always found at least a couple of things that bugged me about each of these films. Some have been about improper adaptations, others have just been general movie-goer grips, but they've always been things that have in the end taken away from the experience.

After seeing this trailer, I have to say, for the first time ever: I don't have my doubts. I fully expect this to be the first movie in the series that I'll have no real complaints about. Unless the trailer and the movie itself are vastly different, I know this will be the best yet. And it's my second favorite book in the series, which just makes me sad to say that my favorite (Goblet of Fire) had such a mediocre adaptation. At least this will make up for it.
  • looks fantastic!
  • Looks amazing. I like the previous trailer too but this is better. Picture seems to be amazingly sharp. I liked that.
  • have you seen Azkaban?
  • Josh
How the fuck did they get away with a PG rating? Who did they pay?
  • Holy shit that was awesome.

    Again, please.
  • The_Kid
That was awesome, I'm so happy my mom made me read those , I enjoy very much, and the movies are just as good
  • oh how effing perfect does that look!!!!!!!
  • Birch
Me too! I'm going to say that Order of the Phoenix was shot just about as well (and was just as good a film) as Prisoner of Azkaban. I don't know where this Yates guy came from but I have full faith he'll bring us smoothly to the end of the series.
  • I have to say, the last trailer was a lot better. The musical score felt more fitting and less edited, and the dialogue actually felt like it came from the movie.

Is it just me, or did every single line of dialogue in this trailer feel like it was spliced together from 10 separate lines?

I'm still immensely looking forward to this film, and I was happy to see some new footage, but this was not the best trailer.
  • The sectumsempra scene in the book was really bloody, and since its PG i am betting its going to be toned down a bit, which is very disappointing, because that was really awesome in the book.
  • jrice73
    Fabulous!!!
  • So EPIC. The big horns at the end playing the main score tease sounded like they turned the volume to 11.

Pretty awesome. I need to do a marathon of all the films before I watch this one.

Why was the burrow on fire? Other than that, looks amazing!
  • GORT
The inferi look too much like Gollum.

It'd be interesting to see how this movie is received by the younger audience since it does not have a traditional happy ending and ends on quite a dark note. I think this won't be the biggest grossing potter movie just because of the fact that parents won't bring their kid back in again.
  • Morren
i think they destroy the burrow to write out the wedding scenes from the start of the last film (part one) seeing as they've haven't featured bill at all so far. i like how they have ramped up the scale of things - that cave looks bigger even than it did in my head. not sure if i liked how they pretty much reveal snape as a "bad guy", but then again, who that didn't know that haven't had it ruined for them by now?
  • Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince looks visually stunning. I'm really looking forward to seeing it.
  • BOYCOT IT OPENING WEEKEND. You've waited this long, wait a few days more to show WB who fills their wallet and that they can't just shite all over us. Is anybody listening? Hello? Of course not. I'll be there Thursday at Midnight as well... sigh...

Were the Death Eaters flying? Wasn't that supposed to be a particularly eerie special Voldemort trick?
