Chris Cunningham’s Gucci Commercial

zz41100e28

Why hasn’t Chris Cunningham made a feature film yet? The UK special effects artist turned music video and short film director creates some incredible work . He was once attached to a big screen adaptation of William Gibson’s novel Neuromancer, but rumor has it that he clashed with the Hollywood system. Apparently Chris is now doing commercial work, and last year shot this beautiful commercial for Flora, a new Gucci fragrance. Starring Australian model Abbey Lee, the commercial was shot over four days in Latvia using a field of more than 20,000 fake flowers. You can read more about the commercial on DazedDigital or watch it after the jump.

I love this ad! Does it's job, I want that perfume and i'm not even a big perfume wearer.

    Reminds me of Edward Scissorhands.

Which one of you Douche bag critics made a fckin commercial? ??????
You should shut your suck purpose and stop hating!
  • Cunningham is insane and I love him for it
  • Chris Cunningham has visual chops, that's for sure. But being able to make impressive visuals in a TVC does not make you a STORYTELLER. There is little in Cunningham's impressive oeuvre that even suggests he is even interested in storytelling. You can't see it in his work - except, maybe, that early Aphex Twin clip with the little girl.

This isn't a bad thing. But we shouldn't assume that amazing TVCs == great feature. They're very different art forms.

Stu Willis: I couldn't agree more. People are constantly misinterpreting visual finery for storytelling. By the way the video I think you are talking about (and yes you are right, its his most narratively accessible work) is the Squarepusher video for the record Come On My Selector.)
  • KitKat:

There are exceptions though. Kubrick was a photojournalistl Peter Greenway was (and is) a painter; David Lynch was a painter (and video artist).

People seem to get more excited by visually talented music video directors jumping to features than, say, theatre directors or writers.
  • Yes, Cunningham is a badass. Also the voice actor at the end was terrible.

Also, on an unrelated note, I just watched The Fall, and it was visually amazing.
  • the opening credits of the fall rival any opening credits out there...

(the rest of the movie was quite amazing as well)

  • Cunningham is probably one of the few directors who can manage to creep me out with his surreal/scary music videos.

I believe the song in the video is "I Feel Love" by Blue Man Group with some heavy editing. Yes?
  • Sheep
I think it's an altered version of 'Strict Machine' by Goldfrapp.
  • Its a newly recorded version, with the song's original co-writer and artist. Donna Summer
  • maybe he is waiting for the right story or he's writing his own story. some directors don't like to work for studios, i guess.

I mentioned Cunningham and his lack of work recently in a "Page 2" post a week or so ago. (I mentioned him as a wonderful potential candidate for a Heavy Metal movie segment.) Great to see Chris get a post of his own!
The biggest concern I have is there are virtually no interviews with him of recent. He's done intermitten work, but no discussions save for a few years ago promoting 'Rubber Johnny.'
So the question is either, does Chris not want/need to do any considerable volume of work because of his own decision or has *Hollywood* just not been paying attention at all to someone who could easily give them a huge cult hit?
He's shown an amazing capacity to work with relatively small budgets and get phenomenal results. But it's been quality over quantity. Still... I want more quantity from Cunningham.
Maybe /Film could get an interview with him and see what he's up to?
  • I'm more of a Dolce and Gabana guy. D and G! duh

Ditto, he would make a kickass sci fi thriller anytime with stuff he's done for Bjork, or even Aphex Twin.

What in the H-E double hocky sticks is going on? My comment was there, I saw it, then I left and I came back and it's gone! It was positive one too! For once! Dang!

Cunningham has one of the strangest aesthetic sensibilities (to me). Rubber Johnny had me going, why the hell would anyone make this? It's ugly and unnerving and just the opposite of beautiful. But it works! I think he and Aphex Twin both have an aesthetic that doesn't exclude unpleasentness, which is intersting to me. I seriously wish he and Aphex Twin would collaborate on a horror movie. Even the sound on the DVD menu of the Director's Series disc made me want to run out of the room. They are ususally obnoxious, but that was just superobnoxious. 'Course then there is All is Full of Love which balances it all out. Maybe he's just more interested in the tech aspects of film making and isn't too jazzed about directing a feature film?
  • he must do movies! i love everything he does
  • Justin
Nothing special about that commercial really, just some cool effects which anyone with a creative mind can do? Michael Bay and McG also made some visually stunning commercials, right?

    Mmmhmm...
  • illroy
Where is the commercial you did? put together a reel or a career then talk shit!
  • OK, two things.

One. It looks like he's created the world's first horror movie trailer for those with severe allergies.

Two. Is it just me, or does the voice over at the end sound like she just does not give a fuck about perfume?
  • "Is it just me, or does the voice over at the end sound like she just does not give a fuck about perfume?"

I half expected her to say, "Flora, a new fragrance by Gucci...go fuck yourself."
  • To #2:

Isn't that like in every perfume ad?
  • Chad
lol, I was going to say the same thing about the v.o.

I'd love to see Cunningham's debut feature. Neuromancer would have been quite a fit - but who knows if this guy can direct actors and carry a story. A commercial is one thing... a feature, well...
  • GregoryV
Never knew he was attached to Neuromancer. Seriously, they need to get rid of Khan or the film is gonna look like some big product placement ad.
  • He has been actively pursued for several big films, and he turned them all down.
  • Brian
His Directors Series DVD compilation is amazing. He could realistically become one of the greatest feature film directors if only he got the right project to begin with.
  • qqq
    with which to begin.
    (don't end a sentence with a preposition...)
  • Ryan Carell
    LMFAO Man I love you.
  • Wilson
Please put "with which to begin" in quotation marks, as you are quoting his previous statement.
  • 'That ad made me want that perfume and I'm not even a chick lol
  • @eeisenberg - sounds like her, doesnt it?

i love cunningham's commercials. has anybody seen his music videos as well? they are absolutely amazing. what a creative guy. very inspiring.
  • An absolutely beautiful ad. Cunningham does stunning work.

On a side note, is that Natalie Portman doing the voice-over at the end?
  • it sounded like her but it also sounded like she was dead...
  • After doing some research (http://www.efragrance.com.au/Brand-Detail.aspx?Br... I am fairly certain that the voice was Portman. It's kind of a long shot, but why else would she be mentioned on the same page as Abbey Lee and Gucci's new fragrance?
  • the visuals are cool, but what was the girl changing into? A flower? I can't tell, due to the bad resolution of the video.
  • freemachine
Nice work. Pretty surreal. Kind of reminds me of Tarsem Singh's work. The chick's voice at the end kind of ruins it though, because she totally sounds uninterested in the product.
  • Great usage of "I Feel Love" too.
