less_than_zero

We know what Robert Downey Jr. and James Spader are doing, and a quick trip to the IMDB indicates that Andrew McCarthy is still working, and Jami Gertz had a picture out as recently as ‘07. Perhaps the idea of rounding them all up for a Less than Zero sequel isn’t as crazy as I first assumed…

The idea comes from Brett Easton Ellis who is now finishing up said sequel, in novel form. He tells MTV that such a film “would be a great idea”.

The original Less than Zero revolves around Clay Easton, played in the picture by Andrew McCarthy, while Downey played his close-at-hand compadre in all manner of substance abuse and abandon. That Easton surname is not, I’m sure you’ve realised, a coincidence. The sequel is going to be called Imperial Bedrooms which, like the originals handle, comes from the Elvis Costello songbook.

Of this new volume, Ellis says:

It’s in present-day. You’ll find out where all the characters from the book have now ended up, for better or for worse.

He explains that the leads have all survived the 20-some years since the last installment, though some of the supporting characters have not.

After Lunar Park, Ellis’ last novel, took fantasy, nightmares and the author’s life and made them all do cartwheels into and through one another, I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that Downey’s real life misdemeanours and misadventure have been folded into the fictional life of Julian Wells. Ellis says:

His character in the book is sober. Fragile, but sober.

Okay… I don’t know about fragile. Then again, we don’t really yet know what he means by fragile.

Should such a film adaptation ever go ahead, Ellis provides some indication of the studio that would be in charge:

Now that I’m finally done with the book I’m thinking ‘God, what if Fox wants to do this as a film?’ Because Fox did the original and I think there’s a rights issue involved.

  • Masked Adventurer
He definitely dies at the end of the film. I can't remember if the book is the same.
  • Didn't his character die?!
  • bonerjams
/Spoiler......Dies in the film. Not in the book. I dont know how a sencond film would work, with the last shot of LTZ being of him, dead.
  • disappear here
julian gives good head. and is dead.

not actually though. he doesnt die in the novel. just kind of disappears.
  • Michael
Julian definitely dies in the movie but does not die at all in the book. He is also mentioned in the book The Informers but the chronology of events in that book are difficult to determine. I think the original movie is okay as a movie but terrible as an adaptation of the book. I would hope that if there was to be a new movie based on Imperial Bedrooms that someone first remakes Less Than Zero into an actual good film. Also, can someone please make Glamorama into a movie already!
  • Kelsey
they sort of did didnt they? Glitterati?
  • Michael
Glitterati was the left over footage from the victor travels to europe section in rules of attraction that supposedly served as a bridge between the two stories but was never released (and according to bret easton ellis in a q&a will never be released).

    Really "Hollywood"?
  • Really???

I'd love to see Spader and RDJ together again. They had such fabulous chemistry and it's just what Spader needs to relaunch his movie career.
  • freemachine
Didn't RDJ's character, Julian, die at the end of "Less Than Zero"?
  • The film and the book are quite different...
  • jason B
but julian dies in both, despite the liberties taken, so it'll be interesting to see how that resurrection is pulled off. i'm down to see an ellis adaptation if it's given the proper respect - i've been waiting for avery's glamorama for nearly a decade.
  • freemachine
"i've been waiting for avery's glamorama for nearly a decade."

Me too. Roger Avary did an excellent job on "The Rules of Attraction".
  • dumbo
you shouldve re-read less than zero during your decade long wait because julian definitely doesnt die in the book.
  • I honestly don't remember Julian's death in the film. To be honest, though, I don't remember much about his life. I'll be popping that back on the TescoRental queue, then...
  • Kelsey
He actually only dies in the movie.
  • 790
In the Film, Julian dies in Jousha Tree of all places. Miles from decent medical care !!!
    . Great film!!!
    There's really no need for a pre-remake-sequel-reboot.

Just make more Iron Man/Avanger fillms RDJ, thanks!
  • man Robert Downey Jr's career really has skyrocked in the past couple of years. I'm happy for him he's a great actor. Hopefully he'll get an Oscar win in the near future.

    Hm.

First of all, I don't think Ellis would at all be enthusiastic about a film adaptation of his upcoming novel, Imperial Bedrooms, for 2 reasons:

    1. Authors USUALLY like their work to stand alone as a novel for a while before being raped by huge movie studios.

    2. Ellis didn't like that horrible, horrible, horrible "film adaptation" of Less Than Zero", so I doubt he'd pounce on the chance to make a sequel.

Also, like the people above have stated, Julian died in the movie.

Everyone should just read the book and forget that shitty movie that had the same title and character names ever existed.
  • JULIAN, DOWNEY'S CHARACTER DIES AT THE END OF THE Less than Zero. How are they going to do that?

Loeved it though, it was my BOOK OF THE YEAR in 08. Read it over the Summer.
This is great news... Spader's character, RIP, is hilarious.

    Spader Rules!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Kelsey
for being your fave of 08, might want to pick it up again. Only dies in the film.
  • I totally dig the fact that theyre going to possibly make a sequel to to LTZ, and I honestly didnt think that, the first was a bad movie at all. Ellis' books are by far the best books I have read, and I do agree with everyone on here that Glamorama needs to be green lit into a movie, I thought that while reading the book lol. I like all the movies that have been taken from his books, granite some didnt do the books justice ie. American Psycho, but all around I definitely feel that this could be a solid film.
  • ben
does inland empire have anything to do with imperial bedrooms? prostitution? loss of self, isolation, alienation, no sense of time, anyone?
  • the don mike
its a cool idea and they could work RDJ in there a few ways..one as flashback scenes but this might not work as they have aged so much so they would have to do major benjamin button effects lol.....or two he can make a cameo as a kinda ghost that appears to them but either way is far off thinking realistically.
  • The Thin White Duke
They can make this movie work as long as they go by the book instead of the film adaption since Julian (movie) dies and Julian (book), as is implied, continues feeding his addiction through prostitution. Personally, I would run up walls if Robert Downey did the remake since he was the saving grace in LTZ...but only if they keep this movie true to the book - do it right this time, Hollywood!!
