eric tan last crusade

We’ve featured many of artist Eric Tan’s creations in past Cool Stuff columns: we’ve spotlighted his work for past Pixar productions, X-Men, among other things. Tan has been creating a series of posters for the Indiana Jones film series. You can see his Raiders of the Lost Ark and Temple of Doom posters in our linked Cool Stuff articles. His latest poster if for the third film in the original trilogy - Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (a film title which use to be really clever because it meant two different things at the same time… use. to. be.) See the full poster after the jump.

Tan writes:

“With the Crusade poster, I also tried to keep the series consistent with a lot of the same criteria I used in the 1st couple of posters. Among them include the limited color scheme, the big head at the top right, the chase scene on the bottom right, the logo down below, the filmed in color banner, and a background silhouette of one of the key settings. I wanted to play up the love connection between the Joneses and Elsa because it plays an important part of the plot so Indy and Elsa are almost equal in scale and you can also make a visual “triangle” between the three characters. Because it’s my favorite on the Indy series of films, I really wanted to get as much as I could into this one. The story is dense and so is this poster in comparison to the previous two.”

Tan even posted his early concept sketch he created for the poster:

  • This is one of my favorites of all your pieces, Tanner. I was blown away when you first showed it. I've only watched a couple of episodes, so I don't have any emotional attachment to the tv show, but this piece has such good storytelling that it makes me want to watch.

I have to agree with AngryBroomStick. While it's a nice poster there's nothing "New" about it. Get any illustration book, like the Workbook, or the Blackbook, and you'll see hundreds of much better illustrations. It's good drawing skills. Good use of the programs, and good overall layout but not anything new. I've worked in the business for 35 years, hiring illustrators and photographers and now teach. Some of my freshmen are doing work that good.
  • When I first looked at this I thought Sean Connery was Johnny Depp from Fear and Loathing. They should make a poster for that movie, I'd buy one.

y'know mr. peter, i actually like that the film title loses its "double meaning" of being the last indy pic. now people finally learn the true meaning to the title. as a kid i always thought it was called that cause it was the last movie. the real meaning is much cooler.

I like this, but not as much as the others. He makes Henry Jones look like an asshole...

Pretty cool poster, But if it's the same price as the Temple of Doom one, I'm not sure I can afford it.

Do you know where I can find his X-Men poster? The links through Slash seem to be dead on that one and the 3 Indy posters are awesome.

In case anyone else wants it. I was just to lazy to google it myself earlier....
  • awesome poster I want one.

Not anyone can do this. Believe me, I've tried. I'm a graphic artist, and I can tell you that the kind of imagination and retro-futurist style that Eric is able to so easily apply is something that you get from a lot of careful planning and tons of experience.

The hard part of something like this isn't using Photoshop or Illustrator, it's coming up with new and fresh ideas that accurately represent the spirit or message that you are trying to convey.
  • Boring, cliched... it's nothing special :-/ I feel like anyone can do that with Photoshop.
  • Design with a concept
you are one angrybroomstick! if you know ANYTHING about design or illustration, you wouldn't think it's that simple. Photoshop? You need handskills, vision, concept, and the uncanning ability to put your concept in reality to be able to do what Eric Tan is doing. Don't hate, APPRECIATE!

Most vector work is done in Illustrator, so before calling things boring or cliche, perhaps learn how they created it. The fact that the drawing is almost as good as the final product shows that there is skill involved. I demand vector art from Angry ASAP!
  • true, that's vector artwork done with Illustrator. Not Photoshop, my bad.
  • I've seen similar artworks like this posted on Slash Film and Snorg Tees before. hence my "cliched and boring" comment. It's nothing new or original.

So sorry to burst your bubbles, boys.
  • cltmikey
What about your "anyone can do it" comment? We are still waiting....
  • BoomStucked
Boring? Cliched? Please feel free to do better. And use photoshop since you think it's the best thing for those type of visuals. That's all it takes right: Photoshop? Seriously, come up with a poster equally as awesome or keep your mouth shut.
  • why don't YOU make one then? Or else shut your mouth.

You've got your mission.....we expect a finished product on either Kill bill or Pulp Fiction at the request of Brian above by the end of the business day....GO!
  • Brian
Annnnd, the business day is over and I am lacking a finished product! Whats up with that!? Oh yea, it is actually a lovely print, and exceedingly hard to design after all? Hmm. :)
  • NICE
  • Brian
Dude's work is brilliant. I can think of a ton of films I would like to see get his treatment. Kill Bill and Pulp Fiction spring to mind.
