Tron 2 Budget Debunked, Camera Tech Revealed

tron shooting

zz627149bbAs suspected, the Vancouver Sun’s report that Tron 2’s budget “carries a whopping $300 million budget” was way overblown. As a company policy, Disney won’t comment on the actual budget numbers, but sources admit that the number is not close to $300 million, even in Canadian dollars.

The above photo (via roya ) features Benjamin Button Director of Photography Claudio Miranda shooting a scene in downtown Vancouver, which is a stand in for New York City (notice the NYC yellow cab). To the right you’ll see a photo of one of the costumed female actresses or extras on set. Unfortunately, the blanket is covering most of her costume. I have also found some technical information about the film, for those of you who might be interested. The movie is being shot in digital 3D using Sony F-35 HD cameras. An unnamed source says:

“Miranda has challenged his crew with the task of having all the flexibility of standard 2D cameras including ambitious use of crane shots as well as Steadicam in 3D.” … “Amongst other setups we will be rigging an F-35 to a GF-8 crane and Mini-Scorpio head to get a birds eye view out over the night streets of Vancouver.”

  • The only thing that interests me about this movie is that it's being shot in 3D. Otherwise, who really cares about a Tron sequel?
  • You're kidding... right?
  • Brian -
Lots of us care about Tron, or Tron 2, or Tron 2.0, or Tr2n, or Tr$n, or whatever it is called.

Eitherway, SlashFilm has been a great source so far!
  • I find myself caring less about production shots and more when there are actually teasers/trailers unless it's of an established franchise, ie: IM2, Batman, Bourne, etc.
  • Or, you know, the Tron series.
  • 20 years in between movies doesn't really make a series
  • Booboo Larue
I'd say 20 years of cult classic status is more than enough time to get yourself established.
  • I guess we need another Blade Runner then... Ferris Bueller's Day Off... Repo Man...
  • Hat
There will never be "another Blade Runner." BR cannot be replicated. BR cannot be topped. It stands on its own. Don't get your hopes up.

I think it's great getting the inside scoop of on set production methods,
and Tron2 will definitely push visual effects way past Benjamin Button.
  • I soooo hope so. Reallly looking forward to a 4-disc Tron II blu-ray set. Here's hoping for tons of behind the scenes footage and cool tech.
  • vancouver for NYC? cmonnnnn. really disney?
  • If Disney was going to shoot entirely in NYC, the budget would easily hit the 300M mark. I hope they make Vancouver as real an NYC as possible.
  • The Fantastic Four films were both set in NYC and shot in Vancouver. Not to mention a plethora of other films and TV shows, Fringe is shooting season two in Vancouver.
  • i just tthought that disney wouldve gone all out
  • Corey
    so...not in canadian dollars, then...
  • Sean
The camera in the image above is definitely not an F35, it looks much more like a Grass Valley Viper, (camera Miranda used on Benjamin Button.)

Possibly a photo from Benjamin Button?

Unless they're running B, or C Cam with a smaller HD camera. Unlikely for Miranda I would think.
  • Hat
I thought it was a Varicam! But yeah, not a F35.
  • I could go and say "Who cares about another Tron"?

But what happens if the movie ends up being really really good? Then I would sound kinda ignorant.
  • Optimist
Given Hollywood.inc's track record of late, I could go and say anyone expecting a remake to be "really really good" already sounds 'kinda ignorant'. Americans are lazy thinkers and American film makers are talentless whores anymore, evidenced by the way they ransack the annal's of cinematic history looking for newer, better ways to tell old stories they can't even come up with anymore. I'm bored with the whole 2.0 modality. Versioning has become cultural now. 'Movie magic' is dead.
  • i just think that disney wouldve gone all out
