robin hood william hurt

William Hurt has joined the cast of Ridley Scott’s untitled Robin Hood film. Hurt will play the Earl of Pembroke, William Marshall, a man who served four kings: Henry II, Richard the Lionheart, John and Henry III. Marshall was a servant to the Plantagenet kings, who grew to become one of the most powerful men in Europe. Stephen Langton, Archbishop of Canterbury, called Marshall the “greatest knight that ever lived.” The film is set to be a retelling of the classic story, set in a more historically accurate setting than previous adaptations.

The main cast has already been announced: Russell Crowe as Robin Hood, Cate Blanchett as Lady Marion, Vanessa Redgrave as Queen Eleanor, Mark Strong as Sir Godfrey, Oscar Issac as King John, Léa Seydoux as French Princess Isabella, and the Merry Men: Scott Grimes as Will Scarlet, Kevin Durand as Little John, Alan Doyle as Allan Adayle.

I’m still not quite sure who is playing the Sheriff of Nottingham. The original plan calld for Crowe to play a dual role as both Robin Hood and the Sheriff, but Scott has said that is no longer the case. While the official plot synopsis mentions the Sheriff (see after the jump), Scott has said that it’s the “history of the time” and the “entire country” who will become the real villain in his film.

Official Plot Synopsis: Crowe stars as the legendary figure known by generations as Robin Hood, whose exploits have endured in popular mythology and ignited the imagination of those who share his spirit of adventure and righteousness. In 13th century England, Robin and his band of marauders confront corruption in a local village and lead an uprising against the crown that will forever alter the balance of world power. And whether thief or hero, one man from humble beginnings will become an eternal symbol of freedom for his people.

The untitled Robin Hood adventure chronicles the life of an expert archer, previously interested only in self-preservation, from his service in King Richard’s army against the French. Upon Richard’s death, Robin travels to Nottingham, a town suffering from the corruption of a despotic sheriff and crippling taxation, where he falls for the spirited widow Lady Marion (Blanchett), a woman skeptical of the identity and motivations of this crusader from the forest. Hoping to earn the hand of Maid Marion and salvage the village, Robin assembles a gang whose lethal mercenary skills are matched only by its appetite for life. Together, they begin preying on the indulgent upper class to correct injustices under the sheriff.

With their country weakened from decades of war, embattled from the ineffective rule of the new king and vulnerable to insurgencies from within and threats from afar, Robin and his men heed a call to ever greater adventure. This unlikeliest of heroes and his allies set off to protect their country from slipping into bloody civil war and return glory to England once more.

With Ridley Scott at the helm, combined with Russell Crowe leading a superb cast, the new Robin Hood film is yet to give a much needed boost to the historical film genre. Earlier Robin Hood films, with the exception of the 1939
classic, have all proved to be artistic failures. I think this new Robin Hood will have it all and I look forward to the film's first showing in 2010.

What the hell is wrong with this film. When the plot synopsis was orginally released, it sounded awesome, with Crowe as a good Sherrif of Nottingham and someone (Bale!, Bale!, Bale!) as the baddie Robin Hood. Sounded awesome. Now it sounds like another reboot and it sounds pretty average. Shame on everyone involved.
  • i've always thought that Robin Hood, along with King Arthur, were the original superheroes. that's why I'm always fascinated by them.

I hope Scott is aiming for a rated R version, especially if he's planing on placing his characters in a "historically accurate setting". This would almost surely necessitate peppering the film with grim representations of medieval life, specifically warfare. The last thing I want to see is another kid-friendly PG/PG-13 rehash. I swear to God, if Scott has Russell Crowe swing across the set on a rope to rescue Marion, embracing her with a wink and a smile, I'll blow my friggin' brains out.
  • I can't decide whether I care about this movie or not. I mean, I keep hearing all these people dropping out, being cast...IDK. But it is William Hurst and I like him, so.

I'd like to love Gary Oldman as the Sheriff of Nottingham.

Oldman can certainly play very intense villains, though I heard many years ago that he was done with those roles and I recall that he was suffering from substance abuse issues during the years he often played bad guys. While I'd like to see Oldman play the villainous Sheriff, I fully support his choice to steer clear of that role if it would jeopardize his sobriety.
  • He's ok, he's just so monotone.
  • I never liked the idea of Crowe playing both Robin Hood and the Sheriff of Nottingham. I also liked the title of Nottingham better. I'm glad to see that Crowe won't be doing both. Now change that boring, generic title!
  • This is shaping up rather nicely. It seems that historical films based on popular icons with big casts are the rage now.. first Sherlock Holmes, now this.
  • i like the idea that Hollywood hasn't long its roots in some way. For every CGI robot action movie, I wouldn't mind having an old fashion medieval adventure.
  • William Hurt, four-time Oscar nominee (and one time winner) . we will see him in Damages season 2 .
  • LOVE William Hurt. I could listen to him talk all day. Can't say I'm a fan of Hurt.
  • I just saw Dark City today. LOVE William Hurt. I could listen to him talk all day. I could watch a movie of him reading names out of a phonebook for 2 hours.
  • Hmm, not sure about this. Can't say I'm a fan of Hurt.
