Crank 2 Web Advertisements Powered by Twitter?

Lionsgate Pictures made news by being the first movie studio to premiere new content (a Crank 2 poster) on Twitter. And now it appears that the studio is basing part of their internet advertising campaign around the micro-blogging site. While browsing the web, I cam across the above Crank 2 google ad for Crank: High Voltage, which features a rotating feed from the official Lionsgate movies twitter account.

I’m not sure how promoting the Lionsgate twitter account will get more people to buy tickets to the sequel (especially when some of the messages are just the Lionsgate Twitter publicist talking to random twitter users about who-knows-what), but I thought it was an interesting idea. I think it would be cooler to have the advertisement grab random mentions of Crank 2 in real time from around the Twitterverse.

  • what's up with this whole twitter thing? it seems that everybody just can't live without that lol
  • This is only the tip of the iceberg. I was just looking at an app tonight that lets you create discounted coupons for distribution to your followers.
  • Yeah I think this was a pretty good move on their part. Not sure how much its going to help but it cant hurt. Im pretty excited for the movie, it was made to not be taken seriously and just to go out and have some fun :)
  • Props to Twitter!

But seriously. No matter if Twitter might be yesterday's news tomorrow. Right now it's really popular and this type of ad campaing is a good move for Twitter and sure to garner some attention for Crank 2 simply because it is unique.

This post and these comments are a case in point.

Just an FYI - Lionsgate will need to do a lot more tthan have Chev Twittering o get me to see this movie or to make me change my mind about the first.

Peter loves the Twitter! but that's ok because I do as well!
  • the best way of promotion right now
  • Twitter is REALLY popular, isn't it?
  • Peter loves him some twitter. Twitter this, twitter that. I still think this is a fad that'll pass.
  • Yeah, it would be great if it pulled random quotes... I would make sure to abuse it every chance I got.

    F**k twitter.

I have no idea what that ad even says...

That last idea, of the advertisment grabbing random mentions of Crank 2 from around Twitter, sounds amazing. At least, up until the point someone tweets "Saw Crank 2. It sucked. Don't go see it!"
  • Hahaha. I think that would actually be a breath of fresh air in advertising. Instead of seeing those vague and worthless quotes like, "THRILLING!", "ADRENALINE RUSH!", "PULSE-POUNDING!", and "GRABS YOU AND NEVER LETS GO!", usually all taken from the same obscure review, we'd get some genuinely hilarious feedback. I'd love to see a Lionsgate ad for Crank 2 that read: "Plotless, meandering, and utterly devoid of substance. An hour long murderous rampage. Everything we've come to expect from Jason Statham! Gloriously awful!". I mean, that's really the review I'm looking for anyway. I'd rather you not try and convince me that Crank 2 is a quality movie; I just want you to tell me he's going to hurt people in really creative and excruciating ways.
