umbrella academy

Universal Pictures has hired Race to Witch Mountain scribe Mark Bomback to adapt Dark Horse Comics’ The Umbrella Academy for the big screen. The film is very tentatively aiming for a 2012 release. I wasn’t a big fan of Witch Mountain, but it appears that Bomback might have better source material this time around.

The six-issue limited series was created by Gerard Way, the lead singer of band My Chemical Romance, but don’t let that scare you away. The comic won the 2008 Eisner Award (the comic book equivalent of the Academy Awards) for Best Finite Series. Of course, a second series The Umbrella Academy: Dallas was launched in 2008. The comic tells the story of a disbanded group of superheroes who reunite after the death of their adoptive father. Read the official comic synopsis after the jump.

“In an inexplicable, worldwide event, forty-seven extraordinary children were spontaneously born by women who’d previously shown no signs of pregnancy. Millionaire inventor Reginald Hargreeves adopted seven of the children; when asked why, his only explanation was, “To save the world.” These seven children form The Umbrella Academy, a dysfunctional family of superheroes with bizarre powers. Their first adventure at the age of ten pits them against an erratic and deadly Eiffel Tower, piloted by the fearsome zombie-robot Gustave Eiffel. Nearly a decade later, the team disbands, but when Hargreeves unexpectedly dies, these disgruntled siblings reunite just in time to save the world once again”

Grant Morrison called the series “An ultraviolet psychedelic sherbet bomb of wit and ideas.” The first volume has been collected in a 192-page paperback, which is available on Amazon for around $12 (I know this because I just placed an order myself).

  • Though people may not like My Chemical Romance or their music or Gerard Way's onstage persona... check out his guest-hosting spot on G4's Fresh Ink:

Dude knows his comics. And Umbrella Academy reflects this.

" The comic tells the story of a disbanded group of superheroes who reunite after the death of their adoptive father."

Replace "adoptive father" with The Comedian and it sounds a lot like watchmen to me.
  • You're a complete idiot.
  • dafe
I suggest you read the comic "Watchmen" by Alan Moore for further information, Dug.
  • Umbrella Academy is definitely ripe for a quirky ensemble cast. I LOVED volume 1 and it's heavy handed approach to comedy and tragedy in tights will hopefully turn out the same on screen!
  • icko
yeah....enjoyed the 1st arc.......trying to catch up with the dallas arc
  • matt
Eh, I don't know, it's a very comic book-y series, I'm not sure I'd want them to try and put it into live action.

don't know why anyone would be scared off by Way, the band is solid as fuck & 'the black parade' was in the top 3 best albums of that year. the comic is very different and full of fresh ideas.

a live adaptation will require the trickiest mix of cg/costume/make-up...but i'm in. hopefully MCR will score the film, maybe even just Way himself.
  • Brad
I'll tell you why people are scared off by MCR. It's the douchebag fans and the trappings of the scene that does it. It seems very lame from the outside, so most people don't even give the music a chance.

Don't get me wrong - I loved The Black Parade. It is a great album. But all the floppy hair, make up, and whiny kids are almost enough to keep anyone away..
  • !!!
Hey, don't generalize and knock all the fans. My Chemical Romance is doing something different; they're uniting people- they're giving meaning to peoples' lives and inspiration to some who had none before they found solace in the band's music. They're actually SAYING something. It's a beautiful thing no matter how floppy one's hair may be.
  • jason b you are very much correct. i dont understand why people gave zack synder slck for using my chemical romance as the end song in watchmen. they are a very visually stunning band with amazing lyrics and they were perfect. not to mention gerard way created a awesome comic and is a huge fan of watchmen.
  • I read that graphic novel, it was pretty good. Not surprised it's gonna be made into a film. Let's hope it'll be fantastic.
  • Umbrella Academy is a very cool comic, hopefully the movie will be good as well.
  • Oh, come on. It sounds like "X-Men" with the dark overtones of "Watchmen." People are capitalizing on "Watchmen" achievements.: x

Seriously, if you haven't, read it. It has great writing and some fantastic art. If only Gerard Way would quit making shit music and go into comic writing full time. Kid got potential.

if anything, this comic is more hellboyish in tone with things that are weird for the sake of being odd... however none of the oddity takes away from the story or character development...when in the world of UA you are either along for the ride or standing confused at the starting line.
  • Looks/sounds awesome, I'm def picking this up...
  • It's nothing like Watchmen or X-men.
  • I hope it's as awesome as the Book.
  • bnitro
Great news. The book is a little Watchmen and a little X-men.
  • I'm going to have to pick this up. The story sounds like something I'd enjoy.
  • Brad
I love it when people pretend to be comic-book elitists by ignorantly claiming that something they've never read rips off the only mainstream and hugely popular crap they know anything about, thus proving that they don't actually know shit about shit unless there has already been a movie made out of it. Way to go tardbags.
  • Maaaan you get props if you can pull off Umbrella Academy as a movie.
    That book is nutty.
  • Mcgisadickhead
n will they learn? Watchmen was a turkey, this one will be a goose...
  • Whoa, whoa...
I suggest you read UA before you take one badly worded sentence as evidence that it is some sort of "rip-off."
  • The thing is this, whether you've read TUA or not, whether you LIKED it or not....whether you LIKE the band the author is in or NOT. Here's one simple fact that remains.

A couple years ago the comic industry was struggling, starving, dying...why? because 14 yr olds were picking up manga and not american comics. But you know what else 14 yr olds were picking up? MCR cd's and you know what they are picking up now??? Not just TUA but watchmen, xmen, the preacher, the punisher, promethea, buffy the vampire slayer, etc etc...

Say what you want about Gerard but one thing he is good at is using his talents to reach others. So the next time you decide to bash what millions of people love, perhaps you should consider what someone has contributed to the scene that you LOVE even if you feel their scene is too much unlike your own for you to like them.

I like my floppy hair and my MCR cd's and my TUA comics...and thanks to Gerard, my money is lining the industry that is now thriving. Am I saying that it's all Gerard? NO. But you know he helped.

And I fully agree with what Brad said, You have a right to an opinon but base it on facts don't base it on "i don't like how he looks, i don't like his fans, clearly I could not like his comics" and certainly don't base it on a one sentence summary. How about basing it on the fact that just this year alone TUA is up for 4 Eisner awards.

One thing I've learned about this world is ignorance is bliss...sometimes I wish I was ignorant so I didn't have to put up with so many others bliss.

    Sincerely,
    Becks
Owner of floppy hair, every single issue of TUA ever printed and a MCR fansite that donates to charity www.MCRime.net (if you're interested in finding out how to win an Umbrella Academy Umbrella signed by Gerard Way compliments of TFAW signing April 4th). So hate me if you must. But I'm going to be the first one at the theater on opening day and the 2nd one in the comic shop...right behind you so I can laugh as you buy the TPB admitting you were wrong.
  • I'm not too sure how they are going to pull off Spaceboy without a bunch of crappy special effects, but I still can't wait to see it. I loved the series and I would recommend it to anyone that hasn't read any of the comics yet. Its like the person a few post above me said, man knows his comics.
