butch and sundance
I’m never sure if I should report any of the showbiz rumors that come out the UK-based newspapers. So much of it is bullshit gossip that never comes to pass. Tonight /Film reader Emmett D sent over a link to an article on The Daily Express website that claims that Tom Cruise hopes to produce a remake of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid for United Artists, and is already interviewing potential screenwriters for the project.

According to the unnamed sources (because, if the sources were named, it could no longer be a rumor…), Cruise would play Sundance, the role made famous by Robert Redford in the original 1969 western. John Travolta would play Cassidy, a role originally played by Paul Newman. The article also claims that Cruise has been wanting to make this film for years now, and even got Paul Newman’s blessing before he passed.

I’m actually one of the few people who still enjoys watching Cruise on the big screen, but I can’t even imagine Travolta in a Sundance Kid remake. I’m willing to give almost anything the benefit of the doubt, but even I can’t imagine any good coming out of this. But for now, just mark this as another UK newspaper rumor which will probably turn out to be completely bunk.

  • I'm pretty confident this is just UK tabloid rubbish. If there is any thread of truth to it - the casting, especially (Cruise and Travolta? REALLY?) then this would be horribly horrendous! Perhaps it is time to remake this film (PERHAPS, I said) but not with an aging or spent cast like that. Never ever.
  • I hope you are right. This remake would be so horrible!
  • In the new version I hear instead of robbing banks they hijack Douglas DC-8 airliners and fly to the Galactic Confederacy and battle Xenu until they are both trapped in this little hut outside a volcano. It's based a true story. Honest.
  • Couldn't he at least have waited until Robert Redford died. WOW!!!
  • The problem with this is that Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is essentially just a buddy movie set in the west. The things that make it special are the chemistry between Newman and Redford, the freshness of the concept and the revisionist western aspect, all of which are exclusive to THAT film. Butch and Sundance don't lend themselves to being remade. Throw together a script and put some cowboy hats on Cruise and Travolta and you have something much more akin to the spirit of Butch and Sundance than a remake could ever be.

Remaking some films makes sense. In fact, I'm all for it.

Demme said "I don't think it's sacrilegious to remake any movie, including a good or even great movie. I think what's sacrilegious is to make a bad movie, whether it's a remake or an original." and I believe every word of that. Cruise is digging himself a grave with this project because there's no way it can work. It's not feasible. All you're doing is holding yourself up to the original, and even if it's a good or great film in its own right, you're drawing unnecessary comparisons.

No one would fault him for making a buddy movie western in the spirit of Butch and Sundance, but remaking the film is setting up a game you can't win.

stupidity. If anyone should play Robert Redford's part it should be Brad Pitt
  • McConaughey can be Butch.

I see that they are advertising for the new BR-DVD for the remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still. Within the advertisement they say it "includes the classic , original film." There is something so obviously wrong with that, and I'm not even sure how it can be articulated.

It surely applies here. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid still holds up for modern audiences --script, dialogue, performance, everything. Why would they remake it and why would they need to rewrite it? It's solid. CGI horses?

I'm calling BS on this story. Maybe if they want to do Butch and Sundance in space, they might have something new to say.

I'd say Tom Cruise should take on the Cassidy role and let Zac Efron shine as the Sundance kid. And Edward Norton should play a villain. With a mustache.
  • This is probably bs. If it's true then Pitt should be playing the Sundance Kid.

If it's posted in any of these UK tabloids, it'll be rubbish:

    The Sun
    Daily Star
    Daily Express
    Daily Mail
    Daily Sport

Ignore all of those. Stick to the broadsheets:

    The Times
    The Guardian
    The Independent
    etc
  • Please God No!!!!
  • I've always thought that Pitt looks a bit like Redford...
  • GANOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
  • Jamieson
    I always saw a Pitt/Clooney movie.
    Or maybe a Damon/McConaughey film.
  • D: !
    NNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First, this would be blasphemy. Secondly, if they do it, I hope they leave out the "Raindrops keep falling on my head" crap. Other than that song, the movie is flawless.
  • dude shut up that song is what made that movie. you can't take that song away from that movie

A big question in all this is: Should Merrill Lynch and Bank of America be engaged in Hollywood movie making after receiving taxpayer money in the form of the TARP?

If Merrill Lynch's contract with MGM/UA/Tom Cruise cannot be broken--like the AIG bonuses--then shouldn't movie executive compensation be set to no more than $250,000 per year? And, if such movie executives make more than that, they should be taxed at the 90% tax rate that the House of Representatives passed concerning people getting the AIG bonuses.

This movie financing with taxpayer money should be a matter of taxpayer and congressional outrage! It is putting government money at too much risk; especially after the "Valkyrie" and "Lions to Lambs" failures.

Let your congressman and senators know how you feel.

Ya know who looks like Paul Newman?

Patrick Wilson. Plus, he's pretty consistently good. Brad Pitt looks like Redford and could probably pull off the role, and I think the two would work great if they remade it.

The real questions is will their be a love making scene between the two fairy stars?
  • Isaac
Weird, i just saw this movie last night.
  • No. I hope this never happens.

I would love to see both Travolta and Cruise in a Western, but why mess with one of the greatest films ever made?? Leave it be, and come up with something new people!!

But I gotta say that this rumor is better than the one a few years back of Matt Damon and Ben Affleck taking over the roles.
  • This must not happen. Any goodwill from me that Cruise has accumulated from UA will go out the window. I was on the fruitcake's side, man. This is bad bad news.
  • Didn't they already remake this with Jake, and Heath?
  • yep
has to be pitt/clooney if it's remade
  • Justin Craig
This is the stupidest idea I've ever heard. Why would they remake a cinematic masterpiece that's fine the way it is??? Oh, right. It's because they're a bunch of money-minded assholes who don't give two shits about the art of filmmaking; AND there are enough jackasses who would contribute to the scientology infested disgrace of a classic film; AND Hollywood producers are giant pussies who won't invest in original ideas.
  • Pitt should play Sundance and I'm not sure about Butch, but Clooney and Pitt do have some nice chemistry together.

Damon and Affleck were supposed to do a re-make, as reported in 2006. Anything's possible BUT to do it justice, Hollywood needs to get the history right - that means more in-depth research, in turn expanding the length of the film. Example: Costner did a good job of Wyatt Earp but Tombstone was the more popular film. Says it all, so maybe Goldman's film should remain the definitive version.
