Gavin Hood Disputes Wolverine Rumors

X-Men Origins: Wolverine director Gavin Hood is finally speaking publicly about the highly circulated rumors that the film production suffered from constant interference from Fox Chairman Tom Rothman. While Hood admits that he “didn’t always agree” with Rothman, he claims that he “never had a stand-up fight” with Rothman.

“I am very fond of Tom. We didn’t always agree. We certainly never yelled at each other. Some of these fan sites have really been upsetting in that way.I have never had a stand-up fight with Tom Rothman. Never, ever in all his time with me — never. And that is a fact. It’s quite upsetting to see how these things spiral,” Hood told THR . “When he and I are in a room together debating, he’s a very forceful personality — Tom Rothman — and I’m a fairly forceful personality. Did we discuss and debate what stylistically I was going to bring to the movie, and his expectations and mine? Of course. Of course you do that. And I hope it makes the movie better.”

I can’t dispute Hood’s claims, but I find it hard to believe, especially considering that the rumors came from varried sources in different outlets. And we’ve seen these kind of power struggles between directors and studios in the past, and it always usually ends with both sides downplaying the reports to the media as the film is getting ready to hit theaters. But the bottom line is that Hood returned to helm the reshoots without studio interference.

Hope this movie burns, Rothman should change his name schumacher
  • Gambit could have been a better supporting character with a better accent. Other than that as expected. But Ryan Reynolds did great as Deadpool then someone made him a steaming pile of shit with abilities..
  • It's a fact. Fox. ruins. movies.
  • I blame the Fox Film studio entirely for this movie's problems...even if they didn't have specific problems with each other...I bet Fox gutted this film into some bullshit popcorn action flick...like always.

oh, and as for this whole 'wolverine coming into the welcoming arms of an elderly couple scene' i keep hearing about...is this fucking nickleodeon's wolverine cartoon?! goddammit these guys have pissed on a brilliant character.

I don't think it's fair at all to assess the final product on the viewing of a workprint that you were very lucky to see. It's dated form over a month ago, doesn't include all of the effects, and isn't even close to the final edit. It's loose, as something that far from release should be. A film can come a long way in two months through tweaking and actually being finished.

I was really glad to see the copy that I did, as I am dying to compare the workprint and the final product, but I don't expect that the two are really going to be the same in most ways.

Won't watch until it hits theaters, but it sure sounds like they ruined Deadpool big time. But should anyone really bemoan them ruining Gambit? To quote Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, "That would be like pooping on poop."
  • No, they're true. It's insanely horrible. Walk out after a half hour horrible.
  • He never had a stand-up fight? Maybe he should have! I knew this movie was going to suck from the first moment it was announced. I even put aside my extreme hatred for Huge Jackman to watch it and it's even worse than I had imagined it to be. Deadpool should have been built to an extreme level and wasn't at all, the final fight was pathetic and they completely ruined an amazing character (deadpool) for any future movies. Though after this pathetic excuse for a film, I can't imagine there would be any need, or want, for a sequel.
  • I'd say the workprint is pretty cheesy/bad. It's pretty bad yet watchable by a general moviegoer viewpoint and most likely terrible for fanboys.
  • Without the FX I felt the story was there at first then it just dove off into some utter non-sense and I don't think the extra 14 minutes can fix the whole story line unless they fixed Deadpool and some of the acting and background story.

But as I said its a matter of opinion, and a lot of peoples opinion are this movie isn't THAT bad yet its not that great either :)
  • *SPOILER ALERT*

    DEAD POOL DIES!
  • B33
It's true. Pictures were shown months ago that revealed the alterations made. Fans of Deadpool should prepare themselves for the inevitable...
  • McLovin
Poor Deadpool? Poor Charlie.... SOrry he will forever be Charlie in my heart, its better than Merry...

The deadpool thing was more like WTF than anger... like wait what do you mean... And then the end sequence.... it sets soo much up for question because it doesn't flow into X1 like it should have....
  • cause they want to make a Wolverine 2.
  • Raio
the begining and the middle are ok....but the end is an abortion. Rothman did it again. I won´t watch it on theater, no special effects or new editing can save a bad script.
  • The only good part was the opening credit sequence... past that its epic fail
  • I couldn't care less about rumors surrounding it, this movie fucking sucks. It's clear that nobody making big decisions cared about the material or the talent, which is a shame, because if they had used Ryan Reynolds' full potential it might have saved this trainwreck.

It works best to imagine the film industry as the mafia. You can't talk out of turn or, god forbid, talk back and you can only hope to stay in the game as long as it will let you.
  • I think he is smart enough to keep his mouth shut, and act like nothing is wrong.
  • If he wants to be a working director from now on, he needs to put the fault on the studio as much as humanly possible.
  • Whatever the reason, the movie was still pretty terrible. They raped some of the characters and the excuse for Deadpool at the end will never make me look back at him again the same way.

I'm a little confused. Are the reshoots included in the workprint or will the theatrical release be a bit different?
  • The workprint does not include the reshoots, and probably includes stuff since cut.

The theatrical version will be different.
  • The workprint was such a cool experience for a film fan. It was really neat to see all of the unfinished effects and the stunt doubles with the wires on them etc.

    Advice to Gavin:

ADMIT to the studio interfering at all costs. Say the studio directed the movie while you were tied up in the back of a ice cream truck!

This movie had legitimate performances with a few exceptions. The fact is that the characters were rushed so quickly that you didn't care what happened to them. THE ONLY CHARACTER YOU LEGITIMATELY CARE ABOUT IS WADE WILSON- and yeah, they basically take the merc with the mouth and... well won't get into spoilers but I hope these extensive reshoots include a new ending. This movie was shit- If I'm FOX I come out tomorrow morning and say that the film is all GAVINS- not that anyone would believe it.
  • ....i still can't believe that they did that... ... i have trouble sleeping at night because of it... poor Deadpool... poor, poor, Deadpool.
  • Someone should have asked Gavin what he thought about his movie being leaked a month early. I was hoping we would hear something from him about the work print but I guess that's news for another day.
  • Fox does nothing but fuck shit up. They are the mother fuckers who turned the fourth Die Hard movie into a fucking PG-13 short bus adventure. Gimme a break, these guys are fucking worthless, and as for Hood, sorry bro but even if they did interfere, your movie is gonna blow donkey cock from what all the movie sites are saying.

Would've made more sense to dispute the rumors right after they came out.
  • Turbo Graphix 16
So we have a movie made by a terrible studio, mediocre directors writers and actors. The end result is a mediocre movie........ no surprise.
Better off blaming it on Fox everybody else has .
  • I reckon they did have verbal confrontations but of course they would deny it with the film release coming soon.
  • we shall see. i haven't watched it yet but i hope rumors aren't true. but doesn't sound good for the film.
  • dagreenman18
As someone who's seen the film, i say his statement was a bad idea, because if the above is true and the studio did not interfere, then he is an awful director and should be ashamed of this film. Unless the missing 14 minutes is the best in the history of film, this movie is an awful train wreck.
  • Brad
Dude, I've seen the work print too and it was much better than I was expecting. It's not great, but it is far from the disataster you make it out to be.
  • Everyone has their own opinions. Personally I think they fucked up Deadpool, Gambit and the whole God damn movie is a fucking mess.

They could have done wayyyyyyy better with this film.
  • jason B
dude, i think you just made the most poignant statement i've read about this film. hood should've stood his ground, because if it's on par with X3, then he's just another ratner. i'm dreading the inevitable, and i know that it's about to be a 2 hour abortion.
  • Damage control much.
  • jason B
if what i've heard they've done with Deadpool is true, they can both go fuck off.
  • psbp
    The movie butchers...everything.
  • thefan
    I'll drink to that.
  • sounds like a desterate film studio trying to make up for their huge mistakes in the past few months.
saw the flick. not as bad as I thought it would be.
will go and see the finished product.
    it will be quite different
    for better or worse..
