The public expectation has been that Christopher Nolan’s sequel to The Dark Knight to hit theaters in the Summer of 2011, but Michael Cain, who plays Alfred in the series, thinks it might take a little longer.

“All I know is that Christopher Nolan, who writes and directs Batman is doing a picture called Inception, and I’m not in it. So I think another Batman film is a long long way off. Long Way. I would say three years, must be.”

The timetable is very short, and if Warner Bros were to announce a Summer 2011 release date for Batman 3, Nolan would be forced to begin principal photography before Inception is even finished post production. I’ve always said it, and I’ll say it again, Summer 2012 is much more likely. Ad besides, we don’t really want Nolan and crew to rush another film, do we?

I for one wouldn't mind waiting awhile for a third film. That way it hopefully won't succumb to the threequel crap fest that films usually go through...except in those rare instances like LoTR and Indiana Jones,

  • Sounds about right. I don't mind the wait at all and I'm very happy that WB is supporting Nolan like this. More studios need to back directors this way and not push them into producing a movie every other year for franchises like this.

I'm just glad they're handling it the exact opposite way certain other studios handle their "franchises". Typically we'd have gotten the sequel announcement before TDK even hit theatres.
  • Michael Caine sure does talk a lot about the next Batman film.
  • Probably because everyone asks him about it in some form or fashion.
  • I remember when I was following TDK I'd constantly see postings of Sir Caine releasing a good amount of information.

I think he sincerely enjoys these films and working with Nolan and the rest of the cast & crew.
  • He seems to like making movies period. He is always talking up crews and casts for stuff he has done. I personally have never even seen a Caine quote that is even wishy washy.
  • If it means waiting for 3 years for an ace story with a well developed plot, then I'm happy to wait. I don't want the sequel to be rushed out with a sloppy story.
  • yeah. I agree with you.
  • I wish we could get one before 2012 but I guess I can wait. The wait wasn't that long for Dark Knight and 2012 will be here in no time. They need to get the next film right and not rush into things or else we could see the trend continue with trilogies.

I think he is lying about not being in Inception.

Someone on a Nolan fan site posted a comment saying Marion Cotillard. Cillian Murphy AND Micheal Caine were going to be in the movie. This was before Variety/The Hollywood Reporter had posted their articles. Later that day 2 out of 3 names were correct.
  • Batman 3? I can wait just like everyone else, but the way "Inception" is shaping up, I bet it will be amazing.
  • Inception is going to awesome. With Leo, Marion Cotillard, Cillian Murphy and Ellen Page, this is shaping up to an excellent cast!
  • I'm all for studios taking their time making films.

I absolutely despise rushed productions when it comes to big franchises. It usually leads to messy results. I'm glad WB is taking their time and giving Nolan some breathing space (I'm sure he's going to be a bit exhausted after Inception and some RNR would do the man good to refresh himself which will hopefully allow for some great 3rd film ideas).
  • take as long as you need.

i'll say this again: in nolan we trust. 2012 is fine.
  • "We don't want Nolan and crew to rush another film do we?" What other film did he rush? Cuz they all turned out pretty meticulous to me.
  • Nolan's never worked on a franchise like Batman before. And that's what that comment pertains to. We all know how most comic films with sequels work. They want to pump them out as fast as possible.

Nolan will most likely be pretty exhausted after Inception and will need some RNR to refresh his mind and hopefully come up with some great 3rd film ideas.

I love Caine, but he needs to stop talking about The Dark Knight sequel when we all know he doesn't know anything for sure. He needs to just keep making good movies and stop speculating about this one.

I think it's not important at all (for the studio and the fans) that the third Batman came out so soon after The Dark Knight. Seriously, the people will not forget after 3 or 5 years that TDK was incredible. We will be excited to see the sequel anytime, no matter own long the waiting will be.

    yes hopefully 2012 :)
  • I talked to the actor that looked like Johnny Depp who played crazy guy and he said the exact same thing except we wouldnt see it until 2014.
  • Don't wait to long. I don't want to see a different actor playing Alfred and Michael Caine isn't getting any younger.
  • I think Gary Oldman could pull it off

That's OK...I can wait (anxiously)...and I know it will be worth every minute.

I'll happily wait. It's the third one, and I want quality over quantity. Odds are it's the last one for many of them and I want it to be fantastic.
  • It might seem like forever but I think it will be worth it. Or at least I hope it will be.
  • wow, I don't know if I can wait that long for a dark knight sequel but I guess I have no choice.
  • To make up for release being pushed back, can we get a copy of the script, Nolan, please? =D
  • Does DC Comics have anything else planned before 2012 other than Green Lantern?
  • Looks like it might become a trend, I mean you definitely have similar directors like Peter Jackson and Zack Snyder that kinda do the same thing. But, yeah I agree completely.
  • The wait builds up the anticipation and makes it all the more better. Plus we'll have another Nolan film to keep us busy until then.

After Spiderman 3 I learned a lesson about just being patient for the third film. God that was a terrible movie. Then again, as an American, I've been conditioned to want more and to want it fast. Ugh. I just hope they shoot it before Michael Caine dies.

Why is everyone shoving Michael Caine into the grave all of a sudden? He is a healthy, talented, hardworking (sexy as hell) actor. He isn't going anywhere.
